hat does Australia Day mean to you? Beer and prawns on the beach while listening to the Hottest 100, a day for quiet reflection on what it means to be a citizen of the great southern land, the day you hastily contact the exercise books before the kids head back to school, or merely a commemoration of the date some Pommie bloke landed with a bunch of weary convicts a couple of hundred years ago? For many it is a polarising day, for others it’s just another public holiday, for hundreds of new Australians it’s the day they become proud citizens. However you celebrate, commemorate or observe Australia Day, I hope it’s a good one. And to help get you in the spirit, this week Dorothy Drane is making like Tony Barber with her Australia Day quiz. That’s over the page as part of this week’s cover story. Now we’re not

] scoring you on how well you do, in fact if you answer most of the question right, well you’re just taking it too seriously – most un-Australian. If your preferred Aussie Day tipple is of the non-alcoholic fizzy kind, I encourage you to head over to our agenda item on page 20. The nation’s health advocates have had enough of the sugary drinks that are contributing to obesity. And sports drinks and fruit juices are also in the firing line. Australia Day also means it’s back to school time, and this week in palate we have some healthy recipes to fill up the lunchbox. Todd Widdicombe is doing his bit for the nation, this week reviewing the Fat Yak, and we have some other foodie news and reviews. That’s on page 26. For some Aus Day activities flick over to weekend (page 28). Or just head down to your local beach with an Esky, some zinc and an inflatable thong. Have a great long weekend!

t’s hot. Very hot. And very muggy even though it’s still early morning – an immediate reminder that this is Australia and this is Australia Day. It’s appropriate that a nation so defined by its weather should celebrate its national day at the height of summer. Whether planning a day on the beach, a game of cricket in the backyard or in the street; a barbie and a beer or to just loll in the pool with a glass of bubbly, it’s time to celebrate who we are and how far we’ve come since the First Fleet sailed into Sydney Cove and Governor Phillip rowed ashore to claim the land known as New Holland for Britain in 1788. Not long ago, it was just another public holiday to extend the weekend before school holidays finished. The swing started with the bicentennial celebrations of 1988. It became very cool to declare allegiance to the sunburnt country and then, in 1994, all states and territories decided it was time to have the public holiday on January 26, rather than the nearest Monday for a long weekend. This meant we had no choice but to recognise Australia Day for what it is – a celebration of everything Australian and a time for national pride. Fair dinkum. The first official celebration was in 1818, on the 30th anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet. Foundation Day was declared a holiday for all government workers and they were given a bonus of an extra pound of fresh meat. Think of that as you throw a steak on the barbecue. As it was to be another four decades before the colony of Queensland was founded (and almost 10 years after that before the first explorers began sniffing around the Sunshine Coast), the celebration of the nation belonged to NSW. It even became quite snobby in Sydney, where the United Australians celebration dinner was restricted to those born in Australia, just as these days it’s a matter of pride to be the descendent of a convict. The next big event was the 50th anniversary of the colony’s foundation and Australia’s first public holiday was declared for Anniversary Day.

It was almost another 50 years before all states were calling January 26 Australia Day, although Sydney preferred its old Anniversary Day name. That changed after World War II when, in 1946, everyone in the nation agreed to celebrate Australia Day on January 26, even if the public holiday was taken on the nearest Monday to the date. For many years it remained just another public holiday and there was nothing too special to worry about except trying to remember what the holiday was for, but anyone born around or soon after the huge national celebrations of 1988 has grown up with January 26 being their national day. It has been embraced by the younger generations who have happily adopted it as an excuse for a day of partying Australian-style. The day typically starts with community gatherings – breakfasts, morning teas and lunches, and then settles into a long, hot afternoon of getting together with family and friends. For many, it is also a celebration of officially becoming an Australian, with citizenship services held in even small communities and towns. All sorts of community organisations plan street parades, festivals, sporting events and concerts while on the official side, the Australian of the Year and the list of Australia Day honours is announced. Little wonder Australia Day has become the biggest annual civic event in the country. And there’s a lot to celebrate – our freedom, multiculturalism and distinctive national identity; our achievements in science, the arts and sport; amazing Australians who have wowed the world stage in any number of fields; our spirit of mateship and the volunteers in so many organisations who work to make their community a better place. It makes you proud to say “I’m Australian”. How much do you know about your country? Take our quiz and test your knowledge of Australian trivia. M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

MWP’s Aussie Day quiz fuel vaporises and motorists have to wait for the air to cool down to fuel up.

Gather around the barbie with your friends and test your knowledge of the nation, and discover some of our weird and wonderful quirks along the way. 1. Name the two animals on the Australian Coat of Arms. ANSWER: The kangaroo and the emu. Australia is one of the few countries known to eat its national emblems. 2. According to its theme song, what does Vegemite do to Australian faces? ANSWER: It puts a rose in every cheek. Vegemite first came on the market in 1923, but was losing sales to Marmite. It was briefly renamed Parwill with the slogan ‘Ma Mite but Pa Will’ (if mother ‘might’ then father ‘will’). By 1935 it was back to Vegemite and by the late 1940s was used in nine out of 10 Australian homes.

5. What was the signif cant event of St Valentine’s Day, 1966? ANSWER: Decimal currency became official. Cartoon character Dollar Bill was singing for months before, to the tune of Click Go the Shears – “In come the dollars and in come the cents, out go the pounds and the shillings and the pence.” Six pennies was equal to five cents; two shillings was equal to 20 cents and 10 shillings made up one dollar. 6. What was Sadie’s occupation? ANSWER: Sadie the Cleaning Lady was the first solo single for 18-year-old Johnny (not John) Farnham in November 1967. It shot to number one on the charts for six weeks and was the biggest selling single by an Australian artist in Australia in the 1960s.

3. What invention for the international aviation industry came out of Australia? ANSWER: The Black Box records flight data and provides valuable information on the causes of air crashes. Dr David Warren of the Aeronautical Research Laboratories in Melbourne produced the first prototype for a crash-survivable method to record the flight crew’s conversation in 1956. The Black Box is actually orange.

7. What famous Australian beach was f rst called Elston? ANSWER: Surfers Paradise officially became the new name in 1933. The Southport Postmaster had named the receiving office near the surf beach after his wife’s home in England in 1889, but after Jim Cavill opened a hotel in 1925, he began lobbying for a more glamorous name.

