2023 Gamma Xi Zeta Chapter Scholarship Luncheon

Page 1

Greetings from our Chapter President

Congratulations to our exemplary Scholarship Recipients and Honorees. We celebrate each of you for your hard work and contributions to the community.

To the Extraordinary Zeta of the Year and our very first Zeta Trailblazer Awardee, both of your extraordinary service to the Sisterhood goes unmatched.

We thank you both for always showing up FINER!

Over the last three years we have been blessed to be able to reflect on the challenges of our isolative period and rediscover the beauty that is called “being together”. We thank God that we are all together again this year.

We also thank all of you for your continued support and love as this historic chapter continues to do the outstanding service work in the community! 2023 marks 75 years of service and that is a great testament to the consistent efforts made by the women of Gamma Xi Zeta to “show up in the room as who we say we are”!

We have been driven to do the Service in our community. We have focused on educating our children through Scholarship. We have developed our bond through Sisterly Love, and we continuously show up as Finer Women.

The true essence of the word Extraordinary is not wasted on Gamma Xi Zeta!

I remain humbled by the opportunity to have been chosen to serve as President. As I bring my Presidency to a close, I look forward to continued great things being accomplished in the name of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. 75 years of uninterrupted historical Service!! Gamma Xi Zeta, You Rock!

Continued blessings and please enjoy the day!

Extraordinary Gifts for Service

10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

1 Peter 4:10-11

Dr. Margie M. Daniels is an Administrator in the Peekskill City School District with over 25 years experience in the field of education. As the administrator of Equity, Diversity Inclusivity and Belonging, she has been afforded the opportunity to grow with the Peekskill City School District in keeping its promise in giving our best for ALL STUDENTS and the PEEKSKILL COMMUNITY.

A lifelong learner, Margie is a graduate of St. John’s University, where she earned her doctorate in 2015. However, she proudly states that she attended and graduated from Westchester Community College, and while there she learned how to be a student and to enjoy what education can open to you.

She was accepted into the sisterhood of the FINEST SORORITY, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated and the STELLAR chapter: GAMMA XI ZETA in 2011. As a member of a number of civic organizations and social action networks, she finds it imperative to be involved in community action. Only through action and dedication to social justice causes, will we be able to right the wrongs around us.

As the great, Muhammad Ali stated, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth,” this is what she believes. Her greatest joy comes from service, and she believes that that is a gift God has given her.

A lover of travel and enjoying life to the fullest, is her delight! Seeing and experiencing God’s beauty in the world domestically and abroad is fulfilling and something that she encourages old and young people to do. That’s a passion that I love and continue to bask in.

Congratulations to the finer women of Gamma Xi Zeta Chapter on 75 extraordinary years of embracing the legacy of our Founders by upholding, encouraging and supporting the highest standard of academic achievement and excellence in the Westchester community.

GAMMA XI ZETA CHAPTER GAMMA XI ZETA CHAPTER GAMMA XI ZETA CHAPTER FOR 75 YEARS OF EMBRACING THE EXTRAORDINARY!

Officially chartered on February 3, 1952, Beta Psi Sigma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. celebrated its 71st year of existence in 2023 and seeks transformation through program innovation in proudly serving the communities of Westchester and Bronx counties. With an active membership of 49 financial brothers, Beta Psi Sigma has methodically built a reputation for excellence in programmatic execution, ingenuity, and delivering exceptional experiences that:

 increase chapter visibility and trigger partnerships from a host of local organizations.

 generate increased financial support for the chapter’s primary fundraisers

 allow expansion of current service programs and community service hours.

 influence interest from potential new members. And while Beta Psi Sigma continues to define its branding strategy, one thing is certain: the chapter has become known around local, regional, and national circles as a preeminent chapter that pursues excellence in every aspect and in so doing elevates the performance of neighboring chapters of the Blue and White family.

We all know serving in fraternal organizations, while vastly rewarding, is not immune from challenges even under the most normal of circumstances. In the throes of a global pandemic, whose tragic effects we have all felt, Beta Psi Sigma – under the unwavering leadership of current President, Deryk Hammett – has galvanized its membership to a record number of community programs, chapter service hours, forging new external partnerships, reclamation of existing brothers and consecutive years of new membership intake.

To be more specific, Beta Psi Sigma continues to:

 Actively serve local communities with nearly 6,000 hours of service the last 3 years.

 Expand its social media presence (1,300 IG followers and growing) with creative content.

 Use digital engagement tools to improve efficiencies and communication.

 Appear or be featured in more regional/national publications than ever.

 Lead the Eastern Region in “Black Spend” dollars (two years running) with $125,298.00 in 2021 and an impressive $357,386.04.

 Develop strong partnerships with D9 organizations, local CBOs, elected officials, and municipalities within its service footprint.

 Introduce creative program concepts such as “Let’s Get Black to Business” as well unique video content to promote and sustain community engagement.

 Garner media coverage by relentlessly shining a spotlight on health and wellness (physical and mental), exercising our political strength through candidate forums, voting and gun violence just to name a few.

In 2018, Beta Psi Sigma established a nationally recognized Sigma Beta Club that continues to grow in popularity with its unique approach to engaging young men of color and their parents via programming experiences that emphasize education, build character, promote teamwork, and reinforce the importance of serving others, especially those most in need.

In addition, Beta Psi Sigma created a non-profit arm known as the D.R.E.A.M.S Foundation which received official IRS recognition in April of 2020. The Foundation’s mission is to support education through scholarship awards and other related community development initiatives.

At the 2023 NYS Founder’s Day celebration, Beta Psi Sigma was honored to have three of its members receive the awards for Brotherhood (Bro. Keenan Shoulders), Scholarship (Bro. David Vandiver) and Service (Bro. David Roper).

With an eye towards increasing its impact through sustained growth in membership, Beta Psi Sigma is in the process of planning for major undertakings in the coming 18-24 months which will mandate solid execution and stellar collaboration between public, private and civic sectors.

For as long as they operate, Beta Psi Sigma’s two primary objectives will be to build T.R.U.S.T (Taking Responsibility to Uplift, Sustain and Transform) and deliver I.M.P.A.C.T (Industrious Men Propelling Achievement and Community Transformation) within the communities they serve.
