Our Best Year Yet

This annual report is by far the best one yet. This past fiscal year we shattered previous records in terms of giving, and we successfully closed the Scaling the Summit campaign. Our students, faculty, staff and alumni broke ground on three major campus additions — the Darby Nursing & Health Science Center, Stadium Phase Two, and our ninth residence hall. More than that, it demonstrated in the words of Head Football Coach Todd Knight, that “dreams really do come true at Newberry College.”

This report is a testament to your continued dedication to Newberry College, your support of our students, and your faith in our mission. Thanks to you, we are beating odds, bucking trends, and exceeding expectations.

We have compiled this publication not only as a breakdown of fundraising numbers, but as a token of our enduring gratitude, and as a celebration of all we have accomplished together. This year marks my 10th anniversary as president. The Newberry College of 2022 is not the Newberry College of 2012, and that’s a good thing. The Newberry College of 2022 is stronger, larger, and more passionately supported than it has ever been. And none of it could have happened if it hadn’t been for you.

Your phenomenal support means greater accessibility through scholarships. It means new, state-of-the-art spaces to enhance the learning-living environment. It means innovative academic programs and partnerships that improve quality of life. Your support enables us to attract and retain the best faculty, staff and coaches, and they will prepare our students for a fulfilling life after college.

Though we pause to reflect on all we’ve done, we have never been ones to rest on our laurels. There is still important work to be done. Now that the capital campaign has closed, we are continuing to fund and implement key priorities, including renovations to the historic MacLean Gymnasium, additions to the Smith Road Athletic Complex, and construction for a new student center. And we hope you will continue to be a part of our life-changing story.

Your generosity has allowed us to realize the success of this past year and has given us hope for a bright future.

Thank you.

Hail Scarlet and the Gray, Maurice W. Scherrens President

Greetings From Institutional Advancement

Looking back on these last two years leading the Office of Institutional Advancement, I am filled with enormous gratitude and pride in our Newberry College family. Not only did the 2022 fiscal year set a record at $8.5 million raised, it coincided with the official closing of the Scaling the Summit comprehensive capital campaign. Gifts to the Newberry Fund, the College’s annual fund for operations, neared $1 million for the first time. Our endowment fund saw double the number of gifts that it normally would receive. We also saw an influx of new donors and retained many of our seasoned supporters.

This past fundraising year demonstrates an incredible vote of confidence in Newberry College. We are succeeding boldly on multiple fronts — athletics, academics, student enrollment, and alumni support — at a time when many institutions of higher education are not. Our success is owed to the dedication of our students, faculty, staff, and the leadership and vision of President Maurice Scherrens, as well as the support of our wonderful alumni, friends of the College, church partners, and our local community.

This success also makes for a stronger Institutional Advancement team and has led to better outreach and communication to our supporters. In this past year, we’ve seen more engagement on social media, as well as greater visibility with marketing, advertising, and traditional media. We’ve redesigned our website to make it more user-friendly and launched an interactive online campus map. We’ve also benefitted greatly from our new partnership with Blackbaud, which has improved our ability to connect our donors’ passions with a specific purpose.

I want to close on a personal note. As one of the first people in my family to receive a college degree, I know that nothing can change the direction of your life like higher education can. Just as our Office of Institutional Advancement strives to connect our donors with projects that meet their passions, Newberry College has matched my passion for higher education and helping students learn and reach their potential. Thank you for all you do to support Newberry College. I can’t wait to see what the future will bring!

Throughout the year, our alumni have been our biggest champions and advocates, and have made a big statement that they feel the value of their degree has increased. We’ve experienced unprecedented alumni engagement, from Scarlet & Gray Giving Week to attendance at alumni events. Even as we continue to explore ways to connect with alumni virtually, we were thrilled to return to in-person gatherings and events, including Homecoming and our Scaling the Summit Campaign donor recognition gala. I continue to be amazed by your level of commitment to supporting our alma mater and strengthening it for future generations. Thank you, Newberry College alumni and friends, for making this our best year yet!

