The SEMA show has come and gone once again, and as such, we’ve got a truckload of content to sift through in the following pages. As we bid farewell to 2019 and venture into the unknown waters of 2020, the 2019 SEMA show serves as a look back through the trends and iconic builds of the past year. As you can imagine, this issue will focus primarily on the 2019 SEMA show, featuring new products that were showcased on the show floor, the show’s most awe-inspiring builds, and everything in between that made the show so special. The Toyota Supra is well represented here, as there were roughly 50 of them on the show floor this year. So many that we put together an entire article on the A90 Supras of SEMA 2019. We compiled a wide range of SEMA coverage like the overall show coverage, the Editor’s Top 10 SEMA Cars, and so much more that you’ll discover within these pages. The 7th annual Tuner Battlegrounds Championship hit the show floor this year, bringing Kalvin Malli's 1990 Nissan 300ZX and Anthony Do’s 1993 Nissan 240sx head to head for the duration of the show, and we’ve got it all right here! We also talked with Mitchell of Button Built to get an idea of what it takes to build a custom widebody Ferrari to Toyo Tires Treadpass standards for the big show, and he walks us through the process from conception to execution in one of our most impressive SEMA features to date. SAILUN TIRE PROVES THEIR PROWESS IN AUTOCROSS

SAILUN TIRE

is a brand which has established itself as a reliable, quality product that remains friendly to tight budgets in the “value tier” of tires. Despite their lower price point, the company remains adamant that their safety, quality, and support doesn’t falter, and they recently gave our editor, as well as numerous other media outlets and tire suppliers, the chance to experience it for themselves. Outside of Road Atlanta on an autocross course, we were given the chance to test Sailun’s Inspire Touring tire on a Chevrolet Impala, and their Terramax HLT on a BMW X3. The custom autocross course consisted of hard corners, wet patches, emergency stops in both the dry and wet, and ample opportunity to test the limits of the tires. The catch? There were two of each test car - one with Sailun’s tires, and one with a direct competitor’s tire, but with both

tires unmarked, making it a completely blind test. Once we took a couple laps in each car, we were asked to rate the tires using a variety of metrics, evaluating cornering ability, grip, performance in the wet, braking, etc. When we saw the results, the entire test group was amazed. Despite a 30-40% savings in cost between Sailun’s tires and the competitor’s tires, the two sets of tires scored almost the same across every measurable evaluation, including performance in the wet, and the Sailun tires were better in multiple cases. Perhaps most interesting was the fact that the Sailun tires, once we learned which was which, appeared to hold more of their tread life by the end of the testing session. Sailun is not messing around, and they’re here to stay in the value tier of aftermarket tires. Don’t count them out the next time you go tire shopping!

The Formula Drift press conference at SEMA is one of our favorite moments of the show each year. In addition to giving us a chance to catch up with our favorite drivers in person, we also get our first look at the coming year’s schedule of events. This time around, we were treated to a few surprises for the 2020 schedule looking forward.

FORMULA DRIFT 2020 SCHEDULE

ne of the first changes is the switch-up between Atlanta and Orlando rounds, moving Atlanta to the second round, and Orlando down to the third round. For the fourth competition event round, we get another change as the New Jersey round is moving from Wall Speedway to the legendary Englishtown Raceway Park, which has recently begun the process of converting its famous NHRA drag strip into a floodlit drift arena! This is great news for the future of the sport in America! The last big change in the Formula Drift calendar comes for round 7, in which the Texas stop from previous years has been replaced by a return to Sonoma Raceway in Northern California, an area which has seen a massive boost in drifting popularity since the last time Formula Drift was at the venue. Thanks to a multi-year deal, the Sonoma Raceway stop will be a staple for years to come. See you out there!

Founded in 1994, Ezerioha started the company to continue testing and developing engine projects. efore it was a worldwide phenomenon of automotive events, the name Clean Culture was that of a prestigious car club, but they prefer to call themselves a family. Now an expansive event brand as well as their own club, the brand is well represented across all state lines, and you can always expect a convoy of “Clean Culture” banners coming to events near you. Clean Culture was formed in 2014 with one goal in mind: bringing enthusiasts of all car backgrounds together. Originally from New York, owners Nick Terzo and George Melita would attend local car gatherings only to see many different groups stick to themselves. They sought to have everyone in one place and mingle together regardless of vehicle preference. The gatherings were hosted out of pure passion, and eventually grew to a level in which they needed to be legitimized to continue, hence the need to form a brand that represented the ideals. The first event was hosted in 2014 in Dutchess, New York, and a large part of its success was due to a family of tight knit supporters. This group was coined as the CC Fam (Clean Culture Fam). As they continued to expand outwards to other states, they started new families or chapters based on new locations with the same ideals as back home in New York. The two owners eventually moved to Florida and Los Angeles to expand even further, which helped the brand spread rapidly. They’re now hosting over 30 events throughout the country, a Japan event in 2020, and have over 500 members total.

