Mayor to deliver ‘State Of Our City’ address via youTube Live on Jan. 14 Two-term Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley will deliver his eighth and final “State of Our City” Mayoral Address from event co-sponsor Community Bank of Elmhurst’s second-floor Hammersmith Community Room on Thursday, Jan. 14, at 8 a.m. via the City’s YouTube page at youtube.com/ elmhursttv. The Elmhurst Chamber of Com-

merce and Industry has co-sponsored the Mayoral Address since 1998 and CBE has served as the host site since 2000. Typically videotaped before an audience of 150 businesspeople, the annual event will still be rebroadcast via videotape on cable television on Comcast Channel 6 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99 on Sundays at

7 p.m. and Tuesday at 5 p.m. starting January 24. Mayor Morley will apprise the Elmhurst community on the many challenges and successes of 2020 in the face of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic and access the municipality’s economic outlook for 2021 and beyond his tenure. “This is traditionally among the

Chamber’s best attended Membership Breakfasts,” said John R. Quigley, ECCI President and CEO, “and we will still provide valuable insight for viewers, but without the effect from a standing-room-only crowd.” A successful businessman himself who has worked with Fortune 500 companies, Mayor Morley is a Managing Member at Crown River Part-

ners, a broker and advisor to small businesses, and the Principal at Every Door Direct Media, a consulting, marketing and print agency. Both of his businesses are Chamber members. “After Steve leaves office, I will miss him half-jokingly clarifying at Chamber events whether he is wearing his Mayor’s tie or his businessman’s tie,” stated Quigley.

Unemployment benefits fraud rampant across the state Elmhurst residents victims as well By Dee Longfellow FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT

Readers may have noticed there have recently been a rash of incidents known by police as, “Unemployment benefits identity theft.” Record numbers of Illinoisans have filed for unemployment since the COVID-19 pandemic started in March. On the flip side, however, hundreds of thousands of people in Illinois—among them Elmhurst residents—have fallen victim to fraudulent unemployment claims through the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES). According to the Elmhurst Police Reports, since Aug. 4, there were 372 incidents of identify theft for purposes of fraudulently applying for unemployment benefits. Just recently—in the reports received the week of Dec. 22—there were 94 incidents. And that is just in Elmhurst. Elmhurst Police Chief Michael

Ruth said incidents were running pretty rampant not only in Illinois, but also throughout the nation. “What we’re seeing is more applications for unemployment benefits and that’s where they have personal identifiers, they know where the person works, then they file an unemployment claim,” Ruth explained. “The state of Illinois is supposed to verify. They’re expected to call the company and make sure the person once worked there and is, in fact, now unemployed. “We don’t know the common thread for that. We don’t know how to track [whether that’s being done or not].” The IDES said that as of late November, more than 212,000 fraudulent claims for unemployment had been filed since March 1. Appellate Court affirms 90-year sentence in 1993 double homicide

On Monday, Jan. 4, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced that the Second District Appellate Court of Illinois has affirmed the 90-year sentence of Sean Helgesen for the 1993 murders of Peter and Diana Robles. On April 17, 1993, Helgesen and Eric Robles, the victims’ son, arrived at the Robles home. Once inside the home, the pair stabbed and slashed Peter 22 times in the face, neck, chest and arms in a downstairs washroom. Helgesen and Robles then went to the main floor of the home where they encountered Diana, on crutches due to polio, and proceeded to stab and slash her 29 times in the face, neck, chest and arms. Peter died at the home while Diana died a short time later at a local hospital. Following the murders, the pair left the home. In 1995, a jury found Helgesen, who was 17 years-old at the time, guilty on ten counts of murder. He was sentenced to natural life in prison. Following a Supreme Court decision in Miller v. Alabama in 2012, which prohibited mandatory sentences of natural life without the possibility of parole for juveniles, Judge George Bakalis resentenced Helgesen to serve two 90-year sentences concurrently. “The overriding consideration in my mind was the offense itself, seriousness of the offense, the nature of the offense,” Bakalis said. “I know it’s a severe sentence. It’s a very severe crime.” Helgesen appealed this sentence, arguing that the sentences were unconstitutional amounting to a de facto life sentence. The Appellate Court however, disagreed with Helgesen’s assertions holding that the sentences were extended-term sentences and were justified by the fact that Diana was physically disabled, which is an extended-termqualifying factor. In its decision, the Appellate Court noted that Courts are not prohibited from sentencing a juvenile to a life sentence, either natural or de facto, and may do so if “the trial court determines that the defendant’s conduct showed irretrievable depravity, permanent incorrigibility or irreparable corruption beyond the possibility of rehabilitation.” “I would like to thank the Appellate Court for their thorough analysis of this case and their finding that the sentences imposed are indeed appropriate,” Berlin said. “The brutal, pre-meditated murder of Peter and Diana Robles is among the worst crimes DuPage County has ever had to endure and shook the entire community to its core, the reverberations of which can still be felt today. The Appellate Court’s decision ensures that Mr. Helgesen will be held accountable for his actions to the fullest extent of the law.” Due to sentencing guidelines in place at the time, Helgesen is required to serve 50% of his sentence.