4. What is Oodnadatta famous for? ANSWER: It has the highest accurately recorded temperature. Near the Simpson Desert south of the Northern Territory border in South Australia, it recorded 50.7 degrees on January 2, 1960. The town has a sign boasting “the driest town in the driest state of the driest continent”. It was thought it might hit the record again this year when petrol stopped pumping. Once it reaches 45 degrees the

8. An abundance of what specif c plant led to the naming of Palmwoods? ANSWER: The piccabeen palm was found in many groves in the town first called Merriman’s Flat in 1881 by settlers the Kuskopf family. It was renamed when the North Coast railway opened the station. The nearby scrub had plentiful piccabeen palms that were easily split and used for guttering.

11. What’s the opening line of the second verse of the Australian national anthem? ANSWER: “Beneath our radiant southern cross”. Advance Australia Fair has only two verses and was chosen to replace God Save the Queen by a referendum in 1977. There was a choice of only three – Waltzing Matilda came second and God Save the Queen was third. 12. Why is the Maroochy Surf Club’s logo a black swan? ANSWER: The name Maroochydore comes from the Aboriginal Yuggera language word ‘Murukutchi’ which means red-bill – the name of the black swan commonly seen in the area. It’s the sixth town mentioned in Lucky Starr’s song I’ve Been Everywhere. Alexandra Headland was first called Potts Point and was renamed in 1915 for King Edward VII’s wife, Queen Alexandra. continued over >

10. Mary Poppins, the London nanny made famous by Julie Andrews, appears in which Queensland town? ANSWER: Maryborough erected a Mary Poppins statue in 2005, recognising that it is the birthplace of her creator, author PL Travers, whose father was manager of the bank in the building where she was born. Travers was eight when her family moved south to Bowral.

9. Which former Prime Minister managed a rock band? ANSWER: Paul Keating was manager for The Ramrods rock band in the 1960s. He’s the only prime minister to have featured on the cover of Australian Rolling Stone magazine. Keating was the only memorable thing about the band and famously admitted he took them “from nowhere to obscurity”.

<from previous page 13. What’s the Australian crawl? ANSWER: No, not the rock band, although that happened later. The Australian crawl is the freestyle swimming stroke developed in Sydney in the late 1890s that set a new standard for the world. It is the most efficient way for a human being to move through the water. 14. What year did the State of Origin rugby league competition come into being? ANSWER: NSW and Queensland have been at war since 1980. It started as a single match which, with Artie Beetson at the helm, Queensland won 20-10 and immediately became one of the most coveted sporting events in Australia. In 1982 it became a two-match plus a decider series of three games. 15. Who was the 2012 Australian of the Year? ANSWER: Geoffrey Rush. The Oscar-winning actor from Toowoomba was chosen for his contribution to the arts, amid some controversy because recipients had previously been chosen to highlight social, political or environmental issues. 16. Who is the f rst (and only) Australian saint? ANSWER: Mary Mackillop, or Saint Mary of the

Cross, revered for her work with needy children and for her rebellious streak (she was excommunicated in 1871 for insubordination) was officially canonised by the Pope in October 2010. She was born in Fitzroy, Victoria in January, 1842. 17. Which former Australian fast bowler from Queensland stood as a candidate for Katter’s Australian Party at the last state election? ANSWER: Carl ‘Mocca’ Rackemann played in 12 tests, 52 one-day internationals and 167 first-class cricket matches. He made his Test debut against England in Brisbane in 1982 and played his last game for Queensland in the 1994-95 Sheffield Shield. He coached in Zimbabwe for two seasons from 2000 and has since returned to farming in his home town of Wondai – and unsuccessfully run for politics. 18. The mother of which Australian actress took a leap for women’s rights when she chained herself to a public bar in 1965? ANSWER: Sigrid Thornton’s mother Merle chained her ankle to the bar of the Regatta Hotel in Brisbane on March 31, 1965, after being refused a drink. Married to a university lecturer and with two children, she said women shouldn’t have to sit with their children in cars outside pubs waiting for their husbands to finish drinking.

19. What is Australia’s national gemstone? ANSWER: The opal is famous for its brilliant colours. Indigenous stories say the colours were created when a rainbow touched the earth and they call it ‘the fire of the desert’. Coober Pedy in South Australia is known as the opal capital of the world. Most of the town has been built underground to beat the heat. 20. Which chant grabbed the nation at the Sydney 2000 Olympics? ANSWER: Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi was widely used in Sydney 2000 and became the cheer at many sporting events, especially cricket. It is a variation of the British football chant Oggy Oggy Oggy that started in the 1970s.

unshine Coast Council is preparing a masterplan for the Nambour Showground to provide direction on how the site will look and function in the future. Councillor Greg Rogerson says the Nambour Showground is an iconic facility in the region and it’s important that people have their say about its future direction. “Nambour Showgrounds is a large multipurpose facility supported by three ovals and a grandstand, equestrian node, tennis courts, badminton courts, catering facilities, and a range of function spaces that host a mix of community and recreational events,” Rogerson says.

“The masterplan will set out a vision for the future function of the showgrounds including a series of actions that can be implemented in order to achieve the vision.” Rogerson is hoping to receive a wide response incorporating many views and ideas for the showground’s future. The draft masterplan is expected to be available for community review in April. Submissions close on Friday February 8. Feedback can be provided through the council’s customer service centre on 5475 7272. Alternatively, send an email to commdevelopment@sunshine coast.qld.gov.au.

RADF applications now open Applications are open for the latest major round of the Regional Arts Development Fund and the Sunshine Coast Council is encouraging eligible residents to enter. Grants of up to $10,000 are available to help locals fund their artistic ventures. The funding is available for a wide range of artists, organisations and community groups to help develop skills, concepts, projects and art careers. Councillor Jenny McKay says the funding can make a big difference and help local artists and organisations develop or share their skills, attend cultural conferences and produce great projects. RADF is a partnership between Arts Queensland and the Sunshine Coast Council to support local arts and culture. Applications close at 5pm on Friday March 1.

Cooroy locals Andy and Nova Flitter have ensured all you need to know about the hinterland town is available at the press of a button. The pair has developed the Cooroy App, for smartphones and tablets, featuring a wealth of information about the town and its community. The Cooroy App includes contact details for doctors, allied health professionals, schools,

churches and community groups, plus public transport timetables and a full business directory. The app is available to download through Apple’s iTunes store and the Google Play store. Andy Flitter hopes the community will get involved with the app and its future development and wants people to notify him about upcoming events and fundraisers to be included. The pair is now looking at doing apps for other small towns. M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

Lacking Motivation? No Excitement for life? Can’t get into exercise, overweight, low libido and poor energy?

