Welcome

to the September issue of Subsea & Offshore Service Magazine, the journal for the Oil and Gas, Subsea, Offshore and Renewables markets.

We open this edition with an insight from Christopher Young, Director of Energy and Natural Resources Strategy Group, KPMG who advises that oil and gas operators need to take a strategic approach to decommissioning activity in order to create new opportunities in UKCS. On (page 46), within Subsea Equipment & ROV Services, we take a look at Motive Offshore and how the firm is now well equipped to provide assistance in major subsea projects and meet the requirements of their customers. We resume our focus on Training & Development from (page 56) with The Underwater Centre who elaborate on how they have enhanced their ROV and Closed Bell training courses. I would also like to take the opportunity to apologise to Unique Group and KBAT for incorrectly captioning Ian Huggins in the accompanying photo of their article which featured in the August issue - It should have read ‘Steve MacMillan – Global Project Director of Unique Group’. Finally, from (page 64) we review all of the latest news and product innovations associated with the Hazardous Area market. If you have any news, insights or product launches that you would like to share with our readers post SPE Offshore Europe and prior to Offshore Energy, Amsterdam, please send me an email to editor@sosmagazine.biz for consideration in our October issue.

Strategic approach to decom activity could create new opportunities in UKCS Industry Viewpoint

exploration, and must take account of factors including asset portfolios, value realisation, business models, and relationships with partners and suppliers. The Wood Review and the new Oil & Gas Authority (OGA) recognise the real threat that a poorly coordinated and badly executed approach to decommissioning poses to maximising economic recovery in the UKCS, if companies operating mutually dependent infrastructure decommission earlier than they might. High operating costs in the basin and low commodity prices bring this threat closer. Earlier this year, KPMG reviewed the decommissioning landscape and options for E&P from a strategic perspective and two of our conclusions have important implications for the OGA’s basinwide agenda. By becoming much more innovative about their approaches to selling assets, separating the question of decommissioning liability from the question of asset ownership, companies could help break through the current log jam in mature-asset sales, getting latelife assets into the hands of specialist owners who could operate them more effectively for longer, supporting the goal of maximising economic recovery.

By Christopher Young, Director of Energy and Natural Resources Strategy Group, KPMG

Oil and gas operators will have to approach the challenge of decommissioning in new ways if the goal of maximising economic recovery from the UKCS is to be achieved.

4

Adopting a more strategic approach to decisions regarding late life assets could open up significant new opportunities for operators, helping to break the log jam in mature asset sales, and potentially creating new models for operator cooperation and the delivery of decommissioning services.

Challenging economics, deteriorating infrastructure, technical limits on further recovery and regulatory pressure mean that change in the offshore industry in mature provinces like the North Sea is inevitable, with industry forecasts predicting that the pace and scale of decommissioning activity is set to increase. To date, the industry has often treated decommissioning as a technical and cost challenge, with much of the discussion revolving around supplier capacity, tax relief, safety and environmental issues. However, the decommissioning decisions that operators will make are as strategically important as choices about major development projects and

As assets enter decommissioning, we also see enormous potential for the creation of new decommissioning service models. Developing these model will accelerate learning and efficiency and allow a much more integrated approach across multiple assets. There is enormous scope for increased collaboration among operators, going beyond information sharing, to develop new approaches, for example, in standards related to the plugging and abandonment of wells and other related questions, arrangements for joint campaigns on related assets, and potentially even the creation of new entities to allow common buying of services and execution of end-to-end programmes. Getting these things right will require a more focused approach by each company and a broader, more active level of cooperation among E&P firms, service companies, the OGA, and HM Treasury. The potential prize is there, but time is of the essence.

News In Brief

News In Brief.... Equalizer Group grows to develop award-winning technology The Equalizer Group, world leading innovator of flange maintenance tools for the energy sector, has set up a separate service company headed up by General Manager Alan Morrison to take forward the development of its award-winning Xtegrity system. As GM of Equalizer Flange Integrity Systems (EFIS) Alan, who has almost 30 years’ experience in the oil and gas sector, will be responsible for managing and growing all operational and sales activities for Xtegrity. Upon completion of his engineering apprenticeship, Alan began his career in the Oil & Gas industry as a Site Services Technician with Hydratight before joining Stork (formerly RBG) in 1993. Over the following 22 years he held a number of senior roles with the company in the UK, Qatar and Kazakhstan building up considerable project and operations experience at home and overseas. Xtegrity was developed as a solution to the industry wide problem of dealing with heavily corroded or degraded bolts in flange joints. It takes away the need to remove corroded bolts by “replacing” them with a new bolts which clamp around the outside of the flange and are held in place with a floating frame.

www.sosmagazine.biz

Last month, the world-leading technology of Xtegrity was recognised when it won the Grampian Award for Innovation at the Elevator Awards in the UK.

TI Geosciences TI Geosciences (TIGeo) has recently completed the digital upgrade of its 10te Roson CPT, based on the installation of a pressure compensated Icone system by A P Van den Berg. The system completed successful wet tests at TIGeo marine base in Teesside, UK and is now immediately available to mobilise for projects in water depths up to 750m. The full advanced deep push/deep water capability (single push 40m below mudline, 2000mWD) will be available in Q4 this year on completion of the redesigned and upgraded launch and recovery system, presently in build at Royal IHC. TIGeo is a newly established offshore geotechnical survey/site investigation contractor, focussing on deep and ultradeep water operations.

New joint venture between Modulift and IMES: Set to raise the lifting bar even higher Lifting industry specialists Modulift and IMES have formed a joint venture to offer an integrated management service to clients internationally.

Harkand achieves two survey firsts in Mexico Harkand has successfully carried out the first ever free inertial metrology in Mexico’s waters and at a new depth for this approach in the region. The global inspection, repair and maintenance company achieved the survey results for their client at a depth of 380fsw in the Bay of Campeche, setting a new record in the area. The scope of work saw Harkand working in collaboration with their metrology technology partner Zupt to complete the survey project in support of the installation of an expansion spool piece for a new pipeline and platform campaign in Mexico. AJ Jain, Harkand Managing Director North America and Africa said: “Our client wanted to know if the inertial metrology would better suit the project over the acoustic method. “Our personnel are experienced in both techniques so after reviewing the work we were able to determine the free inertial metrology was the most time-saving and cost effective solution in this circumstance.

The two companies – leading players in their respective niche markets in the sector – have combined to create the new customisable package which will focus exclusively on “below the hook” operations.

“Although a diver had not performed inertial metrology in this water depth before, we were confident in our saturation diving team’s experience and capabilities. Our client had the results in just 12 hours allowing the expansion spool piece design and fabrication to proceed very quickly. In comparison, the acoustic method would have taken three days to be reported back.”

The Lift Management Services (LMS) offering links all components and processes to give clients a full support mechanism for any major heavy lifting project from start to finish.

The expansion spool piece was fabricated onboard the vessel in two days, with the Harkand saturation diving team successfully installing the spool piece without any issues.

Magma Products launches new decommissioning software solution A newly launched software system aims to minimise decommissioning time and costs while maximising returns from decommissioned materials and equipment. The Decommissioning Management System (DCMS) has been developed and launched by oil and gas engineering consultancy Magma Products. It provides companies with a start-to-finish route through the complexities and regulatory requirements involved in decommissioning. The system has been successfully used in a major decommissioning project in the southern North Sea, and has received positive industry feedback.