very year it seems like the next SEMA show is starting right when the last one ended, and this year really proved it. It felt like we had just put out last year’s SEMA issue when we started laying the groundwork for 2019, and before we knew it, we were Vegas-bound again. With several years of SEMA attendance under the belt, things like hydration, nourishment, and pace were all top of mind as the show began - tactics derived from lessons learned in previous years, no doubt. Last year was the first time we made written note of the increased truck and powersports presence, and that segment seems to have grown yet again this year, taking up the majority of outdoor spots on both sides of the building. The quality of SEMA cars continues to rise as companies strive to make their booth presence known with top-shelf builds, and many builders and brands have taken to using SEMA as their debut stage for builds which remained under wraps during the process.

The Blue Lot, often the first part of the show you’ll see on the way in due to its proximity to many load-in entrances, is a bit of a mixed bag as far as its contents go. These feature vehicle spots are filled by cars and trucks which may not be inside the halls representing for a booth, but certainly achieve SEMA car status. Just like last year, the increased presence of “Cen-Cal” style trucks took up half of the lot, but the rest of it featured some truly unique cars and hot-rods. One especially nice part of this section is the variety of well built street cars you’ll find in and around the Blue Lot. For many of our audience members, it’s street car or no car.

silver The proverbial “circus of SEMA,” the Silver Lots have become the primary attraction for thrill-seekers attending the SEMA show over the past few years. With “Ford Out Front” continuing its reign of chaos in the middle of the outdoors section, and Hoonigan returning with another burn yard bash for the second consecutive year, there was never a shortage of high-octane action in the Silver Lots. There is truly something for every enthusiast out here - from real life Hot Wheels cars in full size, to tricked out supercars and everything in between. As you may have noticed, there was a massive presence of large trucks out here as well, presumably too large to fit through the convention center doors. One of our favorite vehicles out here was River City Rods & Fabrications’ “Brown Sugar,” a custom Chevy pickup camper RV with ‘70s style and a completely reimagined interior - the ultimate road trip vehicle!

CENTRAL

When you finally make your way inside the Las Vegas Convention Center, your indoor journey is likely to start at Central Hall. This is where you’ll find the OEM manufacturers like Chevrolet, Ford, Toyota, and Honda showing off their latest and greatest, as well as some of the biggest aftermarket brands in the industry - this hall is for the heavy hitters. Even the main lobby halls before you reach the inside of Central Hall are packed with cool stuff on pedestals between every food stop. This hall is where we make our stay with our Tuner Battlegrounds finalists. Being the biggest hall at the show, brands do everything in their power to bring you in to their booth, so you can expect serious show-stoppers here. There’s a little bit of everything scattered throughout the Central Hall, from hot rods and resto-mod classics to world debut widebody imports and never before seen custom cars and trucks.

WHEEL & TIRE

In the world of wheels and tires, it pays to stand out from the crowd, and presentation is everything. This means that brands looking to stand out among the SEMA crowd are doing everything they can to present their products in a meaningful way, especially when it comes to wheels. One immediate stand-out in the Wheel & Tire Hall was the Kansei Wheels booth. This is a brand that’s relatively new on the scene, and is exhibiting at SEMA for the second time. Their branded backdrop did well to showcase their booth car, a Toyota Cressida with a Mark II front end conversion, sporting their newest wheel offering. Our friends at Konig wheels made sure to cover all the bases with a new Supra, a Mk4 Supra, and a Tesla for good measure. There was no shortage of the new Supra down here, as it seemed to be the chassis of choice to showcase new wheel designs this year.