Prioritising sustainability More than 100 world experts in bioenergy have descended on the Coast for a technical committee meeting of the International Organisation of Standardisation this week. Standards Australia, in conjunction with the University of the Sunshine Coast, is hosting the meeting for the committee responsible for setting international standards in the field of sustainability for production, supply chain and application of bioenergy. The committee considers the environmental, social and economic impacts of bioenergy. University of the Sunshine Coast professor of forestry operations Mark Brown says it is exciting for USC to be hosting a large group of international experts in the area of sustainable bioenergy. “The development of this ISO standard is an excellent fit with the interests of both the USC Sustainability and Forest Industry research centres that are being rolled out in 2013,” Brown says.

“For the region, recent feasibility studies have shown that there is a strong potential to drive the development of sustainable bioenergy in South-East Queensland, so engagement in the development of this international standard positions both USC and the Sunshine Coast for leadership in this important field of development.” Standards Australia general manager operations Adrian O’Connell says the production and use of bioenergy have potential roles in mitigating climate change, promoting energy security and fostering economic and social development. The meeting of world experts is running all this week.

DON’T MISS 19 OUT!

Dopamine is a brain neurotransmitter that controls motivation, happiness, drive, libido and energy. Eating well and exercising is crucial to be healthy, but the body is reliant on a few other things to be able to be happy, motivated, build muscle, lose fat, and produce energy. Three of those things are the right balance of food groups in your diet, protein absorption, and good nutrients.

send a message to your body to either gain or lose weight. You need to make sure your percentages of each food group is correct, while keeping your portion sizes adequate, but not more than you require. Your body will tell you when you are not eating enough, but will not often tell you when you are eating too much.

Good nutrients, along with proteins, produce dopamine levels in the brain, further making adrenaline, so you have the energy you require to do the exercise you need to achieve the changes in your body you desire. Dopamine is made from tyrosine - an amino acid, B6, folate, zinc, magnesium, B complex, vitamin C and iron. Depression is very common in today’s society, making it hard to get out there and exercise. Both dopamine and serotonin def ciencies are the main causes of depression. Serotonin is also increased in production when you improve your protein absorption and nutrient intake. If depression has been a concern for you, it may be another sign that you have poor protein and nutrient absorption.

With low dietary protein or poor absorption, your muscles cannot grow or repair. Your muscles are the engine of your body that burn calories, the more muscle you have, the more fat you will burn and the faster your metabolism will become. For anyone who is training, you require at least 3-6 protein meals daily, you also need to be absorbing it through the gut. Absorption of protein is often taken for granted. If you’ve been ill, or are a little older, there may be a lack of bacteria in the gut necessary to form a complete amino acid chain, which is where a lot of your proteins are manufactured. You should check this if you are weight training and notice no change in the muscle, or cannot lose weight. You may also notice f at moods as protein is required to make your brain neurotransmitters, hormones, motivation and energy.

Balancing fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in the diet makes a huge difference when it comes to getting results with exercise, once you have the energy to do it. Muscle growth, and weight loss occur easily when you balance your food groups properly, as too much of one, compared to another can inf uence your production of insulin. Insulin will

By addressing each of the above factors, you will have much greater results with the same effort, while improving your mood in the process.

ORGAN DONATIONS INCREASE BUT MISS TARGET

A

ustralia is on track to lift organ donation rates to new levels by 2015 despite missing a key target last year, the nation’s transplant authority says. There were 1052 transplant recipients in 2012 from 354 donors, an increase of four and five per cent, respectively, on 2011. This translated to 15.6 donors per million population (DPMP), a slight increase on 2011 but still shy of the Organ and Tissue Authority’s 16.3 DPMP 2012 target. The authority, established by the Federal Government in 2009, hopes to lift Australian donor rates up to a maximum of 25 DPMP by 2015. Organ and Tissue Authority chief executive Yael Cass says several Australian states and territories have reached or exceeded the 2012 target individually last year, with the Northern Territory, ACT, Tasmania and Queensland standout performers. She says the figures show steady growth and the authority believes the nation is on track to achieve the 2015 target. Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing Catherine King says although the authority had aimed for a greater increase, it was important the donation and transplantation rates had continued to rise. Transplant advocacy group ShareLife says although donor rates had increased it was disappointing Australia still lagged behind world leaders. Spain, Portugal and Croatia have donation rates above 25 DPMP, with rates in Spain and Croatia exceeding 30 DPMP. Meanwhile, Australian kidney and

liver transplants topped previous years in 2012, with 606 kidney transplant recipients and 230 liver transplants, up from 570 and 213 in 2011 respectively. The authority’s national medical director Dr Jonathan Gillis emphasises transplants are still rare, given the strict guidelines around organ donation. Organs can be transplanted only from people who die in hospital intensive care units from either brain death or heart failure, he says. Of 76,600 people who died in Australian hospitals last year, only 790 were in intensive care. Donations were requested from 710 of those and the families of 410 people consented, resulting in 354 eligible donors. The authority rolled out training to 390 medical staff in 74 Australian hospitals last year as part of its strategy to increase organ donor numbers. The training, which educates doctors and nurses on how to discuss organ donation with families of deceased patients, will continue in 2013. AAP

Boomers in for supersized shock Golf, family time and travel ranked high on respondents’ lists of what they were looking forward to. But the savings they thought they would need were well below Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia estimates of $56,236 annually for a couple and $41,090 for singles. The over-50s surveyed were also reluctant to seek formal financial advice – only 30 per cent had done so. If and when it comes to the crunch, 44 per cent of those surveyed said they could go without a new car in their retirements, while 35 per cent were prepared to give up booze and tobacco and just under a third were willing to live without home improvements. AAP

Most Australian baby boomers are financially unprepared for retirement but still don’t think they’ll have to make sacrifices in their winter years. These are the findings of a REST Industry Super survey of 1200 people who were aged over 50 but had not yet retired. One in three respondents admitted they were completely financially unprepared to take the jump, while a further 51 per cent said they were only “somewhat” financially prepared. “What we found is some sizeable gaps between what baby boomers are envisaging for their retirement and what the reality will be,” REST CEO Damian Hill says.

India, Australia to start nuclear energy talks India and Australia plan to begin civil nuclear co-operation talks in March after Canberra agreed last year to open negotiations to export uranium fuel to the energyhungry South Asian nation. The two countries will hold the first round of talks in the Indian capital, Indian Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid said in a statement. “We shall be commencing negotiations on a Civil Nuclear Energy Co-operation Agreement in March,” Khurshid said after discussions with Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr. Australia had earlier refused to sell uranium to India as it has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty but reversed its stand in October last year as it sought to improve ties with Asia’s third biggest economy. “India is a key part of Australia’s future,” Carr says.