Every operator with a facility to decommission has an obligation to review the potential for reusing and recycling each item from the facility before disposal. The DCMS asset management tool has been designed to systematically guide and update operators through this process, said Paul Rushton, Managing Director of Magma Products. “We identified a gap in the market for a company to help operators ensure that decommissioning is sequenced in the most effective way and individual items are reused, recycled or disposed of in the most environmentally and cost-effective way,” said Paul. The DCMS system uses tag numbers and colour coding to identify each element identified for decommissioning and track it throughout each phase of the decommissioning process.

www.sosmagazine.biz

Paul said: “We believe it offers significant savings in cost and time. It produces a clear, reliable and auditable trail of individual items decommissioned, the efforts an operator has taken to sell, reuse or recycle them and, if the operator has had to dispose of an item, how and where they’ve done this.”

8

www.sosmagazine.biz

Between them, Simon and Cory offer combined industry experience totaling almost 40 years in a variety of settings and they will play key roles in driving forward UTEC’s ambitious plans for continued global growth in key marketplaces.

Leading the way

It is also entirely consistent with the increasingly important concept of the circular economy, where products are no longer simply thrown away.

“The DCMS system has received encouraging feedback on its use to date from operators, contractors, waste handlers and from environmental executives.”

Microbially influenced corrosion meets NORM at NCIMB Oilfield microbiology experts NCIMB are licensed by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency to handle radioactive materials, ensuring clients don’t lose valuable data as a result of the presence of naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) in samples that require analysis. Microorganisms can influence corrosion in oil and gas facilities with serious consequences, therefore it is important to monitor systems for the presence of potentially problematic species. Early action taken to control the levels of microbial contamination can pay dividends with respect to reducing the threat of corrosion. Corrosion coupons are used to assess general corrosion rates and microbial growth on the walls of pipes and vessels, which may lead to localised corrosion. However, the occurrence of NORM scale usually leads to coupons being discarded with the loss of valuable data, due to

restrictions on the handling of radioactive materials.

from sample points that are constantly subject to NORM contamination.

NCIMB are not only specialists in the identification and quantification of microorganisms that can influence corrosion, but also offer a full suite of radiological analysis on scales, pig wax and produced water samples.

NCIMB can accept NORM contaminated coupons for analysis and can undertake microbial analysis as well as reporting on the NORM contamination levels. Working together with our partners North East Corrosion Engineers (NECE), we can also process the coupons and calculate general corrosion and pitting rates”.

NCIMB’s Oilfield Services Manager Cheryl Ross said: “At NCIMB we can report on the activity of radium and daughters, lead-210, actinium-228 and polonium. An added benefit of this is that we can also handle NORM contaminated corrosion coupons for microbiological analysis. The availability of new techniques in molecular biology means that we can obtain more information from coupons than was possible in the past. However, the precipitation of NORM scale is a common phenomenon that can result in coupons being discarded. Bacteria are just as likely to flourish in the presence of NORM scale as in any other location, but operating companies may never get data

New 3D print service for oil and gas sector puts plastic modelling within easy reach

www.sosmagazine.biz

Printing in 3D has come of age in Aberdeen with the launch of a new business targeted specifically at the oil and gas industry, both subsea and topside.

PlastiPrint 3D is the brainchild of former North-Sea drilling engineer Gary Cairns who has launched the service as a cost effective way for local businesses to create working models on demand. Mr Cairns said: “Until now, turning 2D designs into 3D models has been an expensive and time consuming process, but 3D plastic printing makes it much easier to evaluate products, take them to market, and to train staff on their use. “The oil and gas industry lends itself particularly well to this technology because so many products are simply far too unwieldy to showcase easily. When you 3D print them to a smaller scale, you can take them right into your client’s office.” These benefits also extend to exhibiting at events like Offshore Europe, where stand space is often at a premium. The PlastiPrint 3D process involves building up a solid model in minute layers,

10

as thin as 25 microns. “We’re among the very few suppliers able to print at such a fine resolution, allowing complex structures to be scaled without loss of detail,” said Mr Cairns, adding that clients are already also using the process to troubleshoot. Our 3D models are perfect for brainstorming sessions and identifying potential issues.” “This easily creates a disconnect that can affect how productively the equipment is used, but we can close that knowledge gap by adding 3D models to the training process,” he said.

“Even in today’s challenging market, I am confident there is a strong demand for what I am offering, and my goal is for PlastiPrint 3D to become known industry wide as the go to provider of top quality 3D printing services.”

BP quad milestone for Babcock’s Rosyth site A major milestone has been reached in Babcock’s delivery of 73 subsea structures for BP’s Quad.

To date Babcock has delivered 65 of 73 structures including all of the 2015 programme requirements with the remaining 8 at advanced stages of the project lifecycle.

204 offshore redevelopment project, 130km west of Shetland, forming an integral part of the major investment in the upgrading and replacement of the subsea facilities to enable the full development of the reserves. Two highly engineered Manifolds, the largest and most complex constructions within the project, have been manufactured, painted and outfitted, at Babcock’s Rosyth Facility on the Forth. With the combined weight of 326 tonnes the Manifolds are central parts of the 2015 installation programme. The structures were transported to Lerwick by freighter and then transferred to a dedicated heavy lift vessel for installation at the Schiehallion and Loyal oil and gas fields, helping to extend

production at the North Sea site until 2035. Babcock, the UK’s largest engineering services support company, has also installed pipe spools and pressure tested the structures at Rosyth before handing them over to BP and its sub-contractors to carry out Controls Fit Out (CFO) and Site Integration Testing (SIT). The Manifolds were joined on the journey to the North Sea production site by two Control Distribution Assemblies.

“We are pleased to have delivered this hugely significant part of BP’s Quad 204 offshore redevelopment project. The Manifolds are major pieces of highly complex engineering and it is testament to the skill, ingenuity and hard work of our workforce that the structures are now on their way to play their part in accessing remaining hydrocarbon reserves in the Schiehallion and Loyal fields. We were also thrilled, to be recognised for our safety performance on this programme.”

Charles Forrester Project Manager, Energy and Marine Services from Babcock.

Sonomatic to build a new multi-disciplined NDT base in Aberdeen: Facility to cover full range of NDT Inspections Sonomatic, a market leader in the provision of advanced automated ultrasonic inspection services, announces its plans to build a brand new multi-disciplined facility that will allow the company to cover the entire range of NDT Inspections. The new state of the art premises will house radiography and hydro testing bays and have the ability to perform heattreatment on client’s equipment. The RAIS division will also offer a mobile NDT service to all onshore clients, including UT, MPI, liquid penetrant, radiography and heat-treatment.

www.sosmagazine.biz

The location has been very carefully selected with emphasis given to the client’s logistical requirements. Sonomatic recognises that

12

during high turnaround shutdown seasons, every mile travelled counts and adds to the time the client/asset is kept waiting for the return of their equipment. To optimise the ability to reduce this time and to ensure Sonomatic have addressed their environmental responsibilities, they have chosen to invest in a new site development, named “The Core”, located in Bridge of Don to the north of Aberdeen City Centre. The Core is located approximately 4 miles from Aberdeen Harbour, 1 mile from the AECC. However, another very important factor in the decision to move to the Core is the planned route of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route. It will finish/start on the A90 (in very close proximity to Sonomatic). It will encompass all major industrial sites, passing by Portlethan, Kingswells and Dyce as well as being a feeder route for all inner city clients. In addition, Sonomatic hope to meet clients requirements from all over Scotland by taking full advantage of the A90 and the AWPR. Sonomatic’s new facility will create a centre of excellence for all NDT, NII and Advanced NDT requirements and will pull together the highly specialised technicians and engineers from the existing Sonomatic specialised services division. However, the vision does not stop at NDT. The company’s RAIS division has listened to its clients and has ensured there is room to extend its facilities and services to cover the addition of a paint shop and possible other offerings. Sonomatic aims to show their current and prospective clients they are a willing partner to help with all of their needs and requirements.