The Toyo Tires Treadpass has become synonymous with impeccable build quality. For us, this exhibit nestled between the Central and South halls is the highlight of the show every year, and this year was certainly no different. One requirement of showcasing your car here is a near complete embargo on releasing build information and images. Every vehicle you see in the Toyo Treadpass is a debut build, unknown to the public before the show opens, and there is just so much quality here it’s hard to take a properly close look at all of it. Bisimoto’s latest bonkers Porsche build, ButtonBuilt’s new custom widebody Ferrari, a widebody AE86, and one of the most built A90 Supras of the entire show are just a small sample of what you’ll find here. Among the rest of the spectacular builds in the tent, five of these vehicles made it to the PASMAG Editor’s Top 10 cars of SEMA 2019 - a testament to the overall quality that Toyo Tires expects from their Treadpass each year.

For the first time in all the years I’ve attended SEMA, this was the first year I didn’t make it over to Ignited. After a long week of running around, meeting clients and contributors, and attending after-hours events, I was spent, and with our flight out the same night I made the responsible decision to let our contributors handle this one. Micah Russell, AKA Spokephotos, was with us for his first SEMA ever, so we sent him over for a surprise. He walked over to Ignited not knowing what he was walking into. His account of events is below: “After signing a form I assume was a waiver, over the sound of screaming drag cars and crowds, I threw on a given numbered vest and walked into a long row of media personnel, a k-wall, and the stands full of spectators. Looking at the Nitro Circus ramp, I began to switch lenses and alter settings on camera, not understanding what I was about to witness. After they handed out the Young Builders award, a bearded man came out and briefly told everyone what Nitro Circus was. Then it hit me - there's going to be bike stunts! I had only seen this on YouTube and TV, but never in person before. I've never shot bikes doing airborne stunts at night. I thought this was going to be a drift session. Watching the riders perform their stunts was unbelievable to see in person. The flips, tail whips, no handers, and endless insane tricks at the Nitro Circus were amplified by pyrotechnics. After the bikes were finished, they brought out the massive drift truck. There was as much diesel smoke as there was tire smoke, and it was awe-inspiring how much control he had over that truck.

To complete the night, Formula Drift drivers came out and put on a spectacular show with wall taps, flames, and enough tire shreds to turn a white shirt black. With every pass we had to duck down so we wouldn't get hit with bits of rubber. The amount of smoke they were producing made the crowd in the stands disperse. All the drivers did some tandem and single runs. After shooting and watching this particular event, nothing could have been a better way to complete my week at SEMA.� Knowing our contributors enjoyed their time at an event even more than we did is just the icing on the cake that is a huge week at SEMA. As we boarded our respective plans back to our home destinations, the weight lifted off our shoulders knowing we had done it - another SEMA in the books. Until next year!

or the 2019 Championship, you chose Anthony Do’s 1993 Nissan 240sx S13.5 and Kalvin Malli’s 1990 Nissan 300zx as your finalists to do battle for the title of the Tuner Battlegrounds Champion of 2019! Do’s 240sx is a full build from top to bottom with nothing left untouched - including the entire front end, which has been converted to an S15 front end outfitted with a combination of S13 and S15 Rocket Bunny kits and air suspension. Malli’s 300zx is more on the subtle side, featuring a stock body with some periodcorrect exterior mods and a KBD front bumper. Each one has a ton of charm and looked right at home on the SEMA floor. A common thread between the two 1990s Nissans was in the engine bay. Both Nissans were powered by single-turbo 2JZ engines! Because of their dedication to quality work inside and out, and the ability to light up the tires at the drop of a hat, both cars and their owners have amassed sizeable followings, which made for a tight battle all the way to the end. As you might imagine, Tuner Battlegrounds’ competitive nature can cause tempers to flare, but both of these guys stayed true to the spirit of the competition and became friends during their time battling it out at SEMA. For the second year running, we also utilized the PASMAG Editor’s Challenges

to keep these two busy during their time at SEMA, visiting key SEMA landmarks, partners, and personnel for chances to score extra votes towards their totals. With the online votes counted, hashtags tallied up, and the math done on the Editor’s Challenges, the winner achieved a vote total of 2,792 votes. Your Tuner Battlegrounds 2019 Champion is Kalvin Malli and his 1990 Nissan 300zx. Malli comes home with the Tuner Battlegrounds 2019 Championship award, a PASMAG cover feature, and the experience of having proved himself on the SEMA show floor alongside the best in the industry. Do will also show up in his own PASMAG feature later this year as well, so stay tuned for a breakdown on both of these impressive 2J-swapped builds. For us here at PASMAG, the dust never really settles, as Tuner Battlegrounds is a 365-day-a-year thing now with TBG Live, and we’re already putting gears in motion for the 2020 season. SEMA 2019 was a wild ride from start to finish. Between meetings and coverage, we managed to find some time to nail down the Editor's Top 10 cars of the 2019 SEMA show, but it wasn't easy! Since I have an affinity for old Japanese cars and Porsches, you know there is going to be a proper representation of both, but there are some wildcard choices in the Top 10 this year that might surprise you. Let's jump right into it.