AP

[

Bob Carr and Indian Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid The two countries have said the formal negotiations could last up to two years. New Delhi – backed by the United States – won a special exemption in 2008 from the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), which governs global nuclear trade, to allow it to buy reactors and fuel from overseas. Australia is the world’s third-ranking uranium producer. AFP

The website says, “That little ball of fluff you own is a natural born killer.” The site highlights the devastating environmental impact of our furry feline friends. “Every year cats in New Zealand destroy our native wildlife. The fact is that cats have to go if we really care about our environment.” The website features an edited image of a kitten with red eyes and devils horns, while a YouTube video includes the statement “cats are the only true sadists of the animal world”. “We don’t suggest you knock

Forest and Bird advocacy manager Kevin Hackwell says Morgan is raising an important issue. “They do kill an awful lot of native species – native birds, skinks, geckos, wetas,” he says. “If people want to have native birds and other native wildlife in their gardens and in their cities, then they need to be responsible in their cat ownership.” AAP

Joshua Tree spider named after Bono It appeared Bono and arachnids didn’t mix when his Spider-Man musical had a rough Broadway run, but that didn’t keep a biologist from naming a spider species after the U2 singer. Jason Bond of Alabama’s Auburn University has identified 33 new species of trapdoor spider, including three of them in the California desert at Joshua Tree National Park. The park’s namesake is featured in the title and cover of U2’s 1987 album, The Joshua Tree. The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports Bond named two of the spiders after Indian tribes and one, A. bonoi, after Bono. Bond has named other spider species after Angelina Jolie, Cesar Chavez and Stephen Colbert. The trapdoor spider, found in the south-western US, is so-named because it makes a hatch to hide from prey. THE SWEET EST

THING

PREVIEW Parents will no doubt applaud a crackdown on the marketing of sugary drinks to children. But the industry is not happy, saying you can’t pin the blame for our nation’s obesity epidemic on a humble can of soft drink.

H

ealth organisations are trying to take the fizz out of Australians’ love of soft drinks. Along with the launch of a new TV campaign to warn of the dangers of sugary beverages, they’ve also proposed a tax on drinks with high sugar levels. The campaign, Rethink Sugary Drink, which was launched last week, will encourage Australians to give up the soft drink habit and switch to water and reduced-fat milk. The TV ad, borrowed from a similar New York campaign, is part of a call to action by the Cancer Council, Diabetes Australia and the National Heart Foundation to stem obesity rates. They have called for a government tax on sugary drinks and asked schools and non-government organisations to limit their sale and availability. Cancer Council Australia public health committee chair Craig Sinclair says a regular 600 millilitre soft drink contains about 16 packs of sugar. “Soft drinks seem innocuous and consumed occasionally they’re fine, but soft drink companies have made it so they’re seen as part of an everyday diet,” Sinclair said in a statement. “They’re often cheaper than bottled water and are advertised relentlessly to teenagers.”

Sugary drinks including energy, fruit and sports drinks can cause weight gain and obesity, which are risk factors for diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer, the groups say. “They’re being consumed at levels that can lead to serious health issues for the population,” said Sinclair. In addition to taxes, the group also recommends restricting the sale and marketing of sugary drinks to children at schools and limiting their availability in workplaces and public places. However, Australian Beverages Council chief executive Geoff Parker says the campaign is misguided, and his industry has already restricted marketing of sugary drinks to children and clearly labelled kilojoules on cans and bottles. “Focusing on a single source of kilojoules in the diet hasn’t worked in the past and ignores the concept of the total diet,” Parker said in a statement. “No one food or beverage causes

Consuming more kilojoules than what is burnt through physical activity is what leads to weight gain.” Australasian Association of Convenience Stores executive director Jeff Rogut says imposing taxes on sugary drinks will place a burden on business. “The economic ramifications for manufacturers, suppliers and retailers would

be immense, yet the potential for such measures to achieve improved health outcomes is unknown,” he says. “Applying tax to certain items because those items have an emotional association to obesity in the minds of some groups is not only flawed, it’s short-sighted and lazy.” AAP

ive of the top six most popular degrees offered at the University of the Sunshine Coast are in the health and fitness sector. University of the Sunshine Coast’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Birgit Lohmann says all of USC’s allied health offerings have the potential to deliver graduates for the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and health precinct. “Our key allied health programs include nursing science, paramedic science, occupational therapy, nutrition/nutrition and dietetics, psychology, sport and exercise science and biomedical science,” he says. “Depending on which degree students start this year, they will be graduating in either 2015 or 2016,

just in time to be part of the new health developments on the Sunshine Coast.” The Bachelor of Nursing Science is once again the university’s most soughtafter study program, with more than 230 places offered to new nursing science students in semester one this year. It has been the most popular degree since its introduction in 2007. Almost 3000 people have been offered places in degree programs at the University of the Sunshine Coast, starting in semester one. It is a record number of offers.

Lend Lease has released 230 works packages for construction of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital at Kawana. The packages range from contracts for earthworks, block work, carpentry, f oor coverings, windows and curtains, through to signage, whitegoods, mirrors and artwork. Councillor Peter Cox says the packages have been broken into smaller units to give Coast businesses a better opportunity to secure work. “Similar styles of businesses could join together to create a bigger footprint – this in turn may mean

When Alfred Grant introduced the name Kawana back in 1960, blocks of land cost £975, the Sunshine Coast’s population was about 30,000 and the internet was still 35 years away. Now the final piece of the region, Oceanside Kawana, is being introduced to the world via a new Facebook page. With an estimated $5 billion expected to be spent on the 100-hectare precinct over the next few years, Oceanside is shaping up as one of Queensland’s growth hot spots. Stockland regional manager David Laner says expectations for the remaining central Kawana precinct have been building over several years and Stockland is doing all it can to keep people updated of its progress. “Our Birtinya residential

community and the start of construction on the Ramsay Health Care private hospital have so far been the most visible signs of activity here,” he says. “But over the next few months, people will start seeing more happening on the Oceanside Health Hub and new infrastructure to support the whole region. “The options to get involved in Oceanside range from building a new home, to getting a job, investing, or opening your own business. “And interest won’t be coming just from Queensland, so social media is the perfect way to tell the whole world about the coast’s new worldclass destination.” Keep up to date with the latest news via the Facebook page at facebook.com/oceansidekawana.

more opportunities for work on the hospital,” Cox says. “And there may also be opportunities for other partnerships – for example a landscaper could join with a plant nursery, an excavator, a turf farm and an irrigation company to bid for work.” Local businesses must be registered to receive information and tender for the work. Information about the works packages, subsidised workshops and a video to guide contractors through the process can be found online through the ICN Gateway or businessezy.com.au

LUNCHBOXES YOUR KIDS WILL LOVE PREVIEW Packing healthy school lunches your child will happily gobble up is not rocket science. Forward planning and creative food ideas that go beyond the standard sandwich is all it takes.