Destec Engineering Ltd still leading the way Destec is synonymous with innovation, engineering high quality connectors for the oil & gas industry. Destec have been in business for over 45 years and it is a family owned company run by Mr. Barry Porter, Managing Director The engineers at Destec are coming up with new ideas for the subsea connections as the market becomes more innovative and complicated. Since its inception in 1984, the GSB Single Bolt Clamp is still to this day designed and manufactured by Destec to serve the North Sea, Oil and Gas industry which shows the quality that Destec work hard to achieve. Their wide range of products are fully traceable, manufactured and inspected at Destec’s factory in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, which gives Destec full control over the products that they produce. Furthermore, with major customers like BP, Shell, Onesubsea and Alstom they pride themselves in providing the best service. Destec has a highly skilled workforce most of whom have worked at the company for 25 years. Going forward, they continue to recruit new members of staff to cope with the foreseeable workload increase. This year Destec has reinvested in new CNC machines (having spent around £1 million) - this is so Destec can keep up with the demand for Destec Subsea connectors - and later on this year they plan to extend their factory.

Destec Service Team on site

“Even with the uncertainty in the oil & gas market we have still grown, and this is due to Destec promoting its products to a wider audience than we had before. With new distributors in the Far East, and soon the Middle East, currently we export around 70% of our products. As our products such as our 4 bolt clamp connector (G-range), can be used in many applications (For e.g. Chemical Plants and LNG Facility etc), more and more companies are approaching us to use our connectors. In addition, Destec has a 24hrs 7 days a week service team, we can maintain the product on-site with On-

site Machining, Bolt Torque Tensioning and Vessel Cutting, which gives us the edge over our competitors.” Mark Lamyman, Global Sales & Marketing Manager at Destec

The vessel cutting service that Destec can offer takes the service team all over the world; using a dry cutting method they can cut a cracker unit vessel with a diameter of 17 meters in 24hrs. It is one of the safest and fastest methods around today and more customers in the refining industry want Destec’s regeneration vessel cutting. Destec will be looking to extend its agreement with ExxonMobil later this year and has already extended their agreement with Chevron Thailand securing a deal until 2017.

Human Factors in Health and Safety Recent accidents, including those at Texas City, Buncefield and Deepwater Horizon, have highlighted the importance of human factors – how the people, the job and the organisation interact as a whole – in the safety performance of a business. Yet many of those responsible for managing human factors have no formal training in the behavioural sciences.

Human Factors in Health and Safety addresses that gap, with modular training on the core human factors issues in chemical and process safety.

Kværner selects Nord-Lock for Nyhamna Oil & Gas Update: Recent developments within the oil and gas industry include Kværner selecting Nord-Lock steel construction washers (NLSC) for the Nyhamna Expansion Project, as well as the recent launch of ‘No Need For Retightening’. Kværner, a Norway-based engineering and construction services company, recently won a contract from Shell to develop and expand the Nyhamna plant, one of Norway’s largest mainland developments. Kværner has chosen Nord-Lock to prevent the bolts from loosening. More than 300,000 bolted joints will be assembled with Nord-Lock. “Safety always comes first and it was very important for our customer, Shell, to prevent the bolts from loosening,” says Ove Sætrevik, Project Engineer at Kværner. “At Kværner, we’ve worked with Nord-Lock before and we know it is the number one solution for locking bolt connections.” Kværner has selected Nord-Lock SC-washers for the Nyhamna project, which are designed to fit HR/HV bolts in accordance with EN14399-3/ EN14399-4. The Nyhamna Expansion Project is planned for completion by mid-2016, in parallel with Statoil’s Aasta Hansteen development in the Norwegian Sea. Ove Sætrevik thinks similar projects will follow.

New concept to save millions for rig operators

www.sosmagazine.biz

The harsh working environments of onshore and offshore oil and gas facilities demand strict international regulatory requirements on the industry. These regulatory requirements are set by different classification societies. One such requirement is annual

18

torque controls on 20 percent of all bolt connections on drilling equipment. These torque controls cost USD 25-40 million during the 25-30 years lifetime of an offshore rig. In Norway, one of the world’s largest oil-producing countries, Nord-Lock addresses this time-consuming and costly practice with its new concept No Need for Retightening (NNFR). The concept is to be offered together with a fastener and logistical partner. The kit is supplied pre-lubricated and comprises the required nuts, bolts and Nord-Lock washers, and ensures that bolts do not loosen, regardless of dynamic loads and vibrations. While NNFR increases safety, operators and rig owners can apply to classification bodies for exemption from the annual torque control, thereby saving millions. Rig owners or operators must also meet the requirements for assembly (namely, that NNFR is fitted and tightened by certified installers) before they can apply for exemption from the torque controls. The solution was nominated for the ONS 2014 Innovation Award, reflecting its potential importance for the oil and gas industry worldwide.

“The benefits for both land-based and offshore operators are huge,With NNFR, the operators make significant savings on maintenance, while ensuring the safety of their equipment.”

says Petter Viken, Business Developer Oil & Gas, at Nord-Lock Group.

has in us to deliver, even when under immense pressure.”

Initially designed for an offshore project for Siemens, the Cable

Guide Clamp has now been developed by Ellis into a full range suitable for use with large diameter cables.

Richard Shaw, managing director of Ellis, said: “Two major factors in our on-going success have been our ability to innovate and the tried and trusted nature of our products.”

“This though was the first time a customer has come to us with a new product requirement during a live project situation –

something that clearly demonstrates the level of trust the market

The challenge set to the Ellis team, which had previously

developed a roller-system for the installation of HV cables in

power tunnels, was to develop a solution that would feed, and then restrain, seven 117mm diameter cables along a specified number of twists and turns.

The Cable Guide Clamp achieves this in two stages. Firstly,

cables are guided by it into their final location, while trumpeted

entry and exit points ensure the cable is not damaged when fed through particularly sharp angled turns. Once the cable is laid correctly, the top half of the guide is removed, a fixing piece

installed directly onto the cable and the top half re-secured, thus turning it into a fully-functioning HV cable clamp.

“To come through this challenge with Siemens’ problem solved; a major specification secured; and an entirely new product

range ready to launch is a clear demonstration of the expertise and technical know-how Ellis is able to bring to any project – something that really does make us stand out from the opposition,” added Richard.