Creating Opportunities

A Lasting Legacy

Near the end of his life, World War II veteran and devoted Lutheran Ceil Harvey Bowers cemented his dedication to Christian education with a bequest in his will. A native of Little Mountain and past president of the South Carolina Lutheran Men in Mission, he was a heartful supporter of Newberry College, belonging to the President’s Club and to the Heritage Club as a charter member. He set aside a portion of his life’s earnings to establish two endowed chairs at Newberry College to continue his support of a beloved institution and to honor his late wife, Edith. In March 2022, Newberry College announced that his dream was coming to fruition. Through the help of his nephew, William “Bill” Dukes of Chapin, the College has created the Cecil B. Harvey Bowers Chair in Religion and the Edith Counts Bowers Chair in Accounting. The chairs are expected to be awarded in 2023. This is a gift that will serve as an enduring tribute to the Bowers family and benefit the College for many years to come by supporting faculty research and instruction, and outreach to the community.

endowed award by this year’s convention in June. When the project concluded, the group had more than doubled its initial goal. South Carolina has the fourth largest nursing shortage in the nation, with more than 10,000 nursing vacancies expected by 2030. The organization’s hope is that the scholarship will help alleviate the shortage of qualified nurses in the Palmetto State and nationwide.

Faith, Hope and Love

In July 2022, the South Carolina Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America presented Newberry College with a gift nearing $25,000 to establish an endowed scholarship for nursing students. The project began a year ago with the organization’s convention project committee pledging to raise $10,000 to start the

Looking to the Future

In August 2022, the College conferred master’s degrees for the first time in 94 years. The graduates earned their Master of Science degrees in organizational development and leadership. This commencement came a year after the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges approved an accreditation level change for Newberry College to offer graduate degrees. We are proud of this first cohort of graduate students and look forward to watching this program grow! We also hope to be able to offer fellowships — scholarships specifically for graduate students — in the near future. If you would like to support a fellowship opportunity, please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement at Institutional.Advancement@newberry.edu or 803.321.5363.

A Jolly Good Fellow

The American Academy of Nursing is one of the most influential and prestigious institutions in the field. The academy brings together the most accomplished leaders in nursing to advance health care. Those leaders, called Fellows, earn their place in the organization through their extraordinary contributions in health policy, research, administration, practice and academia. And beginning this fall, the academy will become even stronger for having Dr. Betsy M. McDowell as one of its own.

“I’m extremely honored to have my contributions to nursing education, pediatric nursing and theory-based practice recognized on a global scale in this way,” said McDowell. “I’m humbled by the recognition and pleased to serve as a role model for other nurses.”

McDowell, professor emerita of nursing at Newberry College, helped establish the College’s nursing program, which began classes in 2009. She served as the department’s founding chair until her retirement in 2018. Her career has included 48 years of teaching in prelicensure programs in South Carolina, including a decadeslong stint at Lander University. Her knowledge base, anxiety control, test-taking skills framework, or KATTS, focuses on the three components of high achievement on the NCLEX-RN licensure exam. Since its introduction in 2008, McDowell’s framework has been adopted by at least 12 prelicensure programs across the United States.

She said her career’s most prized accomplishments include helping children and their families through critical illness or traumatic experiences, such as hurricanes and domestic violence; successfully merging theory-based education with clinical practice and sharing her knowledge; preparing qualified, compassionate nursing professionals; and bringing Newberry College’s nursing program into fruition.

She said some of her keys to success have been persistence, assembling good teams, actively seeking knowledge and professional growth, and seeking the Lord’s guidance in decision-making.

McDowell now serves as president of the Neuman Systems Model Trustees Group, which maintains the integrity and relevance of the model for nursing instruction. She also chairs the Pediatric Nursing Excellence Task Force for the Society of Pediatric Nurses, drawing on her experience as a pediatric critical care nurse.

