Little Falls Farmers Market Opens With Largest Crowd For Its Fourth Season

“Bigger and Better” is this year’s theme for The Little Falls Farmers Market, which kicked of the start of the season on May 21. Mayor James Damiano and members of the Township Council held a ribbon-cutting for the opening celebration.

Now in its fourth season, the market aims to support local growers and food producers. It will be held every Sunday, rain or shine, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Oct. 29 at the Little Falls Municipal Building parking lot, located at 225 Main Street.

Damiano invites everyone to come by visit the market, which will have a variety of offerings this season.

“We have an incredible assortment of vendors this year,” he said.

Michele Kocotos, Market Manager, echoed the sentiment and said the first day quickly proved that the outlook for the season really is bigger and better.

“We’ve broken last year’s foot traffic to kickoff of the new season and have several new vendors,” she said. “I’m loving the fact that people are coming to Shierferstein Farms, a new vendor, saying their prices are comparable if not cheaper than the local supermarkets. They’re also loving the great selection here.”

Schieferstein Farms is the produce vendor this season and has served Clark and the surrounding communities for over a century. The family-owned and operated

small, local business offers “Jersey Fresh” produce, with fruits and vegetables that were picked as recently as the day before.

Kocotos said many new vendors quickly saw a demand for their items, such as G.E.T. Doggie Treats & Sweets, which sold out with almost an hour left for the first Sunday. She added that The Cheese Guy and The Joyful Bubble Waffle quickly experienced a line for items“I was over at both these vendors and it’s delicious,” she explained. “I keep receiving texts about how delicious the food is and am getting raves about our food trucks. We’ve blown through last year’s high numbers already.”

According to Kocotos, lots of exciting activities and events are also planned for the market every week throughout the season, which includes a 20-foot slide for the “Slide into Summer” celebration, where attendees can slide as many times as they like.

A dance performance by dancers from Fred Astaire Dance Studios in Montclair is scheduled for June 4, including a visit from Hunter Hayes, noted jazz musician of Montclair, who will also be performing.

Additionally, Bach to Rock in Wayne will be presenting a performance from their students over the summer.

“While they’re here, parents can register their children to come the following week for a free 10-minute music lesson,” she noted.

Mo & Jay Pastry Shop will be holding their cupcake decorating contest. The local Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts will also be on-hand on separate weekends. Coming up in July, there will also be author readings from several local authors who have published books.

The market will also offer free blood pressure screening for the first Sunday of every month through October.

“Every weekend is something new, something different,” Kocotos added. “All I can say to patrons is to keep coming back!”

Kocotos also invited those inquiring about the market to visit and follow the Little Falls Farmers Market on Facebook every Friday at 4 p.m. for all upcoming events for that Sunday. Kocotos will also hold interviews in her “Talking Farmers Market” every Friday at 4 p.m. to be featured on the page.

“We’ll have the market’s founders to interview this Friday and I’m very excited about it,” she said.

Erin Chazotte, is owner of Woodlawn Refills, a zerowaste refill business for personal care and household cleaning products with the goal of stopping the cycle of

plastic use. She commented about participating in the market for the very time..

“I did an event with Little Falls a few years ago and what I love most about it is how involved the council members are. They really work hard to make it great for the vendors and great for the community,” she said. “It’s just an all around great event.”

Local resident Maria Doland visited the market and brought along her son Aiden.

“There’s a lot of selection here and plenty of things to choose from, including many new items,” she said. “I think today’s opening was wonderful and we really enjoyed it.”

Councilwoman Christine Hablitz said she was happy to see the market growing

every year.

“This is definitely the highest foot traffic we’ve had and we’re very excited for this season,” she said.

New Jersey NASCAR Driver Keeps Dream Alive Through Realistic Expectations

When thinking of the state of New Jersey, regular enthusiasts of automobile racing may instantly think of the local short tracks. The paved facilities of Old Bridge Township and Wall Stadium, and the dirt facilities of Bridgeport and New Egypt. Other enthusiasts may think of the New Jersey Motorsports Park road course, or the recognizable sport heroes of Dallenbach, Evernham, and Truex.

Stephen Mallozzi’s journey has been emotionally based. A member of Generation Z, it was being able to name car brands, collect die-cast cars, and the art of video games that introduced him to the sport he loves so much. Becoming a competitor, Mallozi took up karting with hopes to one day enter the foray of stock car racing.