Simplified connection for multi-use high voltage cable Abtech have developed a range of high voltage junction boxes specifically designed for the termination of combined power and instrumentation cables within the same Ex-rated enclosure. These enclosures provide a safety critical connection point for offshore umbilical cables or onshore power distribution systems. Identified with a 125 suffix, these marine grade stainless steel enclosures build upon Abtech’s field proven HV range and are fully certified for use in Zone 1 and 21 hazardous areas.

www.sosmagazine.biz

The ABJB125 was recently selected for use on an upgrade project in the Middle East encompassing sixty five offshore platforms

24

all powered by an interconnecting 15kv ring main system. This solution utilised two enclosures per platform to manage the incoming and outgoing multi-use cables. Due to the site specific conditions and the stringent requirements of the end user, Abtech engineers worked closely with the main EPC contractor to tailor the ABJB125 solution for maximum efficiency. To combat the rigours of the offshore environment, an anti-condensation heater was also incorporated within the design and a special epoxy paint finish applied to prevent corrosion. Abtech’s splitter box design allows both high voltage and fibre optic cables to be terminated within the same hazardous area enclosure. The high voltage section supplies power to the platform, whilst the fibre optic section is used to control instrumentation and communications. This single cable design layout had not previously been implemented by the local project team, however this approach greatly reduced overall installation costs on the project as the installation requirements could be combined, including the supporting infrastructure (cable ladder, cleats, termination kits, etc). Trelleborg set to slash downtime with innovative sealwelding technology In what is sure to prove a real turning point for the oil and gas industry, leading manufacturer and supplier of sealing solutions, Trelleborg, has launched its revolutionary new SealWelding™ technology that allows seals to be welded in-situ on an FPSO platform, eliminating the need for it to disconnect and return to shore. Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has patented the new in-situ SealWelding™ technology that allows swivel stack seals to be replaced whilst the platform remains in operation. The seals are manufactured from Trelleborg’s established proprietary material, ensuring full offshore industry compliancy and reliability for the operator. The new technology will massively reduce the downtime and associated costs that come from maintaining an FPSO swivel stack.

“With financial data suggesting that hourly losses for downtime from an offshore production facility can be the highest of any industry, any reduction in downtime can provide significant cost savings for the operator.

www.sosmagazine.biz

Seals are vital when it comes to ensuring the continued efficient and safe operation of an FPSO swivel stack. Previously, scheduled replacement of these seals would require the vessel to disconnect and return to shore, whereby the components

28

would be disassembled and new seals fitted. The cost and travelling time required to return an FPSO to shore can very quickly add up. In fact, when maintaining the swivel stack, a critical element on board any facility, typically the FPSO would be down for between six and 12 weeks.”

Henk-Willem Sanders, FPSO Focus Group Leader, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions. The only viable solution to solve the problem of having an FPSO return to shore for scheduled maintenance was to develop a technique that allowed the swivel stack seals to be replaced in-situ. For this to be feasible, ends of a cut seal need to be bonded offshore in a secure environment and conform to approved industry standards.

In a controlled Trelleborg production facility, Trelleborg manufactures the precut swivel stack seals. Offshore, onboard the FPSO, the seal is then installed by Trelleborg’s certified service team using a portable ATEX Zone 1 certified SealWelding™ system. The pre-cut ends of the seal are secured within the fully enclosed welding system and then pressurized, so that the weld can take place. Production on other swivel stacks can continue without risk whilst the welding process continues. The ATEX Zone 1 certified control cabinet is purged, ensuring the safe operation of the system, as well as monitoring and logging all process conditions. Once the welding process is complete, the seal is removed from the SealWelding™ system, before being polished and inspected. Henk-Willem Sanders continues: “Safety and scheduled maintenance on FPSOs is of critical importance to offshore oil and gas industry operators. The associated costs combined with project downtime from pipeline disconnection, however, can be huge. Following intensive research and development initiatives, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has developed our patented portable SealWelding™ system that not only conforms to existing offshore safety standards but also dramatically improves the bottom line for offshore operators.” Trelleborg Sealing Solutions will be showcasing their SealWeldingTM technology at SPE Offshore Europe in Hall 1, Stand No. 1H81

Caledonian Industries (CIL) to promote Caltrex® PEEK at OE 2015 SPE Offshore Europe 2015

Caledonian Industries (CIL) are promoting Caltrex® PEEK, manufactured by the Dynamic Cast Moulding System (DCMS®), on Stand 5B-04 at SPE Offshore Europe 2015 in Aberdeen. DCMS® is a novel process requiring little or no annealing in addition to shorter production cycles and cost efficient, Nearnet-Shape production. Technically, one of the most significant advantages is the reduction in moulding stresses using CIL’s revolutionary PEEK DCMS®. The production cycle is significantly shorter than compression moulding and after more than 10 years of production, no porosity or inclusions have been found in our parts. Unlike compression moulding process, our material is void free, thus eliminating the frustrating discovery of a void or contamination of a billet at the final stages of a manufactured part and the delay of waiting for its replacement. A feature of our DCMS® machines is the capability for tubes to be moulded at either 150mm long for small to medium runs or 600mm long when volumes are higher with diameters capable of up to 400mm. Caltrex® semi-finished tubes are currently available from 55mm up to 360mm OD with variable inside diameter for each, thus allowing production of Near-net-Shape. Additional sizes are continually being added. New tooling can be manufactured significantly faster than that of traditional compression, extrusion or injection moulded tooling and customized blends

can be manufactured to meet customer demand. A suite of CNC lathes complement the DCMS® manufactured materials. These lathes are used for the manufacture of precision engineering plastic sealing products and components in materials such as PEEK, PTFE etc. Typically these components are used within down-hole tools and control systems.

SPE Offshore Europe 2015

Multi Phase Separator Control Over the years, many traditional technologies used for interface and, increasingly, multiphase measurement and control have often proven unreliable when heavy emulsions, sand, mud and foam are involved. This is because the parameters on which the measurements are based are not constant or stable and build up interferes with sensitive instruments used. Changes to both the products and processing in the vessel contribute to this uncertainty, making the separation characteristics and interface(s) difficult to understand and control effectively. For applications in separators, treaters, free water knockout drums and desalters for example, the development of a clean and distinct, well-behaved interface boundary is often only achieved by longer residence times (not always available), large quantities of effective chemical demulsifiers (expensive), higher operating temperatures (extra energy inputs) or specialized separation technology (new capital equipment). However, in spite of these best efforts, there can still be a degree of an emulsion layer still remaining in the process, so how can that be effectively monitored and therefore controlled? Effectively monitoring the emulsion layer between the upper and lower fluids is critical and being aware of multiple phases foam, mud or sludge build up in the process is also extremely important. Understanding if and how these co-exist, behave and respond in the separation process, is key to the maximization of quality crude throughput. Nuclear gauging technology can help with this, by making independent multiple density measurements across a defined span of the vessel elevation gives a valuable insight into the separation process. The operator has a density profile that monitors the dynamic changes on a real time basis. Detection of very small density changes verifies the separation development when subjected to different treatments. This can enable the automatic control of water withdrawal, dosing of additives, optimise production and minimise outages.

www.sosmagazine.biz

The VEGA Multi-Point Density Array radiometric solution works by measuring the changing density at fixed points across the process. Each point can be monitored to produce a detailed

picture of what is happening in the vessel, along with point alarms for sand and foam detection. If no clear process interface exists, an emulsion layer can be accurately tracked from the brine on the bottom to the oil towards the top of the vessel.

The VEGA MDA system offers many benefits to the end user. These include: 1. Multi phase density profile across the elevation span monitors changes in the separation process on a real time basis. 2. Externally mounted electronics withstand higher process temperatures, offer easier maintenance and performance monitoring. 3. Monitoring each fixed point enables trending to show how the interface/emulsion is changing. 4. if any single density detector fails, it does not compromise the operation of the system, offering high reliability. 5. When no clear interface exists, the system provides valuable information about the emulsion layer. 6. Flexible mounting bracket system provides ease of installation. 7. Simple air and brine water calibration reduces the commissioning time to a minimum. VEGA’s strong tradition of product development and refinement continues with the Multi-Point Density Array (MDA) solution for fixed-point interface profiling measurements for these difficult interface/heavy emulsion processes. Visit the VEGA stand Hall 4 D75 at Offshore Europe 7-11th September to discover more about separator interphase and phase monitoring solutions. An example of a bespoke system we designed and built for a client is an Integrated Management System accompanied with an Intranet. This was developed to efficiently manage one of our clients’ documentation with the Intranet acting as the outlet to provide information, news and provide links to key documentation. The system recognised which department each user belonged to and relayed information and documents relevant to them, as well as a link to the IMS. The IMS had a homepage which was the focal point for all documentation, following the structure of the business.