She also established the Mickey/McDowell Nursing Award in 2011, given annually to nursing students who demonstrate academic excellence.

McDowell will be one of 250 distinguished leaders — and one of five from South Carolina — to be inducted as fellows on Oct. 29, 2022, as part of the academy’s annual health policy conference in Washington.

The Athletic Club has been the leading auxiliary for Newberry College athletics since 1952. The organization supports student scholarships, academic support, training, facilities, and operation expenses. The Club also provides exclusive benefits to members.

Athletic Club

The Athletic Club hosted two golf tournaments that raised a total of $30,880. The Club also hosted the Howling Wolf Night event in March, which raised a total of $10,624.

In May, associate director Sharon Bryant ’11 was promoted to director of the Athletic Club. Bryant has been with the Club since 2006 and has served in many roles to keep athletics strong and growing, including director of ticket operations and managing fundraising events. She is an invaluable asset to the College and student-athletes!

The Club finished the year strong with $312,517 raised, an increase of $21,690 over the previous year. In addition, the Club ended the year with 294 members (270 returning members and 24 new members).

A Linguistic Legacy Lives On

Nicholas P. Mitchell was renowned for his mastery of the English language. During his time as a Newberry College student in the 1910s, his artful command of words earned him medals in debates, oratory and even the title of class poet. At the time, this was considered especially impressive, considering the fact that English was Mitchell’s second language — one he had been speaking for just a few years prior.

In 1911, at the age of 15, Mitchell immigrated to the United States from Greece. Promptly after he arrived in the land of opportunity, he started a business in downtown Newberry, selling homemade candy, confections, fruit, nuts, ice cream and soft drinks, with delivery to boot. Within four years, his business success and consumer demand allowed him to open a second location on Main Street, complete with a parlor for serving.

With a thriving enterprise and a position in the community, Mitchell enrolled at Newberry College in 1914, “that he might improve his education and familiarize himself with the English language and people,” the local Herald and News reported.

By his second year, Mitchell competed for the sophomore declaimer’s medal, a contest in which students re-give famous or important speeches at commencement.

Mitchell was also an active member and president of the Excelsior Literary Society. Excelsior, along with the Phrenakosmian and the women’s Philomathian societies, helped students sharpen their skills in composition, debate, deportment, literature and oratory.

In late 1916, his junior year, he became a full United States citizen. He earned his bachelor’s degree two years later with medals in history and philosophy.

“His poetic and oratorical abilities are well known and he deserves special credit for his work at Newberry because of the handicap under which he has labored,” wrote the 1918 College yearbook editors, alluding to his triumphant leap over the language barrier.

In his will, Mitchell set aside $250,000 to establish a permanent endowment fund, which would provide scholarships for students who major or minor in a foreign language and who have a financial need. Currently, the College offers a major and minor in Spanish, along with basic and intermediate classes in German.

Mitchell’s namesake scholarship benefits students who, like him, strive to become more engaged citizens in the global society — all while making the journey a little sweeter.

Scarlet & Gray Week May 2 -6, 2022

Building the Berry

We had so much fun during our third Scarlet & Gray Giving Week! This year’s theme was “Building the Berry” and each day had a different focus, encouraging donors to give to different areas of campus. Throughout the week, Institutional Advancement staff set up a table near the Victory Bell for students, faculty and staff to stop by to ask questions, make a gift to the College, and even play a round (or two, or three) of Jenga! Nursing students had an opportunity to sign a beam that will be placed in the new Darby Nursing & Health Science Center, and student-athletes signed a piece of drywall that will be placed in the new field house. It all culminated with the Senior Walk on Yost Portico.

The John Bachman Founders Society

Honors for the Year 2022: Zeus Industrial Products, Inc.

The John Bachman Founders Society was established by the Board of Trustees to recognize individuals, couples, churches, foundations and corporations who have made significant contributions over the years to Newberry College. The Distinguished Member Award is the highest honor bestowed upon a benefactor of the College, and pays tribute to the recipients’ exceptional generosity, dedication and civic vision.