S

ave yourself time and morning madness by making up lunchboxes the night before, which also allows you to put more thought into what you’re putting in. “You can prepare pasta salads, sandwich fillings or include something from last night’s dinner, like soup in a flask, chicken skewers or a frittata,” says Annabel Karmel, a British author of children’s nutrition and recipe books. Processed foods tend to contain too much salt, sugar, additives and saturated fat. “Instead of chips or chocolate biscuits, try

SANDWICHES ON A STICK • Bread • Cheese • Lunch meat • Grape tomatoes • Olive • Cucumber Cut up cubes of bread, cheese and lunch meat (order 1.5-centimtre-thick slices of ham and turkey at the deli counter). Slide the cubes onto a skewer with other foods your child likes, such as a grape tomato, olive or a cucumber. Include a small tub of mayo or hummus for dipping.

SWEET POTATO CHIPS • 2 medium sweet potatoes • 2 tbsp olive oil • Salt and pepper • Paprika Preheat the oven to 220 degrees. Peel two medium sweet potatoes and slice as thinly as possible. Toss with two tablespoons of olive oil and spread in a thin layer on a baking tray. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and paprika. Bake about 20 minutes or until crispy and pack into an airtight container.

offering homemade popcorn, rice cakes, yoghurt-covered raisins and dried apricots,” Karmel suggests. If your child likes sandwiches, add a special touch by cutting sandwiches into shapes using cookie cutters, or thread fruit onto a straw. “Most children will leave food that takes a lot of effort to eat,” Karmel says. So peel oranges in advance and cover them with plastic wrap; cut carrots into sticks and wrap in damp paper towels. Adding a yoghurt, cream cheese or hummus dip often adds appeal.” AAP

PIZZA ROLL-UPS • 1 wholewheat f our tortilla • 2 tbsp prepared pizza sauce • 12 leaves baby spinach • 3 tablespoons shredded mozzarella • Ham • Diced tomato or red capsicum Place tortilla on a plate and spread pizza sauce over it. Top with an even layer of spinach and sprinkle cheese on top. Melt cheese under the grill and add ham and tomato or capsicum. Carefully roll the tortilla up and slice into two pieces. Wrap in damp paper towels so they stay soft, then wrap tightly in cling wrap or foil.

We Aussies love our beer, but just because it’s Australia Day doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate with your mates in more adventurous ways. These Vodka jelly shots go down very well, and if you use a good quality vodka, they won’t leave you with a headache the next day (as long as you don’t go too hard!). Plus, if you opt for low-calorie jelly, they won’t do as much damage to your waistline as beer.

Method Follow the instructions on the jelly packet, but when it comes to adding the water, replace half or three-quarters of the water with vodka (depending on how strong you want them). Note: Add the boiling water first and let it cool before adding the vodka so the alcohol doesn’t evaporate. While the jelly mixture is cooling, spray the inside of the shot glasses generously with vegetable oil. This will help them slide out easily. To get into the spirit of Australia Day, you can either do one batch of green and one batch of yellow, or mix layers of green and yellow into each glass.

For most of us, beer is the reason we get out of bed every afternoon. It’s also the one product that has helped us ugly dudes score with the opposite sex for centuries! My dad always says, “Beauty is in the eye of the beer-holder”, and as we gear up for Straya Day celebrations, this week’s beer we’re holding is a bloody beauty! Forget the precious minerals being extracted in the West, WA’s real riches come from its breweries. Matilda Bay has been around since the early 1980s and lays claim to some of the nation’s grousest boutique beers, including the world-famous Fat Yak Pale Ale. AUSTRALIANS ON PARADE

T

he Buderim community will celebrate its 26th annual Australia Day parade tomorrow morning, with more than 500 people and 40 floats expected to take part in festivities organised by the Buderim War Memorial Community Association’s Australia Day Committee. The event is the Sunshine Coast’s only Australia Day parade, and committee chair Keith Solomon is encouraging local families to support it, to show the Coast community knows how to mark the national day. “It seems we are becoming more conscious as the years go by that we have much to celebrate in the traditions of our wonderful country

and in its bright future of community fellowship and ongoing peaceful expectations,” Solomon says. For those keen to be on site early, a traditional Lions breakfast will be served from 7am in Middy’s Car Park. The formalities will start with a flag-raising ceremony featuring school captains from Buderim Mountain State School, followed by a Gubbi Gubbi traditional indigenous welcome outside the Old Post Office on Burnett Street. Then, led by the Maleny Light Horse Troop, the parade will leave the Market Place car park around 9am and proceed through the village toward the Buderim War Memorial Hall. At the hall there will be plenty of

food, and entertainment will be provided throughout the parade by the Sunshine Coast Caledonian Pipes and Drums, the Matthew Flinders Anglican College marching band, the Buderim Concert Band, folk music group McGuinness & Co and the Sunshine Brass Band. MAKE/MODEL INFINITI M35H DETAILS Four-door, five-seat luxury sedan with petrol-electric hybrid engine and seven-speed automatic transmission. TECH STUFF 3.5-litre petrol V6 engine produces 225kW, 350Nm torque; electric motor adds 50kW, 270Nm; seven-speed automatic transmission includes gearshift paddles and four-mode drive selector which adjusts performance, steering settings and dynamic cornering enhancement.

uzz Lightyear would love this car. And not just because it’s an Infiniti (you know, “To infinity and beyond”). Sure, he’d love the name. But as any Toy Story buff knows, Buzz loves his buttons, too. And this car certainly has its share of those. In particular, there’s one button that would have Buzz… well buzzing. I call it the force field button. Press it, and this fancy newcomer from Japan activates all manner of devices that make this car all but impossible to crash. Forward collision warnings,

distance control assist functions, side collision warnings, lane departure prevention, intelligent brake assist, the list goes on. All activated by one little button on the steering wheel. I’m not sure I’ve ever driven a machine with so many gizmos. It’s as if the Japanese engineers who built it drove the car through an electronics store and bought up every device they could lay their hands on. It’s a technological tour de force. And happily, it all works brilliantly. Infiniti, for those who don’t know, is the newest luxury marque to hit the Australian market. It’s an extension of

the Nissan brand, in the same way Lexus is the luxury arm of Toyota. The target market for this car is high-end buyers who love their gadgets and love luxury and refinement, but aren’t obsessed by the brand snobbery which drives so many to the top Euro marques. Lexus has tapped into that market very well with a range of cars that are incredibly quiet, comfortable and equipped with all manner of electronics. We’ve previously driven Infiniti’s high-end SUV known as the FX, but the M – a biggish sedan offering a