Some of our audience may recognize Daniel Wu from AMC's hit TV series, Into The Badlands, but here at PASMAG we also recognize him for building cool Japanese classics. A few SEMA shows ago, we shot his beautiful Datsun 510, and this year he returned with another instant favorite, his 1968 Honda S800. It was already one of the most unique cars at the show, but his story behind the build made it all the more special. Wu loves to attach a story to his builds before they begin, so this time around he named the S800 “The Chinpira,” which means “low level gangster” in Japanese. The idea was to build the car through the eyes of an entry-level street gangster of the late 60s. This led to a stunning red interior, some creative body work thanks to Kei Miura, and the decision to use the stock engine and rebuilt and widened stock steel wheels which were painted to match the theme.

Bringing a Hakosuka to SEMA is a sure-fire way to catch my attention. While this build may not have had all the interior fit and finish of the usual wild SEMA builds from the Toyo Tires Treadpass, the fact that this 2JZpowered Hako was converted to LHD made it an instant favorite for me. A left-hand drive Hako is the ultimate dream. The 2JZ is just icing on the cake.

Breaking into the aftermarket wheel industry is no easy task, but with the help of some really great demo cars, Kansei Wheels is doing it right. This year they showcased their newest wheels on a Toyota Cressida with a Mark II front end conversion, which included custom modified fenders. Under the hood is a 1JZ that remains mostly stock, which helps keep the Toyota reliable for more seat time while drifting. Four doors, low, and frequently drifted are a recipe for a favorite in my books.

Here's one you don't see every day, and likely won't see ever again. What you're looking at is a 1966 Datsun Roadster with all sorts of cool work put into it. First up, you’ll notice the top half is gone. Creative bodywork in chopping the top off the car makes it a true roadster. Under the hood, a naturally aspirated SR20DE, outfitted with some super rare and now very pricey old-logo Nismo bits, matching the super rare steering wheel. Little details like one yellow SEV Marchal headlight and the single offset side mirror tie this build together nicely. There's a lot to love about this thing.

The term "luxury prerunner" is a new one for us, but we're happy TJ Russell of Russell Built Fabrication introduced us to this monster. It's a Porsche 911 built to the nines and ready for off-road rally action at the drop of a hat. Custom fabrication from front to back, which included a lengthened wheelbase and custom suspension components throughout, a big set of Fifteen52 wheels wrapped in large off-road tires, and a stunningly civil and polished interior all come together to make this Porsche truly one of a kind. The front trunk holds a full size spare and a spare axle, so you can enjoy rally racing with the peace of mind that everything is repairable on the go.

John Sarkisyan, A.K.A. @slang500, has made his way into the Editor's top choices every year for the past three years, and there's a damn good reason for it. Impeccable craftsmanship on two twin Porsche 550 Spyder kit cars is just the latest of his wild visions. One was built for his brother with a Type 4 VW bus engine in the rear and a center-position driver’s seat, and the other features a boosted 2-litre Subaru engine outfitted with tons of Chasing J's titanium pieces and an interior similar to his Mercedes Gullwing from last year. The details are everything on these builds.

This one is a little different from the usual choices. On the outside, it's a mostly stock C2 Corvette in beige. Nothing too special, right? That is, until you peek under the hood. Our friend Kyle Kuhnhausen, previously known to PASMAG for his incredible fabrication work on the "InZanity" Datsun, had his hand in fabricating all sorts of cool racecar goods for this unassuming Vette. An LT4 powerplant sits behind the front axles thanks to a pushed back firewall, and the car achieves a perfect 50/50 weight distribution. While tame on the outside, this C2 is a bonafide racecar, and is engineered to be serviceable, reliable, and to kick ass on the autocross course. Looking from the outside, you would never guess that half of the engine bay components are removable via quick-release for service, or that the whole car is built upon an Art Morrison chassis. Even the interior looks factory, but any C2 owner will be quick to notice that the entire back half of the cockpit is custom made and designed to look period correct. It's the perfect wolf in sheep's clothing.