Sounds to be the perfect plot for a sports movie from Walt Disney Pictures. Yet Mallozzi’s focus on the little things is what keeps him grounded. A focus on spending time with his inspired Mallozzi to put his racing dreams on hold. His father was battling Stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer, and Mallozzi was unsure how much time his father would have left. As a result, Mallozzi walked away from the sport he loved so much. He switched his focus to commentary, eventually working for the ACC Network for a while, while also becoming a writer for tobychristie.com. Yet as his father overcame his illness, Mallozzi realized that his athletic mindset on automobile racing is what kept him going, and what he needed to continue to strive for.

Mallozzi made his way to North Carolina. While focused on his dream and his fire reignited, he remembered to keep his expectations realistic. Was there a path to make that dream a reality? After making a few starts in late-model racing, Mallozzi was able to obtain a license to compete in NASCAR. Becoming a developmental driver for Reame Brothers Racing, Mallozzi was able to make his NASCAR-sanctioned debut in what is now known as the Craftsman Truck Series. That experience at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course was what led to another opportunity this past April in the Long John Silver’s 200 at Martinsville Speedway. Driving back to Charlottesville after the 200’s rain-delayed conclusion, he was serving tables at the local Outback Steakhouse the following afternoon. He sold his truck just so he was able to make the trip to Madison, Illinois to compete at

World Wide Technology Raceway this past month — utilizing the power of social media to continue to make his dream possible and attain financial backing.

Mallozzi is currently licensed to compete at NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series-sanctioned events at oval facilities 1.25 miles and under. Now having competed at World Wide Technology Raceway this past month, Mallozzi hopes to be approved to compete at sanctioned facilities 1.5 miles and greater. coming events at Richmond Raceway, Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, and the Milwaukee Mile. While he would have the exposure, the length of those facilities would not help in Mallozzi’s desire for full approval to compete in the league.

“The Goal is…to find (the team and myself) at a Pocono or a Kansas, and then, hopefully, get approved to do Talladega and Daytona.”

Mallozzi continues to live out his dream. His way, with realistic expectations. As Mallozzi prepares for law school in the coming months, he knows that if he wants to convert this dream into a full-time gig, the time to go is now. For the sport of stock car racing, Charlotte, North Carolina is the central hub. With a focus on the primary and second-generation athletes in Busch, Hamlin, Elliott, and Dillon among others, the Cinderella stories of Bayne and Fedewa are often overlooked when focusing on the next generation of competitors. The recent eighth annual Families Behind the Badge was a great success.

Fourteen teams of North Jersey law enforcement officers and first responders battled it out for the title, which was won this year by the NJ State Police. Runner-up was the Hudson County Corrections Dept. The tournament honors officers that have given their lives in the line of duty and their families and raises funds to assist those surviving families via the State PBA Survivors Fund.

Over $15,000 was raised at the event, which will be given to the NJ State PBA Survivors Fund and the family of the late Capt. Jeff O’Brien of the Woodland Park Police Department. A 23-year member of

the WPPD, Capt. O’Brien passed away on Nov. 21, 2022, after an eight-year battle with brain cancer.

“Today standing up here feels a little surreal…honoring one of my officers,” said WPPD Chief John Uzzalino. “Jeff was a very knowledgeable police officer, was very well respected, and will be deeply missed by those he touched.”

Participating teams included the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Passaic County Sheriff’s Dept., Elmwood Park PD, North Arlington PD, Hudson County Corrections Dept., Clifton PD, NJ State Police, Woodland Park PD, Montclair PD, Little Falls PD, Passaic PD, Paterson PD, Bloomfield PD, and the West Paterson Fire Department.

Students at Memorial Middle School have volunteered many times over the years to assist at functions held for the Woodland Park Seniors at the WP Boys & Girls Club.

In an effort to give back, the senior club presents an annual essay contest for District eight graders. This is the second year the contest has been held. Monies for the awards were collected from club members throughout the year at club meetings.

The theme for 2023 was: “The impossible need not become an impossibility.” Interested students were to submit an essay of 500 words or less on the topic and the essays were reviewed by a committee of four retired teachers who are members of the senior group.