Previous honorees have included Billy and Amelia Walker, Jim and June Gerding, Robert and Janice McNair, Charlie and Jean Haggard, Wayne and Patricia Pearson, the Melvin and Dollie Younts Foundation, and Gordon and Anne Darby. This year, the Distinguished Member Award is presented to Zeus Industrial Products, Inc.

John Winarchick, former president and CEO of Zeus, accepted the award at the Donor Recognition Gala on April 29, 2022. Winarchick retired in 2020 after 31 years with the company. He has left his own legacy of excellence and philanthropy, and he continues to support Newberry College, serving on the Board of Trustees since 2021.

Zeus is an internationally renowned polymer solutions manufacturer, operating world-class research and development facilities that focus on medical and industrial applications. Since its founding in 1966, Zeus has become a global leader, touching nearly every major industry.

Zeus has supported Newberry College since 2012, and currently holds the distinction of being the College’s leading corporate donor. Zeus has brought about renovations to Brokaw Hall, Newberry College’s largest residence hall; the modernization of several classrooms and laboratories; and improvements to the Smith Road Complex and other athletic facilities. Zeus has been a leading supporter of the Scaling the Summit campaign from base camp, contributing particularly to the Darby Nursing & Health Science Center.

The late Frank Tourville, the founder of Zeus, was an inspiration to everyone he met. His story is one of a man who not only achieved the pinnacle of success in business; but who also whose deep faith and generosity made all the difference for countless others. He embodied the phrase, “We can do it better.” It would be an understatement to say that Mr. Tourville changed the world for the better. He passed away on March 16, 2021, at the age of 87, leaving behind his wife, Pearl, and their four sons, 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Endowments: The Gifts That Keep on Giving

An endowment is a forever gift - a way to ensure your support that Newberry College lives on in perpetuity. By establishing an endowment, or contributing to an existing one, you create a lasting legacy for future generations of the Newberry College family.

How an Endowment Works

When you make an endowed gift to Newberry College, only a small portion of your gift will be spent each year. The balance is invested, allowing the gift to live on in perpetuity. Creating a named endowment is perfect way to reflect your love and admiration for the person for many years to come.

Funding Your Endowment

There are many ways to fund your endowment without using cash. Some allow you to establish your gift now, while others won’t go into effect until after your lifetime.

• Appreciated assets. Using appreciated assets that you have owned for more than one year may allow you to eliminate capital gains tax on the asset’s appreciation

• Life insurance. Name Newberry College the beneficiary of your life insurance policy, or make us the owner of a policy you no longer need

• Retirement plan assets. Consider naming Newberry College the beneficiary of your retire ment plan assets. After your lifetime, the funds will go to establishing your endowment

• A gift in your will or living trust. Your gift to Newberry College can be a specific amount or a percentage of your residuary estate

The View from the Mountaintop

Eight years ago, we embarked on a journey upward. We imagined a Newberry College with the infrastructure for growth and the resources for academic innovation. We knew it would be a steep climb, but with the right people and the right tools, we knew we could make it. This fiscal year marked the end of the Scaling the Summit comprehensive capital campaign, and now we pause to survey how far we have come, and to honor those who have powered our ascent.

To be able to recognize each person who has been part of the Scaling the Summit campaign since its inception, the full donor list is available online.

A Table with a View

Donor Recognition Gala April 29, 2022

“I am reminded of mountaintop experiences in the Bible, one in particular,” said the Rev. Dr. Wayne Kannaday ’75, beneath the spotlight of the setting sun. “Atop the Mount Tabor, for example, Peter, along with James and John, witnessed the transfiguration of Jesus, glowing in light and surrounded suddenly by Moses and Elijah. This was such a mystical ‘high’ for Peter that he wanted to build booths so they could stay there.