A Daimler Brand

choice of V6 petrol, turbo-diesel and petrol-electric hybrid engines – further raises the stakes. Our test car was the M35h, the hybrid option in this new Japanese range costing $110,170. It’s not exactly cheap, but a competitive figure given the M35h’s refinement, surprising power, acceleration and, most of all, its gadgets. The car scans the road ahead and will brake if it senses a collision; it monitors whether you’re crossing the white lines on the side of the road and will, using its brakes, gently guide you back to the centre; it spots cars that you can’t see in your mirror blind spots and, if all else fails, it pre-arms the seatbelts and airbags if a crash is unavoidable. But the Infiniti is not just safe. Imagine a car that uses his-andhers smart keys so that, when you unlock it, the car remembers not just your preferred seating position, but also your preferred settings on the climate control and audio. Quietness is a given in cars like this, but the Infiniti takes it one step further with Active Noise Control

front seat. That sound system, by the way, includes a 9.3GB Music Box hard drive. Oh, and those seats, they’re climate-controlled, with in-built heaters and coolers. The Infiniti is, quite simply, a nice place to be. But it’s not perfect. Its hybrid drive system seems slightly less seamless than what we’ve experienced in the comparable Lexus, where the switch from electric to petrol power is imperceptible. In the Infiniti, there’s the occasional hesitation as the V6 kicks into gear. This disappeared completely, though, when we used the dial on the centre

]

console to switch to Sport mode, which delivered an instantly more responsive driving experience. On the plus side, Infiniti claims the M35h is the world’s fastestaccelerating hybrid production car, with a seriously quick zero to 100 kilometres per hour time of just 5.5 seconds. And that’s while sipping just 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres. The Nissan-sourced 3.5-litre V6 gains an added 50kW of boost from the electric motor which, by the way, is powered by the latest Lithium-ion batteries. Like most hybrids, the Infiniti gives you the option of driving in total EV (electric vehicle) mode for limited periods, but there’s a novel twist. In run-silent mode it’s a potential danger to pedestrians due to its ability to arrive without warning, so Infiniti has added a little device that emits an ‘engine noise’. But if you want to sneak in or out of your garage late at night, there’s a button to switch it off. Even Buzz Lightyear didn’t think of that one. George Jetson, eat your heart out.

The luxury of choice.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR HOME

WON’T SELL PREVIEW Chasing that elusive sold sticker? MWP has tips on what to do when the buyers aren’t biting. WORDS Jemma Pearson

I

f your property has been on the market for a while without any buyer interest, don’t get down. Take a serious look at why it’s not selling, and do something about it. Go through this checklist before you do anything else. RIGHT PRICE We’d all like to think our property is worth more than it is, but savvy vendors know it’s not the seller or the agent that sets the price, but the buyers. A price is a psychological thing, so even if a buyer is interested, an amount they deem as too high will stop them even making an offer. Shaving even just a couple of grand off the price might spur buyers into action. If you’ve had offers but they’ve all been too low, it is definitely time to readjust your price. Plenty of vendors have had to sell at what they consider is a loss, but remember if you’re buying in the same market you can win on the next property. Put yourself in a buyer’s shoes and really take a look at the price – would you pay that much for your home if you didn’t have to? SEE HERE Most buyers are out researching the market for many months before they are ready to make an offer, and if your advertising hasn’t changed, they’ll be bored of your home by the time they’re ready to buy. Keep your advertising interesting by changing the look of your ad in My Property Preview and the agent’s window. Not getting any

[ 34 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J AN UARY 25, 20 1 3

34.indd 1

bites on the ad that features the swimming pool and deck? Re-design it to include photos of the large kitchen instead. If you’ve been running small ads and getting no response, it might be worth considering splashing out on a series of full-page ones. Get a professional to take the photos to show your home in the best light, and ask your agent to monitor response of ads so you can find out what works and what doesn’t. THAT’S REFRESHING Because most buyers do lots of research before buying, they are taking note of what properties are selling quickly and the ones that aren’t and sadly, most will avoid properties that have sat on the market for too long. This is because they think – rightly or wrongly – that there must be something wrong with a home that’s been for sale for six months but still hasn’t sold. If they do make an offer, they can use the length of time it’s been on the market to try to get you down on the price, even if they think it’s worth more. Often the best

QUICK TIP Talk to your agent about changing the time of your open home. If you’ve been opening on a Saturday morning for months, what about changing to a Wednesday night or Sunday afternoon? You might get potential buyers through who can’t make Saturday mornings.

M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

1/22/2013 1:08:59 PM

thing you can do, therefore, is take your home off the market if you can afford to. Removing your property from the market for a few months means when you decide to relist, you’ll be doing so in front of a whole new crop of buyers. NEAT AND TIDY The worst thing you can do in a quiet market is to overcapitalise on renovations. But spending time, and sometimes a bit of money, to make your home more appealing is a wise investment. Get honest feedback from your agent, friends and those who come through open homes on what has turned them off about the property. It might be as simple as changing that green feature wall in the main bedroom, high-pressure cleaning the driveway or saying goodbye to those ugly plants in the garden. Often a good tidy up, a lick of paint and some mulch around the plants is all you need. And get rid of clutter. If you do nothing else before open homes, store away trinkets, fridge magnets and toys. You might love your collection of vintage porcelain beer mugs, or that giant boudoir shot of you and

your wife in the bedroom, but these things can detract from your home and alienate serious buyers. WATCH AND LEARN When selling your home, it’s OK to be nosy, so check out other open homes, particularly for properties that are similar to yours in terms of locations and features. How are the open homes run? Did it sell via auction or private treaty? Take the time to find out what has sold, for what price, how quickly and why. If you notice lots of homes that are listed in your area are selling well, what can you learn from that? Perhaps buyers are keen for homes under $500,000 and yours is listed for $515,000. Can you shave off $20,000 to get it sold? OTHER BITS Be open to advice, from your agent, those looking through your home and other experienced vendors. If your home is not selling, don’t blame your agent. It might be that listing with another agency will get better results, but an agent-vendor relationship is a two-way street. What can you learn from the experience? Did you heed the advice of the agent?