At a recent club meeting, the students were saluted for their submissions and the winners were announced.

Students who were awarded $100 prizes were: Alexander De Santis, Merieka Corpuz, and Jordyn Jacobs-Lee. Each of these students shared their essays with the group. Students who were awarded $50 were Jalal Elnatshe and Thiago Rodriguez.

The club also recognized the following students for their participation: Monier Issa, Anthony Hathout, Omar Deep, Joaquin Vila, Onur Sozer, Ilyanna Shanaa, Isabella Molina, Lazar Mastalkov, Sofia Perillo, Jordin Campbell, Jayden Byles, and Joanie Mupo. Each of these students received $10 and a certificate.

Just Ruck

Woodland Park American Legion Post 238 and Little Falls Post 108 held their annual “Just Ruck It” event, marching through the two towns to visit elderly veterans who have a hard time getting out, survivors of veterans who have passed, and to remember the sacrifices of Passaic county service members who lost their lives in defense of our country. The ruckers also show respect and

appreciation for the men who came before them and read the biographies of soldiers killed in action at the streets which bear street signs in their names. It’s a commitment to the continued telling of their stories so that their sacrifices will not be forgotten.

One of the other stops the ruckers made was at the Little Falls Recreation Complex where the veterans handed out flags to kids.

Members of the Memorial Middle School Climate & Culture Committee spent some time with members of the Woodland Park Seniors, providing technical help and offering a bevy of useful tips for their devices. They also played an online Kahoot trivia game on their phones and enjoyed lunch.

Pain is a warning sign that something is wrong. Serious injury risk escalates significantly if you continue hiking in pain. Beginner level hikers should take on less difficult trails until they become better conditioned and more confident.

Evaluation by a foot and ankle surgeon is recommended if there is persistent pain following a hiking or hunting outing. The biggest concern is usually ankle instability and strained Achilles tendons. Inattention to these problems at their early stages may lead to a serious

injury that will keep you off the trails for a long time.

2023 Essex County SummerMusic Concert Series to Take Center Stage in the Historic Essex County Parks System

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. Invites Public to Experience Spectacular Fireworks and the Hottest Acts in Jazz, Doo Wop, Rock and Roll, Reggae, Latin and More

Essex County, NJ – Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. invites the public to attend the “2023 Essex County Free SummerMusic Concert Series.” The free concert series brings a diverse group of musicians and entertainers to perform at locations throughout the historic Essex County Park System and provides residents with an evening leisure activity to enjoy the parks.

This year’s series features three concert and fireworks spectaculars, five concerts in Brookdale Park, 12 concerts throughout the county, and four cultural festivals.

“The Essex County Free Summer Music Concert Series offers a diverse lineup of performers who will take center stage throughout our historic Parks System. Pack a blanket, enjoy the cool evening breeze, and dance to the sounds of classical, rock and roll, jazz, big band, Latin and more. We have an amazing line-up that is sure to entertain and impress,” DiVincenzo said.

The SummerMusic Concert Series is being sponsored by Rose Squared Productions and The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey. The series is also made possible, in part, by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State.

Over the course of 12 weeks this summer, there are 24 different events featuring some of the best local and international acts in jazz, rock and roll, big band, reggae and more. The 2023 SummerMusic Concert Series began

Tuesday, June 20, with a concert by Jersey Sound in Essex County Yanticaw Park in Nutley and concludes on Saturday, August 26 and 27, with a two-day Latino Festival in Essex County Monte Irvin Orange Park in Orange.

Michael Kahwaty Donates Hair to Charity

Michael Kahwaty, an eighth grade student at School No. 1, finally decided to cut his hair!

The 13-year-old, who hasn’t had a real haircut since 2017, decided to donate his locks to charity. He came up with the idea for the fundraiser as a National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) service project.

“I’m donating my hair to ‘Wigs for Kids,’ a nonprofit organization that makes hairpieces for children who lost their hair due to medical reasons,” Michael said, adding that all proceeds from the event and from his online fundraising page will go to the NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center. “They treated my grandmother for ten years until she passed in 2008.”

The event took place in School 1’s APR on June 6. Tickets were sold prior to his haircut during the school day for a $5 donation, and a QR code on a flier that was previously distributed linked to the donation page.