The client wanted to improve their previous system which had resulted in duplicate documents, unapproved documents being used and incorrect information being passed between employees. SharePoint Workflow functionality allows for relatively complex scenarios to be built and in this instance these included a threestage approval process was implemented for documents edited or uploaded to the IMS; a workflow to flag documents for review when approaching a review period, an archive workflow which when initiated requires approval from an IMS Team and an Out for comments workflow which can be sent to multiple users to gain feedback on a specific document. Along with the workflows for document control, the IMS was to use managed metadata in order to ensure documents are properly categorised in the IMS, and to ensure that no duplicate documents are uploaded.

The mass appeal of Coriolis technology

SPE Offshore Europe 2015

KROHNE documents the developments and highlights of the Coriolis mass flowmeter market The straight tube design is possibly one of the most advanced designs and considered one of the milestones in Coriolis technology. Introduced by KROHNE in the early 90s the straight tube design provides the lowest pressure drop whilst providing high accuracy. A great deal of research and development was required to make such an advanced construction possible and it has allowed the mass flowmeter to be introduced into difficult processes and environments that were never before seen as suitable for such meters.

A huge breakthrough in Coriolis mass flowmetering was however still to come. Gas entrainments in liquid media had always presented a serious challenge for mass flowmeters. Many mass flowmeters simply “freeze” their last stable reading to cover this loss of measurement. KROHNE accepted the challenge, and went on to develop and successfully implement a unique feature: Entrained Gas Management (EGM™). OPTIMASS Coriolis mass flowmeters with EGM are able to follow and correct for the varying amplitudes. This ensures no loss of measurement with gas entrainment up to 100% of volume with the meter continuing to present an actual measured reading, together with an indication or configurable alarm for the user. This flow indication can be very helpful to improve processes by identifying transient gas entrainments. Purely based on this technology, many users discovered that they had 2-phase flow, and were then able to start looking for possible causes. OPTIMASS 2400 ensures that the two best developments since the first Coriolis meter was launch are available to the end users. OPTIMASS 2400 is the meter for bulk measurement and custody transfer applications according to MID and OIML and complies with API and AGA guidelines. KROHNE remains at the forefront of Coriolis mass flowmeter technology and continues to invest significantly in research and development to ensure that they can continue to not only meet but exceed the requirements of the market place and their customers.

SPE Offshore Europe 2015

Reduce your pump’s energy consumption & improve your bottom line: The solution Reducing energy consumption and how this can contribute to profitability is an important issue for the offshore and marine industry to consider. Castle Pumps have a range of solutions that can have a considerable impact on vessel owners’ bottom line. The sea water cooling pump systems in a vessel’s engine room are often designed to cope with worst-case scenarios; they continuously operate as though the sea water temperature is at

around 40 degrees Celsius. However, in most cases it is unlikely that the vessel is operating in such conditions, and therefore the pumping system is working inefficiently and energy consumption is much above actual requirements. To ensure that on board energy costs are not unnecessarily inflated, Castle Pumps have the ability to control pump speed and energy consumption via AC frequency inverters. A frequency drive can provide savings of up to 80%, substantially reducing the on-board energy costs for vessel owners, with a typical payback period of one year. The use of a frequency inverter also reduces the wear on spare parts meaning lower maintenance costs and a reduction in pump spare purchases. It also reduces the risk of cavitation as the NPSH needed is reduced with the pump operating at its best efficiency point. Castle Pumps also offer screw pumps for low sulphur diesel oil contributing to a lower carbon future. These specially designed screw pumps have the ability to handle low viscosity fuels ensuring continuity during fuel system upgrades. The range is also available with magnetic couplings ensuring zero maintenance, with no chance of leakage.

Subsea Equipment & ROV Services

A new generation of subsea equipment Recognising the steady growth rate of the subsea sector and its continual need for resources to increase its infrastructure, Motive Offshore, a leading marine equipment specialist, worked closely with ROV and construction specialists to design a range of subsea winches in early 2013. It was this moment that signalled the beginning of a new generation of subsea equipment made available by the marine equipment specialist. With operators’ safety at the forefront, the Motive team used the knowledge gathered from years’ experience to achieve the optimum design of the subsea winches, and today, as research and development has continued, the firm is now well equipped to provide assistance in major subsea projects and meet the requirements of its customers. Including unique safety features, Motive Offshore’s subsea winches incorporate an integral crash frame that acts as a protection barrier whereby the winch is fully enclosed and safe from damage. The frame also acts as a clump weight to weigh down the winch to the seabed and its frame is designed with universal coil to compensate for hydrostatic pressure.

With an ROV grab rail and a hydraulically operated slew bearing, the ROV can rotate the winch to allow for easier repositioning of the winch wire exit on the seabed. The winch can rotate 270 degrees in total, making it simple to manoeuvre in complex conditions. Another unique aspect to the subsea winch range is the option to have a deployable anchor that embeds into the seabed. As the subsea winches are operable in water depths up to 3000m, the anchor acts as a stabiliser for support and ensures minimal movement occurs to allow optimum pulling application, ideal for commissioning and decommissioning projects, for example, when deploying and positioning subsea flowlines.

Subsea winches in action

Motive Offshore was recently awarded a contract by Technip to supply subsea winches for BP’s Quad 204 project in the UK North Sea. Located West of Shetland, Motive’s subsea winches are being used for the subsea relocation of flexible riser tails to facilitate connection to the new seabed flowlines, as part of the project to replace the Schiehallion FPSO (Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading) and subsea infrastructure.

“We have to ensure that throughout this project everything is done safely and in a timely manner. We want to complete the job as efficiently as possible without compromising on the safe design and quality of build and this is why we have selected Motive Offshore’s subsea winches.”

Motive Offshore has a standard range of subsea equipment that is continuously being developed to respond to industry trends and help overcome operational challenges. Some of the complimentary subsea products offered include a full range of subsea clump weights up to 25Te, hydraulic release shackles and a launch and recovery system (LARS) for subsea equipment. Motive strives to obtain optimum operational functionality with its equipment, which is always supported by customer feedback, in which small modifications and enhancements are made to the equipment when necessary.

Saab Seaeye’s Falcon to assist inspection of Guri Dam in Venezuela Venezuela has selected a Falcon remotely operated vehicle (ROV) developed by Saab Seaeye to carry out integral inspection work and a thorough survey of infrastructure and turbines of the Guri Dam. Guri Dam supports one of the largest reservoirs in the world and the work is underway to extend its life by another 30 years. The dam, which is located 100km upstream of the Caroni River in Necuima Canyon, Orinoco, was constructed in 1960s. To perform a detailed analysis of the Guri Dam infrastructure, federal authorities in Venezuela have chosen to fit the Falcon with an Imagenex 881A-GS sonar and Applied Acoustic’s Easytrak positional location system, which have been developed by Symphotic TII and MB Services. The sonar and navigation systems will allow Falcon to scan images even while swimming around in any rotation. Symphotic TII operations manager Jack Roberts said: “This particular set-up has never before been adopted for a Falcon and has the added advantage of being simple to integrate in the field at the kind of remote location found at a hydro installation.”