I've been a sucker for the Porsche 944 as long as I can remember, and this one is different from every single one I've ever seen. With a widebody kit never before seen making its debut at SEMA 2019, an ITB-equipped LS3 engine, an Audi transmission, and all sorts of cool touches inside and out, this Porsche 944 is one of my absolute favorites of the show, even without the signature pop-up headlights we know and love. The interior was treated to a classy redesign that doesn’t overstep into supermodern and digital looks, and the widebody kit is so wonderfully aggressive when paired with the modular carbon fiber spoiler, big diffuser, and custom lights in the front and rear. Props to Widerstandsfahig for building one badass outlaw 944.

Where do I even start with this Porsche 930? Yes, there is a 930 under there. It's worth noting that this car was found in a barn with the racing body already attached, albeit with some old technology in the drivetrain. Owner Rod Chong took this car to Bisimoto to outfit it with the latest and greatest twin-turbo technology, peeking out under the rear bumper in Bisi's signature tell-tale style. Ornamental Conifer took care of some neat hand-painting for a truly one-off look, and the whole package came together so perfectly that it stopped our whole team in their tracks on our walk. With a lifetime of enthusiasm for drift culture, Chong ensured that some of the design cues and overall aura of drift cars made its way onto his 930, now dubbed “Project #935X.” Mismatched front and rear wheels, sticker-bombed seat backs, and a relatively simple interior design all translate well with this car. A bonafide racecar for the road in its purest form - there’s nothing I don’t love about this Porsche.

By now most of our audience is familiar with the F7LTHY name. Based in British Columbia, Canada, but with members all over the continent, the team has been pumping out stellar builds for years now. This year they got the chance to debut their latest build in the Toyo Tires Treadpass, an area of SEMA synonymous with impeccable quality. The Mercedes-Benz 190E you see here takes inspiration from the golden days of the chassis - DTM racing. The Evo2 kit was widened by three inches to make room for some big tires, which are tucked under the fenders by way of air suspension. Under the hood, a twin-turbocharged Texas Speed LS engine which makes an easy 1,000 horsepower, and is capable of up to 1,600. Inside, a beautifully reimagined red interior, complete with a F7LTHY-branded dash. This build features a little bit of everything the F7LTHY team is capable of, and it’s no surprise that it landed a spot in the prestigious Toyo Tires Treadpass.

Ultimate Auto was challenged to build the ultimate tuner-styled A90 Supra in just 20 days, and by all accounts they delivered with a glimpse into the future of the A90’s wild styling. A bright lime green exterior matches the large green Vossen wheels, and the blue underglow is the perfect match for the intricate and beautiful audio setup in the trunk. The Rocket Bunny kit was a must for this look.

90 F A E TH RAS O SUP A 2019 SEM In addition to the stock examples in Toyota’s booth, they also featured a handful of aftermarket builds from popular tuners, similar to their Scion Tuner Challenge from a few years ago.

Popular YouTube star, Stradman, had his Supra on display in the central lobby in his signature purple on white color scheme. The contrasting colors and deep dish wheels definitely set this example apart.

European Auto Group’s Supra may have fooled most passers-by with its stock and unassuming exterior, but it was one of the most exciting examples at SEMA. Take a peek inside the cabin and you’ll notice that the signature BMW automatic shifter is gone, and replaced with a manual! This modification by itself makes it one of our favorite Supras of the show.

Not one to be outdone by the rest of the show, Toyo Tires made sure their annual Treadpass exhibit featured one of the most heavily modified Mk5 Supras of the show. In just 45 days, this Supra was outfitted with a Pandem kit, a set of TE37 Ultra Track Edition 2 wheels, Cusco sway bars and bracing, KW V3 coilovers, and Toyo R888R tires. Inside the cockpit, Recaro Pro Racer RMS seats, and a cage from Studio RSR. Under the hood, a Pure700 turbo kit paired with an SSR Performance downpipe, a titanium exhaust, and a custom tune boost power to 672 whp and 625 lb-ft of torque.