With his fellow schoolmates, school staff, and family members on-hand for support, Michael received a stylish haircut from Gina Fernicola of Envy The Style Salon. Along with her daughter Angela who assisted, they cut approximately fourteen inches off his hair. He commented on how he felt afterwards.

“It feels so much lighter,” he quipped. “And it feels great to donate my hair.”

School No.1 Principal Dana Sprague said she is very proud of Michael for wanting to help the charities. She felt that coming up with the idea shows his dedication not only to the NJHS service project venture but also in donating his hair to children in need.

“I think taking part in something like this is totally honorable and shows his commitment to his NJHS service project venture,” she said. “I know it wasn’t easy to have all his peers here at this age level, so it’s something a lot of kids might think twice about...but he did not. He looks amazing and I’m really proud of him.”

Michael’s mother, Anne Kahwaty, said Michael came up with the idea himself as an NJHS service project.

“He wanted to pick something personal, but also help an organization, so he researched a couple of organizations that make wigs for children,” she explained. “He decided on ‘Wigs for Kids’ because they don’t charge the children for the wigs.”

Al Kahwaty, Michael’s father, added, “Michael has always been recognized for his long hair. By choosing to give that up for children who need it more than he does, and by honoring his grandmother who he never

Michael has so far raised over $1100 online for the NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center where his grandmother was treated.

“We just want to thank everybody here at School 1, including Ms. Marinelli, Ms. Sprague, all his teachers and classmates who came out to support Michael,” his mother noted. “It was a such good thing to do and I’m really proud of him.”

Michael is excited to be attending Passaic

Valley High School this fall as a freshman and plans to take part in the soccer program. He thanked several people after the event.

“I’d like to thank Ms. Fernicola for coming out here today to cut my hair, including Ms. Sprague and Mrs. Marinelli for supporting me with this idea,” he said. “I’d like to also thank my parents who encouraged and supported me throughout this whole event and idea.”

Little Falls Holds Annual Memorial Parade and Memorial Park Ceremony

The Township held its annual Memorial Day Parade and Memorial Day services on May 28, with a special tribute to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

The parade, consisting of veterans, elected officials, and Township organizations, traveled on Main Street from the American Legion Post 108 building to Memorial Park on Wilmore Road, where officials and residents came together in remembrance.

Mayor James Damiano took part in the parade and ceremony, along with Council President Anthony Sgobba, Councilman Chris Vancheri, Councilwoman Christine Hablitz, Councilman Michael Murphy and Councilwoman Jayna Patel.

Damiano spoke to attendees of the importance of reflecting on the sacrifices made by those who defend the U.S. and to remember their family members as well.

“It’s important to remember not only those who put their lives on the line to give us the freedoms we have today, but also their families who selflessly supported their loved ones on the front lines,” he said.

American Legion NJ Post 108 Commander Herb Brychta, also emphasized the need to bring peace and closure to the families of those lost during service and who remain missing in action during past wars, adding that the mission continues to bring their remains back home.

The Friends of the Alfred Baumann Library and the Alfred Library staff wore yellow shirts with a construction theme in the Memorial Day parade to kick off its moving campaign. What causes a Callus

Acallus is the build-up of extra skin on the bottom of the foot. Many calluses can cause pain, but not all of them. Some people notice a burning sensation when a fair amount of callus has formed.

The two most common places for calluses on the ball of the foot are under the second and fifth toes. When a callus forms, it means there’s an unusually high pressure point or friction in this area. The pressure point or friction is most often caused by a combination of your foot structure and how your foot moves.

People with flat feet, normal arches, or high arches can develop calluses. Sometimes, ill-fitting shoes can be the culprits. Some people develop a high pressure point because they’re compensating for pain in their knee, hip, or back.

Home care of a callus should NEVER consist of using a sharp implement. Using a pumice stone and moisturizing cream are both perfectly safe.

Also, make sure your shoe size is accurate. Don’t assume that your foot size hasn’t changed. Shoes that are too big or too tight can lead to the formation of calluses.

Little Falls Raises Pride Flag During Fourth Annual Ceremony

The Township held its fourth annual flag raising ceremony in honor of Pride Month in front of the Little Falls Municipal Building on June 1.