Falcon will also be fitted with Lyyn real-time video enhancement system to enable self-optimisation of the image at 25 times a second, thereby providing clear pictures from underwater. Equipped with five thrusters, the ROV will offer the benefits of easy manoeuvrability and steadiness in unstable water. The customised system to be deployed for the Venezuelan hydro project will feature a special trailer and winch, developed by MB Services, to make it capable of working in difficult-to-access locations.

The ROV features intelligent control architecture, which enables intermigration of complex systems.

Ceona join forces with Interoil Angola Ceona, SURF contractor with heavy subsea construction capabilities, has expanded its West African reach after entering into a strategic partnership with Interoil Angola Lda. The partnership will see Interoil Angola, which is a key player in offshore support vessel management in West Africa,

support Ceona’s plans to expand into Angola.

“Interoil Angola is a wellestablished company and an approved supplier by the major operators in the region. It is also one of the few Angolan organisations that has a licence for vessel management. Partnering with them enables Ceona to officially enter the Angolan market, where our flagship Ceona Amazon vessel is highly suited for work offshore, and at the same time continue to grow our strong footprint across West Africa.”

market, specialising in full-service engineering, pipelay and construction project management and execution. The company has already established an impressive track record which has seen it expand into West Africa, the Gulf of Mexico and Brazil. The ground-breaking Ceona Amazon is a powerful, purpose built hybrid vessel that can execute complex logistical projects in remote, harsh and deepwater territories. Designed to deliver full flexible or full rigid pipelay, she can change easily and quickly between each mode and is extremely weather resilient. With a deck area of 4,600m2 and the ability to carry 9,500te of pipe on deck and in her two holds, the Amazon is custom designed for full deepwater field development needs. Her two 400te cranes, which have been designed to operate in tandem to support work in water depths of up to 3,000m (10,000 ft), enable her to easily install large manifolds and heavy subsea structures. This combined with the vertical-lay pipelay system featuring a top tension of 600te, capable of laying rigid pipe to 3,000m (10,000 ft) water depth make her a vessel of choice for all deepwater field development needs.

Patented Subsea and ROV Hooks from Nautilus Rigging Nautilus Rigging (UK) Ltd are internationally recognised as the leading innovators in safe lifting solutions as the manufacturers and suppliers of the Patented Nautilus Hook™. The company achieved this recognition by focusing their design criteria to eliminate known industry concerns with respect to the inherent safety hazards incorporated in traditional style lifting hooks. The innovative Nautilus Hook design was awarded the prestigious American Society of Mechanical Engineers - Best Mechanical Engineering Award at the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston where the unique, patented, safety features were deemed a tangible step change in lifting safety coupled with real global potential to reduce risk in the workplace in all lifting operations were cited by the judges as the deciding factors in awarding Nautilus Hooks this highest accolade.

www.sosmagazine.biz

“As with our Topside Hooks range the introduction of our Nautilus Subsea range has proved extremely popular with the major ROV and Subsea contractors who have been quick to recognise the unique safety benefits that our positive locking ROV hooks provide, where the patented “positive” locking mechanism eliminates the risk of unintentional release which is a known and inherent design hazard associated with the use of traditional style “snap on” ROV hooks. The positive locking function of the Nautilus ROV hook ensures that load integrity is maintained at all times until released by the ROV manipulator. This unique and patented function provides operators the cost efficient solution to eliminate the risks of incurring expensive downtime and/or equipment damage that invariably results from any unplanned, or uncontrolled, release of the load that is a well known risk associated with all traditional style ROV hooks”

Managing Director, Mr Bill Toon

Subsea training centre revamps ROV and Closed Bell training courses Courses, Training & Certification

New modules added with support from industry. Students undertaking ROV Pilot Technician and Closed Bell training at the Fort William-based subsea facility, The Underwater Centre, are to benefit from newly revamped courses providing even more contextual modules. The Centre has been working with industry to identify areas of its ROV and Closed Bell training suites which can be enhanced and courses for the remainder of 2015 will reflect this with major developments across the board. Students on the three-week ROV Pilot Technician Course will now benefit from entirely unique training elements including time on the Centre’s Loch Sunart ROV vessel and training in the ROV electrical and mechanical workshops, features unavailable at any other facility. Loch Sunart is the Centre’s work class ROV support vessel fitted with an operational work class ROV, and this will provide students with invaluable first-hand experience in all areas of ROV operations and mobilisation, from launch and recovery to operating a suite of ROV navigation sensors as part of in-water practical exercises. In addition to this, the Centre has overhauled the seven week Premium ROV Course to include a condensed and more focused electronics module as well as introducing courses covering High Voltage and Electrical Safety Awareness, T4: Introduction to Titan 4 Manipulator Training, Fibre Optics, Working at Height, and experience using our VMAX Triton XL Simulator. For the remainder of 2015 the HSE Closed Bell Courses will include a new practical introduction to using an SPHL (SelfPropelled Hyperbaric Lifeboat), practical introduction to bolt tensioning, Kirby Morgan Hat Users Course and the IMCA Diver Medic ticket, helping add to the competency of its students when they enter the industry. These additional modules, which have been highlighted as important by industry organisations, ensure that the training provided keeps up with current practice, so when students leave they are familiar with key equipment.

Steve Ham, the Centre’s General Manager, believes that by continuing to update and revise the courses they are providing students with the best possible contextual training throughout their careers.

“We have spent considerable time reviewing our ROV and Closed Bell offering and with the help of industry we have been able to identify areas where we could strengthen our training packages,” What sets The Underwater Centre apart from other training establishments is that all of the vital practical activities undertaken occur within the context of real systems and equipment, in real environments, under real conditions and with real safety considerations at the forefront, all of which have a direct correlation to the real offshore environment. This opportunity is unequalled anywhere else in the world.” The award-winning Centre, which trains students from all over the world, is also now able to provide pre-course support for students who may have concerns over their level of English. Fedrick Ukab Labong, from Malaysia, took part in the three week Closed Bell Course after having an initial chat via Skype with the Centre’s Diver Training Authority. “We realised our English was weak but the Centre staff and management were very helpful to assist us to learn the correct pronunciation of words, and even put a huge effort to ensure we received and met HSE standard for our Closed Bell and IMCA Assistant Life Support Technician (ALST) certification in English. “I would highly recommend The Underwater Centre to other colleagues or friends, in Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, or Indonesia, to pursue their dream of working in the oil and gas industry in the very near future. In fact we had heard of the Centre a very long time ago but were afraid our English was not strong enough to sign up to their courses.

www.sosmagazine.biz

“However, after getting our badge, we realised having great English was not really a major problem because the Centre staff had methods to deal with weak English language spoken and improve our English so we could pass the assessments.”

56

The Underwater Centre is a purpose-built subsea training and trials facility and is based on the shore of a seawater loch, well sheltered by the surrounding mountains. The Centre’s unique location allows it to provide year-round training and testing in an open-water environment, while still being centrally located in the largest town in the Scottish Highlands. With access to depths of over 100 metres, it is the ideal location to perform realistic and industry-specific saturation and air diver and ROV pilot technician training, as well as providing a convenient location for subsea equipment trials.