One of the show’s most insane Mk5 Supras came courtesy of GReddy Performance Products and Ken Gushi. Just like most of the modified Supras at the show, this one featured a Pandem kit. Unlike the others, GReddy’s Supra was a serious purpose-built drift car. The BMW B58 engine is bolstered thanks to a BorgWarner EFR 7163G turbocharger, as well as GReddy’s own intercooler, intake and exhaust manifolds, oil cooler, and exhaust, all functioning in harmony thanks to a MoTeC management system. Instead of the automatic ZF transmission, you’ll find a Samsonas sequential gearbox paired to a ClutchMasters FX850 twin-plate clutch. Helping achieve more angle for drifting is a Wisefab kit and some KW Suspension coilovers. All of the hard work put into building a fully operational drift car earned GReddy the Best GR Supra award from Toyota USA themselves! The team from Yokohama pulled out all the stops for their outdoor booth at this year’s show, showing off all sorts of racecars in their iconic red and black livery, including the new Supra. These guys definitely have our vote for coolest booth design of the year.

Of course, these are just a few of the almost countless examples of the A90 Supra at SEMA 2019, but overall we would have to say the platform is growing on us the more we see the aftermarket get their hands on it. The future of the Supra is bright.

The entire build has no shortage of intricate details worth drooling over, but as you might expect, the bespoke body kit is the most immediately noticeable, save for the incredible custom vinyl wrap from Impressive Wrap. The one-off kit, now called the “Button Built BB355 widebody system,” was designed by Button, clay-sculpted by John Lazorack, and then laser-scanned with a FARO Arm system in order to make up the data required for panels to be milled and formed for Button’s car, as well as any future F355 clientele. The Button Built body includes front fenders inspired by the iconic F40, front and rear bumpers, rear quarter panels, Koenig 522BB-inspired C-pillar ducts, an acrylic engine cover, rear wing, a rear F430 Scuderia-styled diffuser, splitters, hood vents, rocker panel ducts,

and canards. All in, the kit is a radical transformation which takes inspiration from several iconic Ferrari designs and motorsports endeavors, heavily influenced by the 2009 Super GT series Ferrari F430. Tuner style is always on the forefront of Button’s mind when putting together these exceptionally well-rounded Ferrari builds, and most of that comes to fruition at ground level. A 19-inch set of Rotiform’s 3-piece forged OZR wheels with double-step lips, measuring 11-inches and 15-inches wide in the front and rear respectively, are tucked under the custom fenders when the car is parked thanks to an air suspension system and some custom tubular control arms. As you might expect given the car’s booth location at the show, the Rotiform wheels are wrapped in super sticky Toyo R888R tires, filling out the wheel wells at 285/30 in the front and 345/30 in the rear. Inside the cockpit of this Italian fighter jet, you’ll find more race-inspired cues. A full Momo motorsports interior includes a set of carbon fiber fixed-back Daytona EVO seats, steering wheel with quick-release system, and a 6-point camlock harness system. The carbon fiber look continues on the floor thanks to APR’s carbon fiber track mats, and the reupholstered interior panels give a modern touch in line

with the digital dash. Eric Cheney of Voodoo Engineering fabricated a perfect 6-point FIAapproved roll cage as well, making it a readyto-rock track weapon for the street. Around the back of the mid-engined monster, you’ll immediately notice that the engine is in full view. Taking inspiration from the F40 yet again, Button used an acrylic engine cover to keep the 40-valve 3.5L V8 and all of its custom work on display. While the Ferrari F129 B/C is a potent V8 on its own, the performance of this car had to match the reputation it was sure to attain with all of the custom bodywork. Utilizing a symmetrical twin set of Xona Rotor XR5455 Eco Series turbochargers, Tial wastegates and blowoff valves, and cooling by way of CSF Radiators and Aviva Instrument intercoolers, the Ferrari V8 makes an easy 600-plus horsepower thanks to some tuning from Eric Cheney. Despite numerous deviations from the socalled “traditional” Ferrari essence, we reckon this stanced-out and boosted F355 Berlinetta could tickle the fancy of some more forgiving Ferrari purists, even if it isn’t Ferrari red. With ample modifications focused on both style and performance, the daily-driven supercar is built to be abused. “I want my cars to look great when parked,” Button tells us, “yet give me the ample space necessary to drive the piss out of them.” Frankly, if anyone isn’t into this build, they’re the ones missing out.

A massive heart attack took Shawn, but that is not his story. When you look back on his life and career, he lived to make a difference. He was quiet but confident, humble but competitive, driven and chill, so funny and honest. He had a quietly infectious personality. He would always take a break from any event to tune into his favorite soccer or football team. Shawn had a huge love for dogs – he would always take a puppy and give them space on his lap. Dogs knew this guy had got a lot of love to give, and maybe some treats.