Pride Month is designated for the entire month of June in support of LGBTQIA+ rights, with celebrations and remembrances in cities and towns across the nation.

The ceremony was hosted by Councilman Chris Vancheri, who welcomed attendees and gave special homage to the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York City. The incident took place on June 28, 1969, when the Stonewall Inn, a gay club, was raided by New York City police. It sparked protests and is considered by many to have lead to the modern day fight for LGBTQIA+ rights in the U.S.

On-hand for the ceremony was Mayor James Damiano who held

a proclamation, along with Council President Anthony Sgobba and Councilwoman Jayna Patel. Also in attendance was Police Chief Bryan Prall of the Little Falls Police Department (LFPD) and LT. Dawn Gilchrist, who is the LGBTQIA+ police liaison officer of the LFPD. Several members of the LFPD were also present.

Gilchrist spoke of the continued fight for rights and acceptance in the LGBTQIA+ community, emphasizing that approximately 500 bills this year have been introduced in Congress that can negatively impact the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. She said that in spite of this, the number of LGBTQIA+ police liaison officers has risen to 117 statewide. She commended Mayor Damiano and the Township Council, including the community for their continued support.

“This group works tirelessly for representation to the community,” she

explained. “This is not just a triumph to raise this flag, but it’s also a reminder of the barriers that our community still faces today.

I’m very proud to work for a community that is committed to the inclusion of all of its members and want to thank the Mayor and council members for raising this flag and for their

support.”

During his Mayor’s proclamation designating June 2023 as LGBTQIA+ Pride Month in the Township, Damiano referred to the Declaration of Independence, stating that the U.S. was founded on the principles that all people are created equal and that “each person shall be afforded the

equal protection of the law.”

“The LGBTQIA+ community has made great strides forward in equality, inclusion and acceptance, but that it has not been fully achieved,” he added. “We must practice these values and teach them to future generations.”

Damiano also discussed the anniversary of the Stonewall riots and the birth of the Pride celebrations. He spoke of the importance of commemorating the event and to continue the efforts to demand equal rights for the LGBTQIA+ community, not only during Pride Month, but every month. He also shared how he felt discriminated against for being a supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community during certain times in the past.

“I certainly felt I was being discriminated against because I raised this flag, and for me it was just moments so I cannot even imagine how those in the LGBTQIA+ community have

felt for their entire lives,” he noted. “For decades and for generations they’ve been discriminated against.”

Damiano reaffirmed his support for everyone in the community, adding that to celebrate “Pride” there must be a continued effort to demand equal rights for all.

“I stand beside you in your fight for equality,” he further added. “We love you, and we’re here to fight for you and bring equality for you.”

Vancheri closed the ceremony with a quote from the first openly gay elected official to take office, Harvey Milk.

“He said, ‘It takes no compromise to give people their rights, it takes no money to respect the individual, it takes no political deal to give people freedom, it takes no survey to remove repression,’” Vancheri noted. “’Hope will never be silent.’”

Saxophonist Hunter Hayes Performs at Little Falls Farmers Market

Renowned Emmy Award-winning singer, composer and saxophone player, Hunter Hayes, was featured at the Little Falls Farmers Market on June 4.

Hayes wowed the crowd with his performance of song renditions, including some of his original songs.

A Montclair native who is now a resident of Little Falls, Hayes has been playing his saxophone for almost 55 years. He said he was thrilled to be asked to perform at the Little Falls Farmers Market

“Montclair is my hometown but when Little Falls called me to ask me to come and play for the Farmers Market, I said definitely!” Hayes explained.

Hayes is set to return to the Little Falls Farmers Market for another performance on July 9 and is looking forward to playing to the crowd once again this summer.

I love this town,” he added. “I got married 16 years ago and my wife Gloria

brought me here, so I never left Little Falls. People are wonderful and they’ve been coming up to shake my hand after I’ve played for them. It’s a beautiful town.”

On his rendition hit list were songs “Sweet Caroline,” “My Girl, “and “I Heard It Through The Grapevine.”

“I played some Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Gladys Night & The Pips and we really had a good time,” he said. “People were partying with me here. Fred Astaire Dance Studios came over as well. It was really fun!”

Michele Kocotos, Market Manager, said Hayes made the vibe at the Farmers Market peaceful for a Sunday afternoon.