“For us, while this moment can’t last forever, we do have tables, chairs, a lectern, and what has already become a wonderful evening. Tonight, we gather for such a mountaintop experience. We have scaled the summit.”

Thank you to everyone who provided the provisions, the tools, and the moral support for the Scaling the Summit capital campaign.

The Center for Teacher Education

An abandoned elementary school has found new life, with teachers for students

The building now a satellite of the Newberry College campus began its life as Speers Street Elementary. From its construction in 1961, the facility educated scores of Newberry children from early childhood to fifth grade. Even during its heyday, the school’s connections to Newberry College, just up the street, were tight. Education majors often completed their studentteaching requirements there, and the school was the first employer for numerous Newberry graduates. By the early 2000s, however, the student population had begun to outgrow the one-story building. Students were moved nearby to what is now Newberry Elementary School, and Speers Street closed in 2006.

Shortly after the school ceased operation, its next chapter was already being written. With an ideal environment for training aspiring teachers, Newberry College announced in 2012 that it had acquired the property from the Newberry County School District, with support from Newberry residents Mike and Denise Reid.

Renovations began in spring 2015. Classrooms were outfitted with state-of-the-art instructional technology, and new labs and meeting spaces were created, such as the ever-popular Dufford Diversity Lab. The new Center for Teacher Education opened for classes in fall 2016. In addition to the teacher education curriculum, the program hosts the annual GROW Symposium, which provides professional development and job fairs for senior education students from across the state. The center is also home to the RETAIN Center of Excellence, which focuses on increasing retention of Palmetto State teachers through mentoring and support in their first three years in the classroom.

Though the Speers Street campus’ hallways aren’t as full as in its grade school peaks, its classrooms are educating more students than ever before.

Melvin & Dollie Younts Athletic Performance Center

The forge of champions

Since the Melvin & Dollie Younts Athletic Performance Center rose at the stadium’s north end zone, the investment has already delivered returns to the Newberry College community. College Athletics has turned the 6,750-square-foot training and sports medicine facility into a forge of champions within its first two years in operation.

Playing 20 games in one calendar year can take its toll, especially physically. “That was one thing I was worried about coming from the spring season into the fall. Could our bodies handle it?” Knight told The State on Aug. 24, 2022.

These two incredible football seasons — under five months apart — were the first since the Younts Athletic Performance Center was completed.

In spring 2021, Wolves football played an unprecedented spring season, which came after the fall 2020 season was postponed due to the pandemic. According to head coach Todd Knight, the Wolves were one play away from the South Atlantic Conference championship. The season’s only loss was to rival Lenoir-Rhyne in double overtime.

That fall, the Wolves finally brought the conference crown home to Newberry, for the fourth time in program history. The momentum of this second monumental season carried the team to round two of the NCAA Division II playoffs. The second game, against Bowie State University in Maryland, narrowly brought the Wolves’ winning streak to an end, by a score of 13-10.

“The energy level within our program just skyrocketed,” Knight said. “Just from a strength and conditioning standpoint alone, I’ve seen that pay off for us, where our kids are stronger. We are in better shape. We are a little bit bigger, we are a little bit faster. Now we have just as good a facility, when it comes to strength and conditioning, as anybody in the league, and we’re seeing it pay off.”

The Wolves are picked to lead the conference again in fall 2022, also carrying their highest-ever ranking (No. 9) from the American Football Coaches Association.

Remembering Melvin Younts

Aug. 19, 1929 — Aug. 27, 2022

Melvin K. Younts, of Fountain Inn, South Carolina, was one of South Carolina’s most influential philanthropists. The attorney and real estate investor and his late wife, Dollie, established their family’s foundation in 2002 to support Christian organizations, colleges and universities. In addition to championing Newberry College, the foundation also made substantial gifts to initiatives at Clemson University, Columbia College, Furman University and North Greenville University, among others. He will be deeply missed.