Show creator, apparel designer, show winner, collaborator, mentor, friend, son, brother, confidante, best friend to so many - Shawn was all of that and more! One of his strengths was his skill as a collaborator and communicator. More than anything, he was a huge help to so many that would ask. It could be a logo design, a flyer, a website, a rendering for a car build. He pitched in for judging and event help. Sometimes he was just a shoulder to lean on. He gave so much of himself to others. If you felt lost, Shawn would guide you. At heart, Shawn was an artist.

His graphic designs and words stood above all others. He wanted to create a style and look all his own. Shawn’s professional design services would create the path his client should follow, from branding and websites to the overall feel – and many clients took note. Shawn revolutionized how automotive shows judged cars. He was pioneering a new direction in developing eJudged with a team that included Jut Imes, Pete Colello, and Dave Maurer. The app eJudged was used and implemented by all types of shows around the country. This made Shawn very proud! In true Shawn fashion, he would bring a team to support the show promoters. He was there to help implement this new platform and facilitate an easy transition for the show to use this tool to make their

He took home the top award at SEMA with his Scion tC build. When he won, his smile was unmistakable. When he raised the huge cup over his head, he was like a prizefighter hoisting a belt after the title bout. He was glowing with pride. Another build that reached the pinnacle of competition. Shawn was the best in the sea of great builders. Other top builders always respected and enjoyed Shawn’s work. It always takes a team of solid friends to handle those pressure-filled builds. He had a deep

crew, and they always had his back, just like he always had theirs. Shawn was a family guy. His mother and father, Carol Baker and Jim Brong, always supported Shawn’s direction in life. His sister had one amazing brother. I guess those that knew Shawn well felt like he was family. His family was our family; his passion was our passion. In a lot of the photos I have looked through of Shawn, he was often standing behind or next to people in a way that says: “I got you.” He lifted others up when they were down. He came through when others wouldn’t. He empowered you! He was the ultimate inspiration for how to live: never give up, always persevere. He would often take a rough idea and make it beautiful. For a man of such few words, he could write perfectly. At his celebration of life, someone told me that Shawn wrote for a local Harrisburg newspaper. That person told me, “I wish he would have stuck with the paper.” That wasn’t him – he couldn’t be boxed in. He lived a life of automotive adventure: going to shows, building cars to win awards,

He had his own shows – Spring Breakdown, Junkfood Meet, and his newest show, ACES. Those shows always felt different. The vibe was always relaxed, yet exciting. He had a true knack for bringing people together. In many of his business deals he would be the broker to bring the team together. Shawn Baker had a lot of love to give, and it was a real treat to any that knew him to get to know him better. Whether you were a friend, family member, or knew him from the industry, that was how we all felt. I was fortunate enough to talk to him a lot over the past few years as we grew closer as friends and partners

in business. He was always climbing that mountain, helping others in some ways made him stronger and happier. More people than I could have ever imagined had a similar relationship with Shawn. He earned every award he received, but the biggest award of all is to have been loved and respected by so many. I still try to talk to him in my mind, like he isn’t gone. I feel like he will be there waiting on the other side ready to go for a ride with all of us. I will love and miss him forever. I know so many of us feel the same. alen Reger of Speed Industry has focused the last six-plus years on the iconic 86/FRS/BRZ platform. “I’ve always loved the Supra.” mentions Reger, “It has always been a dream car to build.” Eventually, after lots of success in his 86 endeavors, Reger decided it was time to pursue the Supra dream, and it seemed like a natural progression to graduate up to the “big brother” Toyota. Utilizing everything him and his team learned during their extensive development and building of Toyota’s 86 platform, the guys at Speed Industry got to work transforming the new Supra inside and out. A custom made air intake and a CG Precision downpipe paired to a Magnaflow xMOD exhaust system let the B58 engine breathe easier, and the exhaust system’s carbon tips match the Fly 1 carbon fiber lip kit and Rexpeed rear wing quite well. At ground level, a set of custom spec HRE S101 forged 3-piece wheels are wrapped in Yokohama Advan NEOVA tires, which meet the body lower thanks to a set of KW Suspension V3 coilovers. Inside, they outfitted as much carbon fiber trim as they could, including accents on the dash, and installed a Cusco harness bar. With a tasteful yet impactful change to the car from all angles, the Speed Industry team has set themselves apart as a trend-setter for yet another platform.