TAKE A BREAK Decided to take your property off the market? You don’t have to just sit on your hands. Get proactive even if you are just waiting it out. Do some research to find out what time is best to put it back on the market and then set a date to head back to your agent. Ask yourself why you are selling in the first place. Need the cash? Talk to your financial adviser or bank manager. Maybe refinancing is the way to go. If you’re keen to buy another property, perhaps you can just rent out your current home – you might find that the tax advantages of having an investment make it a viable alternative, and you can always sell in a year or two.

QUICK TIP Make yourself scarce at open homes – buyers will feel more comfortable talking freely with agents if the owners are not around. Before your agent arrives, open up the house to let the fresh air in, light some scented candles and turn on some relaxing music, set on a low volume..

NEWS & VIEWS

LEAGUE PLAYER NOW AT PLATINUM

F

ormer professional rugby league player Chris Flannery has returned to the Sunshine Coast after a stellar career, and has hung up his rugby boots for a new stint in real estate. Flannery grew up in Buddina and went to Kawana State High School before leaving the Coast to join the Sydney Roosters in 1998, when he was just 18. He’s now back in his home town and has joined the sales team at Platinum Properties.

Flannery played 121 games for the Roosters between 1998 and 2007, with highlights including scoring a try in the Roosters’ 2002 NRL grand final win against the New Zealand Warriors, a spot in the 2003 World Challenge-winning side and the 2004 Sydney Roosters Clubman of the Year award. He also played 10 State of Origin matches for Queensland, including in the 2006 series win. In 2007 Flannery moved to the UK to play for St Helens, in north-west England. However, after 139 games there he and his wife Renee, who he met while playing touch football in grade 12, decided to return to the Coast to raise their two young daughters. “[Growing up] I did nippers at Kawana Surf Club in summer and played for the Kawana Dolphins Rugby league club through the winter,” Flannery says. “I was a very keen surfer and loved and still do love the beach, and that was one of the reasons I came home from the UK – I wanted my kids to grow up around the beach lifestyle, as well as grow up with their grandparents who all live here on the Coast. “I’m very family orientated and most of our family lives here on the Coast so were always very keen to move back home to be with our families.” Rather than being purely a post-rugby decision, the move to real estate was prompted during Flannery’s playing career. “While playing at the Roosters I met John McGrath, who invited a few of us [Roosters players] to do some work experience and training at his Sydney office,” Flannery says. “I loved the experience and ever since then have had a keen passion for property, and now have extensive

Chris Flannery then (above) and now (left) experience in the researching, buying and selling process having bought and sold several properties here on the Sunshine Coast, Sydney and in England.” After making the decision to enter the industry full time, Flannery says he chose to join the team at Platinum Properties based on the agency’s strong local reputation. As well as a passion for the industry, he says he believes the skills he developed in his professional sporting career will set him apart in his new venture as well. “I see a lot of similarities between rugby league and the real estate industry – I think the main one being that you will get out of it what you put in,” Flannery says. “So in that respect I think my league career has prepared me perfectly, as it’s provided me with critical skills such as hard work, dedication, honesty and an ability to always focus on the end result.”

Denis Brosnan from Brosnan Golf, Greg Norman & Darren Rix

Local agent still in the swing of things Darren Rix from RE/MAX Realty Excellence is another agent with strong ties to sport. Rix was a pro golfer and coach for many years, and is recognised for developing teaching opportunities for PGA members overseas. He now specialises in selling golf course and lifestyle properties here on the Sunshine Coast, but his golfing expertise is still in

demand, and he was invited to participate in an invitation-only event featuring master Greg Norman during the recent PGA Championship. Rix says the event focussed on the future of the golf industry in Australia and specifically the future of the PGA event, and partly on the impact of local golf course development on residential estates.

Speaking of real estate agents with sporting backgrounds, former golf professional Ollie Gebert has recently joined the team at Elders Palmwoods. Gebert, who relocated to the Sunshine Coast from Sydney late last year, has experience in a wide range of sales roles and says real estate was a natural progression, given he has always had a strong interest in property. “I absolutely love the change and the laidback culture – I have found the people to be very friendly,” Gebert says. “I hear a lot of people talking about the market conditions being either good or bad, buyer’s market or seller’s market… For me this is the only market I know, and since starting with Elders Palmwoods, there have been plenty of buyer enquiries and lots of great properties come on the market.” In his short time with Elders Gebert says he has already had the

NEWS & VIEWS

GET OUT TO A GARAGE SALE Karl and Lindi Rademeyer from RE/MAX Property Services are hosting a mega garage sale in Ivadale Lakes next Saturday February 2, from 6.30am to 9.30am. The Rademeyers are hoping more than 30 Ivadale Lakes residences will take the opportunity to clear out some unwanted belongings while also raising funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Participants pay a $10 registration fee, which

goes to the foundation, and then are able to keep the profits they make from selling their goods on the day. Buyers are also welcome to make donations of their own while browsing the wares on offer. “We are covering all expenses, so anything else collected or donated goes to the Make-A-Wish Foundation,” Karl says. “The main aim is to raise some money and the second aim is to create a nice sense of community spirit amongst the Ivadale

Lakes community, with everyone getting out to browse at each other’s garage sales.” Those not living in the Ivadale Lakes community can stop off at the marquee on Ivadale Lakes Boulevard, near the convenience store, to pick up an information pamphlet and map of participating homes. Alternatively, if you can’t make it to the garage sale but would still like to make a donation contact Karl on 0402 919 955.

CREATING NEW COMMUNITIES Stockland releases new home and land packages to suit every taste and every budget.

T

he Sunshine Coast’s largest residential developer has kicked off 2013 with a new collection of home and land packages and an incentive for buyers. Stockland has unveiled almost 20 new packages across its Coast communities under its ‘Change for Life’ campaign, which launched this week. Builders are also getting a fresh start for 2013 with new designs included in the latest Stockland catalogue. New home and land packages in the January 2013 collection start from $323,532 and range from compact designs to large family homes on big blocks. Land prices start at $159,950 for a home site at Bells Reach in Caloundra. Other participating

LUXURY NOOSA LIVING SNAPPED UP A limited number of additional luxury apartments will be released to the market at Viridian Noosa, following strong buyer demand on the 40 properties that were made available as part of the development’s re-launch before Christmas. Marketing agent 360 Project Marketing reports that the summer sales rush included locals and investors keen to snap up the exclusive properties at discount prices. The new release includes one- and two-bedroom apartments priced from $280,000. These prices represent a discount of approximately 60 per cent on original listings.