Courses, Training & Certification

Leading the technology revolution Smart, engaging, technologyled training is at the heart of keeping the 1.5million workers involved in oil and gas exploration and production activities worldwide safe. Access to the right knowledge at the right time is critical for today’s employees. But the way in which people learn is changing and that, combined with the increasingly global nature of the highly mobile oil and gas talent pool, means training organisations are constantly reviewing their courses to ensure they meet the needs of the workforce. Learning technology services provider Atlas Knowledge is leading the away in achieving this by taking a dynamic approach which puts people at the centre of the solution. With a wide range of award-winning methodologies and innovative technologies designed to allow oil and gas workers to develop their skills in the most efficient and effective way, Atlas’ goal is to make learning easy and interesting – vital tools in helping the industry reduce risk and increase competency.

www.sosmagazine.biz

“The primary purpose of training is to help personnel

58

acquire, and maintain, the skills and knowledge needed to perform a job to a defined standards. In other words, training should be instrumental in developing and sustaining competence. Technology now touches virtually every part of the oil and gas industry and when it comes to learning and ensuring competency, innovative use of technology can bring learning to life, connect people across all four corners of the world and significantly raise the bar in terms of improving workforce competency.”

Commercial Director Kevin Short.

Indeed, the combination of increasing bandwidth, improvements in video compression and cheaper technology means that audio visual platforms are becoming a more viable option for the oil and gas industry. Atlas took this approach when creating the newly revised Minimum Industry Safety Training (MIST) course which launched earlier this year.

“People don’t want to be bound by the confines of a training room, they want more realistic scenarios, more interaction and more knowledge-testing,” explained Mr Short. “We transformed MIST into a multiplatform, multi-browser solution accessible on tablets and iPads which utilises real-life videos and photography to challenge and engage the workforce much more. “We spent a long time filming at onshore and offshore facilities, as well as at the heliport, in order to create familiar videoled scenarios in place of 3D models. This is how people want to learn and the results tell us it’s a more effective way of helping them retain the knowledge.” It is this understanding of the needs of the workforce, plus one of the largest portfolios of skills and mandatory content focused on the oil and gas industry, which last year saw 1,300 Atlas Knowledge courses accessed every day in 98 countries around the world - the equivalent of one per minute. It is the backbone of what saw them help 450,000 learners to maintain their skills and increase industry competency worldwide.

The way in which we do business has changed radically since the last major update to ISO 9001 in 2000 and by placing more emphasis on leadership, for example, ISO 9001:2015 will drive greater involvement in your organisation’s quality management system by your senior management team through the alignment of the organisation’s stated strategic goals with those for the achievement of customer requirements.

At QMI Scotland Limited we have been following the process of the standards development to ensure that we continue to provide our clients with the auditing, consultancy and training support to make the transition to the new standards as smooth and seamless as possible. If you already have a certified quality or environmental system we can come in and talk through your requirements for transitioning to certification to the 2015 version; alternatively we can provide in-house or public transition courses for your personnel.

Equally the changes to ISO 14001 have been driven by the need to recognise that organisations are operating under increasing pressure from the legislature and stakeholders to address their environmental impact; consequently the changes will make

OPITO International has secured a contract with the Ministry of Oil and Gas in Oman. The global oil and gas training standards body is working with the government, the Oman Society for Petroleum Services (OPAL) and employers to improve the delivery of training that will ensure the country has a skilled and safe oil and gas workforce. This will have positive contribution effects on the economy in Oman by creating greater employment opportunities for Omanis. With a track record in helping oil and gas provinces to build indigenous workforces to exploit their oil and gas revenues, OPITO is working on a phased plan that will provide the Omani Government with a sustainable solution to the employment needs

of its people and to the demands of its growing oil and gas industry. The first phase is an analysis of the current provision of vocational and non-vocational training throughout Oman. OPITO will be visiting training centres and colleges to identify the standard of training and then provide recommendations on how technical training provision can be improved to deliver a framework of qualifications which will meet current and future skills demands and improve competence in the operations and maintenance activities associated with the extraction of hydrocarbons.

After three years of studying sponsored by Global Marine, including spending nine months aboard various vessels in the company fleet, Joss, Marcus, Ron and William qualified as Electrical Technical Officers (ETO) this summer. Since then the four ETOs have spent recent weeks within the training school at our head office in Chelmsford to gain further skills and knowledge in order to qualify as Junior Systems Technicians (JST). This will give the officers the capability to work in cable jointing as well as piloting Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) whilst at sea.

YOUR SUBSEA TRIALS AND TRAINING SOLUTION • New work class ROV training in a contextual experience environment. • Industry leading diver and ROV training, focussed on customer needs. • Extensive trials and training facilities replicating offshore conditions. • Over 40 years experience in high quality subsea trials and training. • Sea water environment with depths to 150m.

The additional training has included learning practical skills in splicing, jointing and using the X-Ray Camera whilst getting to grips with a wide range of technical specifications and procedures. This dual skilling is what sets these officers apart from other qualified cadets, enabling them to operate in both roles – ETO and JST. This has advantages all round; allowing better utilisation of the workforce in the areas of greatest demand, but also giving the seafarers a greater range of skills and experience, and a platform for their future careers.

Working with people not robots! A crucial element to running a competent company is to understand the Human Factors involved. You can have the best systems and processes in place, fantastic quality training for all, a robust assessment process and super sturdy verifying procedures – but you may still face challenges due to the people you work with. These challenges are often broken down into three elements; complacency, rule breaking and human weakness. Long standing employees or those who are very experienced in their job, may become complacent over time - not completing tasks to the full standard and taking shortcuts. This can be a hard habit to break, as experience mixed with stubbornness can be a cocktail for bad practice. The second category - rule breaking – cannot be explained quite so simply. We may choose to break the rules out of frustration, laziness or simply because we believe we can do it better our own way.

Human weakness refers to anything related to our emotions and physical state; a separation or divorce perhaps, bereavement, illness – perhaps even something as simple as not getting enough sleep. Whatever reason, there are ways to tackle these issues. Communication is key - explaining the reasons why certain rules need to be followed can help us not to dismiss them as frivolous plus listening to suggestions from staff members regarding improving process’s and passing them to the appropriate place for action can sometimes be all that is needed. Making checklists of jobs can combat tired or forgetful employees and having a good, open support system in place for emotional stress will help employees feel less alone. Competence testing itself can be enough to make someone review their own practices, something they may not usually do. Human factors are unavoidable, but with proper management, they can be a benefit to your business. After all, attributes such as ambition, excitement and perseverance come from the human element within us too.

Radiolink Plus load cell for Zone 0 explosive environments Straightpoint has launched an ATEX and IECEx version of its most popular product the Radiolink Plus wireless load cell. The explosion proof product will be assembled on a brand new production line ensuring that the force measurement, load monitoring and suspended weighing load cell manufacturer can continue to provide quick delivery to job sites around the world. Meeting Zone 0 classification (an area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is present continuously or for long periods) is unprecedented in below-the-hook force measurement technology with other suppliers providing products for use in areas categorised only as hazardous as Zone 2 (an area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation and, if it occurs, will only exist for a short time).

Roshan Divakaran, Design Engineer at Straightpoint, who has overseen the product’s development, said: “We don’t believe there is another wireless load cell on the market that is Zone 0 certified, which makes this a tremendously significant product launch for the sectors that require such technologies. The requirements of the oil and gas industry were a primary focus throughout the design and certification process.” The criteria of ATEX and IECEx are broadly similar, although the former is widely accepted throughout Europe, while the latter is required in many other global markets. The ATEX version of the load cell and wireless handheld unit contains several safety components that permit its use in Zone 0 environments. A separate storage area has been created at Straightpoint’s Havant, UK headquarters and all production personnel have been specially trained in the assembly of the explosion proof units.