Darby Nursing & Health Science Center

Building a new regional leader in health care

As you are reading this annual report, progress is being made at the corner of College and Evans streets in Newberry. Here is where the College’s new 11,000-square-foot Nursing & Health Science Center will train the coming generations of health care professionals. Only a matter of months stand between this community and new heights as a leader in health care.

In June 2022, Newberry College and Newberry County Memorial Hospital announced a partnership that will establish a 1,200-square-foot clinic health clinic, adjoining the Nursing & Health Science Center. The agreement will also provide funds to grow the College’s nursing and orthopedic programs.

The daytime clinic will be an urgent care center for college students, employees, and members of the surrounding community. Operated by the hospital and staffed with nurse practitioners and physician assistants, the facility will also be a prime location for health care students to get hands-on experience without leaving campus.

The agreement comes at a critical time. Staffing shortages have constricted health care in the Palmetto State since even before the recent pandemic. This is especially pronounced in the field of nursing, in which South Carolina has one of the country’s largest gaps, according to the Bureau of Health Workforce. South Carolina is positioned to experience the highest growth in nursing opportunities by 2030, according to the bureau. Experts anticipate 26,600 new jobs on top of an existing workforce of 36,900. Thanks to this partnership, Newberry College will be equipped to help meet this vital demand better than ever before.

In July, plans were finalized to name the new facility for key supporters R. Gordon ’61 and Anne Darby, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Gordon Darby founded Darby Development Company in 1968, which has built and sold homes and now manages multi-family residences in the Lowcountry. Darby has also been a member of the Newberry College Board of Trustees.

Athletic Stadium Phase II

The house the Wolves (will have) built

Though the second phase of renovations to the athletic stadium is underway, Wolves student-athletes are already protecting their up-and-coming den.

The phase will bring an 18,000-square-foot athletic field house, including locker rooms for football, lacrosse and field hockey, coaches’ offices, field-view classrooms and reception areas. The project will also include new spectator seating on the east side of the stadium.

Marissa Plumer is a senior from Kent Island, Maryland, who plays field hockey in the fall and women’s lacrosse in the spring. She represented her fellow student-athletes at the phase’s groundbreaking on March 12, 2022.

“Throughout my years here, I have felt unconditional support throughout the campus and City of Newberry. This is my home away from home. We are Wolves, and Wolves are territorial of our home and protect our family. Having our own space, right here at Setzler Field, where we practice every day, will be game changing for our team. This addition will expand our home and give us something new to protect.

“Just knowing that through a pandemic it was possible for people to continue to put us first and give us all the resources to be successful – from a brand-new weight room to new locker rooms and more – is exciting.”

As of August 2022, the field house will bear the name of Founders Federal Credit Union. The Lancaster, South Carolina-based firm has entered into a monumental partnership to provide much-needed on-campus financial services for students, alumni, faculty and staff. This agreement will not only change the ways families do business at Newberry College. It will have significant impacts on the future of the institution and Wolves Athletics, as well.

Scaling the Summit Campaign

“I am honored to be able to speak to you all about the impacts this project will have on student athletes like me,” she said. “My team had a shared locker room with soccer and volleyball my freshman and sophomore years. We were thankful to at least have something, however it doesn’t compare to having your own.

You will receive a tax deduction based on the value of the security on the date of the gift. 3 INSURANCE

A new or old insurance policy may be an appropriate way to make a gift to Newberry College for future endowment opportunities. Gifts of insurance will not be accepted for capital or current programming needs. Only permanent life insurance policies, i.e. whole life or universal life, are accepted as gifts. You can fund a new policy naming Newberry College as your beneficiary, or you can name Newberry College as beneficiary of an existing policy. For each policy, provisions must be made to cover future premium payments. If you transfer ownership of the policy to Newberry College, all future premium payments are tax-deductible. Real estate gifts may increase your income if they are structured through a life income gift. You may also deed property, including vacation homes, to Newberry while retaining the lifetime right to occupy the property. Gifts of real estate must meet certain criteria and be approved by Newberry College’s Board of Trustees.