“We always knew that these apartments would generate huge interest, as they are in a prime coastal location and are managed by the renowned Outrigger Little Hastings Street Resort and Spa team, but the demand to date has been absolutely phenomenal,” says sales manager Don Stallman. “We did not anticipate releasing any further stock until a little later in the year, but we are ready to meet market demand and there are still some great deals available.” He adds, “Given the pace of sales over the past month, I would urge any prospective buyers to act quickly as there is limited stock available at these currently reduced prices.”

communities include Brightwater at Mountain Creek, Birtinya at Oceanside and Doonella Noosa. Stockland Queensland general manager Kingsley Andrew says the Change for Life campaign is aimed at making new home ownership a reality for more Queenslanders. “Our challenge is to provide the widest possible choice of new home options that are not only great value but keep up to date with people’s changing lifestyles,” Andrew says. “That means creating communities where new home buyers want to live and working with our builder partners to have the latest home designs available.” Stockland customers will be eligible for $5000 in Visa gift cards from Stockland and another $5000 from its partner builders on selected

home and land packages until February 25. While first-home buyers are even better off, saving a total of $25,000 with the combined $10,000 bonus from Stockland and the existing $15,000 grant. Bells Reach is adjacent to the Bellvista community and features a diverse range of living options catering for all family types and sizes, including innovative terrace homes and spacious home sites surrounded by natural bushland. Birtinya at Oceanside is a community in Kawana, located near the beach, the future Oceanside Town Centre and the Health Hub. Doonella Noosa is an exclusive natural enclave on the shores of Lake Doonella, close to Hastings Street, the Noosa Civic retail precinct, premium golf courses and the beach.

BUILDERS TAKE HEART The ABS Building Activity update for the September 2012 quarter showed a two per cent rise in new home commencements, the Housing Industry Association (HIA) reported last week. “The increase in dwelling commencements in the September 2012 quarter is the second consecutive quarterly improvement. With 37,027 commencements, this is the strongest quarterly result in over a year and no doubt assisted by the 75 basis points cut from the official cash rate over May and June last year,” says HIA economist Geordan Murray. In seasonally adjusted terms the number of detached dwelling commencements increased by 4.3 per cent in the first quarter of the 2012/13 financial year, although remains slightly below (1.4 per cent) the level of a year ago. There was decline of 1.3 per cent in the number of multi-unit dwellings commenced in the quarter, but the level remains 5.1 per cent higher than the level recorded in the corresponding quarter a year ago. “NSW posted an encouraging result with a 9.5 per cent increase in commencements in the quarter, although it is likely to be influenced by changes to government

incentives that occurred around this time. The headline result was underpinned by a substantial 18.8 per cent lift in detached dwelling commencements as well as a 1.8 per cent lift in multi-unit commencements,” says Murray. Taking a look around the other states, dwelling commencements (seasonally adjusted) increased in Victoria by 2.9 per cent and in Western Australia by 23.6 per cent. The number of commencements fell by 14.2 per cent in Queensland, 9.4 per cent in South Australia, 0.4 per cent in Tasmania, 29.9 per cent in the NT and 3.3 per cent in the ACT.

David & Jodie listed our house after it had been on the market for 7 months with another agent and sold it within weeks. Their approach was refreshing and extremely professional – exceeding that of any real estate agents we’ve dealt with. We found David & Jodie to be experienced, knowledgeable and trustworthy – they didn’t say something just because they thought it was what we wanted to hear. The result from our perspective was a hassle-free marketing campaign, a quick sale process and a great price. We highly recommend David & Jodie, whose approach took the stress out of what had been a highly stressful situation for us. Kate & Mark Kippenberger

ARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 The Leo full moon and sun/ Jupiter aspects are an impulsive combination. But remember – it takes a short time to burn bridges and a lot longer to mend them.

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 It will be hard to get the balance right between your personal and professional lives. The pressure’s on at work, but don’t let it blind you to the pressing needs of loved ones at home.

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 Your restless mind needs constant stimulation so start planning a trip or learning something new. But beware spreading unsubstantiated gossip – you could end up with egg on your face.

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 Avoid lending money to others. You’re liable to make decisions based purely on your emotions – which are fluctuating wildly under the fiery full moonbeams.

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 The full moon in Leo boosts your energy levels and gets your creative juices flowing. Plus Jupiter boosts your confidence and amps up your charisma and chutzpah!

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 Your days are usually organised with military precision. Sunday’s fiery full moon tosses your timetable out the window. Aim to spend some quiet time with yourself.

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 Get ready for full moon madness, as loopy lunar energy upsets your plans. Quit being a laidback Libran, as you tackle challenges with extra energy and enthusiasm.

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 You’ve got so much on your professional plate that the last thing you need is domestic dramas! But that’s exactly what you’ll get, as the full moon heats up your home zone.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Jupiter and the fiery full moon charge your motor, so it’s not a good weekend to be cooped up inside. Travel, sport and exercise are positive ways to expend your excess energy.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 Expect dramas involving the big two – sex and money. Clever Capricorns will resist the urge to control everyone around you. Cool compromise is the smart way to go.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 The full moon amplifies your unpredictable nature. You’re in the mood to shake things up, especially when it comes to close relationships. Are you ready for the consequences?

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 Your spirituality shifts into top gear this weekend, as the full moon illuminates your soul zone. The focus is also on your physical wellbeing so attend to health issues ASAP.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Righto! The swell is slowly building from the east up to two to three foot. Unfortunately it will be bringing an east wind with it. There is really only one spot I think will be worth a checking and I’m not telling you where it is. Okay, okay, in the spirit of Australia Day, Double Island might be worth the drive! Be warned, though, we print 62,500 copies of this magazine. Failing that just get in the ocean and enjoy what is on offer, oh, and do not get between a pair of mating manta rays – that could get a little weird. Enjoy your weekend!

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Mangrove jack and mud crabs are up in Petrie Creek and around the Bli Bli Islands. Find jew and estuary cod around the Motorway Bridge pylons using live bait. Flathead, bream and whiting can be caught from Twin Waters to Cotton Tree with prawns and yabbies the best bait. SURF: The coffee rock at Mudjimba is returning bream and tarwhine with better quality at night using fowl gut. Flathead and dart are near the geotextile bag walls at the Maroochy River bar. Catch whiting on pippies along Maroochydore Beach. OFFSHORE: Mixed reef f sh are taking squid and f sh f llet from the Gneerings to Murphy’s Reef. Black-tipped reef sharks are a bit of a nuisance. The Barwon Banks returning pearl perch, red emperor and squire using whole pillies. FRESHWATER: Borumba Dam is returning saratoga on f oated shrimp and f ies. Head to Lake Macdonald for small bass and jew with bait or f shing lures. Somerset Dam is f ring for bass. Expect Golden perch and jew on live shrimps and deep divers at Queen Street and down to Red Rock.