“We made a decision in early 2014 to introduce the benefits of our best selling product—the Radiolink Plus— to industries and applications where products that meet the requirements of ATEX are required to work in extremely hazardous environments. I am delighted for Roshan and the team that we have executed our ambitious plan to launch the product by the end of 2015. It has been one of the biggest development projects in the history of the company and the interest we’ve already received suggests that our new production line will be kept extremely busy.” Straightpoint Director David Ayling

Divakaran, working in close collaboration with the Sira Certification Service, an independent certification body, has been working on the ATEX and IECEx project since he joined the company last year.

www.sosmagazine.biz

He said: “Developing a Zone 0 product has been very challenging given the extent of the standards and safety regulations that we have had to meet as we produced documents, prototypes and the final product. Our goal was to meet this criteria whilst making minimal changes to an already excellent, well-renowned product; we feel we have been successful in achieving that.” Ayling concluded: “A significant amount of our business comes from the oil and gas sector. The explosion proof certification will vastly increase the scope of application we can serve and provides our distributors with unique selling points both in terms of the classification level and our ability to deliver the product within a few days.” For further information, please E-Mail:

New portable multi-gas detector features innovative technologies for enhanced accuracy, reliability and ease of use •

Key Facts:

Advanced features in Crowcon T4 detector provide improved safety combined with a low cost of ownership

A single unit monitors and alerts users to unsafe levels of oxygen as well as multiple toxic and flammable gases

Rugged, IP65- and IP67-rated housing offers enhanced reliability in harsh environments

Crowcon a leading manufacturer of specialist gas detection equipment announces the launch of a new portable multigas detector which integrates innovative features, providing advanced protection for employees working in harsh environments and minimising the cost of ownership through faster servicing. The T4 detector will enable companies to ensure compliance to safety standards by protecting employees against unsafe levels of the most commonly monitored gas combination carbon monoxide (CO), oxygen (O2), hydrogen sulphide (H2S), and a range of flammable gases.

The clip-on filter plates make it faster and easier for users to replace the gas filter, which is an essential safety precaution in dirtier environments to prevent the detector’s sensors from being compromised by dirt, dust or contamination in the working environment. The T4’s ease of use also includes one-button operation which reduces the amount of training required and is very easy to operate while wearing gloves. Finally, the T4 achieves an extended battery life of over 20 hours from a single charge, making it possible for users to complete one or more shifts before recharging.

“Despite its advanced features and functionality, the T4 offers enhanced protection and compliance to safety standards from a unit which is highly cost-effective to install and to maintain,”

Nick Dajda, Crowcon Business Development Manager for Portable Products.

Among the key features of the T4 are Crowcon’s +ve Safety™ status indicator; easy one-button operation; clip-on filter plates, and a novel TWA resume facility . www.sosmagazine.biz

+ve Safety™ is Crowcon’s simple ‘traffic light’ status indicator, which at a glance, allows the user to check the compliance status of the unit without having to read and interpret the data shown on the detector’s display screen. Time-weighted average (TWA) resume is an innovative new feature ensuring TWA logged doses of toxic gases are not reset when the unit is shutdown, for example during a break, reducing the risk of worker overexposure to toxic gases.

Bellows Seal Valve ideal for challenging applications Liquids handling specialists Pump Engineering offer the extensive range of Badger Meter control valves which enable the precise control of liquids and gases in the most challenging applications and demanding environments. A good example of this is their range of valves available in a bellows seal design, such as their Type 808 bellows sealed globe valve. This is an ideal choice for critical, zero-fugitive emission, highpurity or high-vacuum applications where the potential for hazardous emissions has to be eliminated. The bellows forms a flexible static seal that is leak-free, as long as the integrity of the bellows remains intact. However,

should the valve fail, a set of back-up packing allows the valve to continue to operate safely until repairs can be made. The valve is available in sizes ¼”, ½”, ¾” and 1” and standard features include interchangeable trim sets, bellows packing, PTFE CV ring back-up packing and PTFE bellows gasket. The trim characteristics available are; linear, equal percentage, quick-open, or double taper. A range of accessories to enable the valve to suit specific application requirements includes positioners, filter regulators, gauges, I/P limit switches and solenoid valves. Badger Type 808 Bellows Valves can be widely used in industrial applications including research and process plants on liquids, gases or steam.

Finning Cat reman parts’ kits offer a sound investment at a lower price Finning, the sole supplier of Cat® engines in the UK & Ireland, has reduced the price of its genuine remanufactured spare parts’ kits to help customers realise even better value over the lifetime of their engine assets. Six new ‘kits’ are now available to customers requiring an in-frame, top end or major overhaul in the marine, power generation and oil and gas markets on any Cat or MaK engine. They include parts groups for turbochargers, cylinder heads, injectors and nozzles, cylinder packs, fuel, water and air filters and gaskets – all of which are available at a lower price to help companies improve their ownership costs.

Bob Bain, Parts Logistics Manager from the company’s oil and gas division explains: “Businesses are faced with a common challenge; to reduce expenditure while maintaining equipment performance. Although spending less, by purchasing a thirdparty replacement part, can seem to make good commercial sense and will deliver immediate, bottom-line savings it can have a longer-term impact on reliability.

“Choosing Cat remanufactured parts, which are built to deliver the same performance as an original component, can cost customers up to 60 per cent less. This offers an ideal alternative for businesses requiring the same high-quality component without compromising efficiency.” A recent study from Caterpillar examined the case for using manufacturers’ spares and the cost implications of selecting non-genuine alternatives. It found that fitting the correctly specified fuel filter could increase injector life by over 45 per cent. Taking a typical 16-cylinder engine this investment could protect critical engine components worth in excess of £30,000.

Sonomatic introduces DRS, an innovative ultrasonic inspection technique Making corrosion mapping possible on previously uninspectable assets

A custom DRS system, designed and developed by the company, excites the steel with a range of low ultrasonic frequencies that pass through challenging coatings.

Product Spotlight

Sonomatic, a market leader in the provision of advanced automated ultrasonic inspection services, introduces Dynamic Response Spectroscopy (DRS): an innovative ultrasonic inspection technique for corrosion mapping through challenging coatings, where conventional UT is ineffective.

The steel responds, vibrating at natural frequencies related to the local thicknesses. Using advanced signal processing algorithms, these frequencies are extracted and used to determine the steel thickness profile. DRS is available from August 2015 using the company’s proven topside and subsea deployment tools, Nautilus and ROV-iT, making corrosion mapping possible on previously uninspectable assets. Sonomatic will demonstrate the DRS tool at Offshore Europe 2015, stand 3E190, as well as highlighting other recent developments including the new Internal Caisson Tool.

Low maintenance, high efficiency liquid ring vacuum pumps have many uses The wide range of liquid ring vacuum pumps available from EuroVacuum Products provide efficient liquid transfer with fit and forget levels of maintenance. Liquid ring vacuum pumps work on a similar principle to a rotary vane compressor or rotary vane pump, so have only one moving part, the impeller, which is the basis of their reliable operation. Further enhancing their maintenance credentials, there is no seal to wear; instead a pressure seal is created by the

pumped liquid as it is stirred into a vortex. The low cost, low maintenance characteristics of liquid ring vacuum pumps makes them ideal for duties where operating cycles are long and continuous, where reliability is a must and unscheduled maintenance stoppages would be expensive in terms of lost production. Typical uses include steam turbines, papermaking machines, groundwater management, vacuum distillation and vapour recovery. The pumps come in a range of sizes, from

laboratory scale to those used in heavy industries and are available as single-stage or double-stage units. Three and morestage units are also possible, although less common. EuroVacuum Products supplies both single and double-stage pumps, the former producing vacuum pressures to 33mbar, and the latter to 0.5mbar. Both are available in monoblock, lantern and bare shaft versions and in a range of sizes. info@eurovacuumproducts.co.uk