LIGHTER, THINNER, FLATTER LENSES For those with a high degree of farsightedness, “aspheric lenses” offer some advantages over conventional eyeglass lenses. Because conventional lenses with plus corrections for farsightedness are thicker at the center, they protrude from the eyeglass frame. This central protrusion is responsible for making the lenses heavier than those for nearsighted corrections. They also carry the cosmetic disadvantage of making the eyes appear larger. Aspheric lenses, on the other hand, feature a special design that utilizes constantly changing curves to make the needed correction. Their smart design enables them to offer farsighted individuals lenses that are much slimmer and lighter, and magnify the eyes less, than conventional lenses. See the difference that aspherics can make when having your lens prescription filled. Aspheric designs are available in single vision lenses for the correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, and in progressive lenses, bifocals, and trifocals for presbyopia. Although most aspheric lenses are made from high-index materials, they are available in regular plastic, too. SKOWRON EYE CARE is able to provide you with a wide range of lens options. To learn more, please call us today. At Skowron Eye Care, our mission is your vision. P.S. Aspheric lenses have a slimmer profile for virtually all prescriptions.

The new year for Andrea Stodola, owner of Essential Skin & Beauty (ESB) in Elmhurst City Centre, includes cleaning, packing, storing, and also brings along a dose of reality that sadly, many businesses are feeling after the 2020 pandemic has forced an about face and shuttered doors. “I’m not going to be the first to close or the last to close,” said Stodola, an esthetician who opened the Elmhurst spa in 2009. “It [the closing] is not a total shock because so many businesses are struggling, but many people have reached out and are genuinely sad we are closing our doors. “Clients are wondering what my next move is, and I need time to figure that out, but it’s been nice to hear from people, it gives me validation.” Stodola chose Elmhurst to open her business because of its proximity to trains and highways, and its “cute downtown area.” The once-thriving spa, which offers custom facials, massages, waxing and makeup services, was hit hard from the Illinois mitigation orders and hadn’t been able to offer many services since the pandemic hit. “I am sad that ESB will no longer serve Elmhurst,” said longtime client and 40-year Elmhurst resident Pat Bartler. “It’s disappointing to see the loss of small businesses in our community…clients should be in a position to decide for themselves if they are comfortable receiving services. Residents will now need to travel farther and support similar businesses in other towns in the future, as restrictions are lifted.” Stodola felt her clients’ support and did all she could to not let the restrictions get under her skin. “We saw the writing on the wall and we preemptively stopped services, not knowing how long it would last,” she said. “Lots of people were still ordering product and I had enough to pay rent and take care of overhead stuff. “We were originally approved for the PPP (Payroll Protection Program), but it wasn’t necessarily laid out for our type of business…because my employees are hourly plus commission and tips. Trying to figure out what would be best for the employees was challenging, so we thought we could handle it within, and it might be better for them to be on unemployment. “I was afraid I’d do something wrong or have to pay taxes, so I ended up giving the PPP back.” The Elmhurst startup did benefit from a DuPage County grant program that helped with rent for a few months. “I thought if I could at least pay my rent, it’d be okay,” she said. “We were able to reopen in June with limited services.” Reconfiguring the spa’s layout and services took a little bit of time, Stodola said. “The guidelines and mitigation tiers were changing often, but it was nice to see clients back in the spa,” she said. Unfortunately, right before the holidays, just when people want to have facials to look their best, the State of Illinois mitigation tiers started climbing and services had to be halted again. “That really took the wind out of our sails,” Stodola said. “The closings

Letters to the editor Elmhurst Art Museum thanks community for support

As the year 2020 ends, the Elmhurst Art Museum and its Board of Directors want to thank the community for inspiring us. Together we were able to find ways to spark creativity in our community despite the pandemic. For example: • More than 200 of our Art-ivity kits were donated to local childcare and community organizations; • More than 200 people participated in our You Are Beautiful promotion which raised funds for the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital and spread positivity throughout multiple neighborhoods; • More than 160 children and adults sent us postcards for our Art in the Post exhibit; • Nearly 100 people made Wright-inspired designs in our parking lot for Chalk the Lot; and, • More than 200 people attend our virtual fundraiser SIP & Support. We could not have accomplished projects like these without your support. Thank you for your resilience, resourcefulness, and generosity. All in-person visits have been suspended until further notice due to the governor’s new directives for the state of Illinois. While socially distanced, our community can still connect to each other through art, education, and architecture. Visit the Museum From Home page on our web site to experience past and present exhibitions online and to be guided through interpretive hands-on activities. 100+ Women Who Care thanks participants As 2020 ends, we want to thank you for your commitment to the mission of 100+ Women Who Care. Thanks to you, we have collectively donated $66,150 to six organizations who serve those in Elmhurst

and surrounding communities. Here’s a recap on how your donations made a difference: • Elmhurst Heritage Foundation invested in technology and new programming to deliver virtual offerings to a staggering number of youth and adult learners. • United Community Concerns, Elmhurst Walk-in Assistance Network and Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry provided food and responded to basic needs early in the pandemic. • Access Sports purchased sports equipment and delivered creative virtual connection to young athletes with disabilities. • Family Shelter Service acquired much needed technology (computers, tablets, data plans) to provide lifesaving connection for those experiencing domestic violence. This year has shown us more than ever that helping others around us is so very important. We are grateful for each nomination, each $100 check, and for the incredible people and organizations that work so hard in our community. Also, we appreciate each of you for continuing to believe in the power of the giving circle model to make a difference in our community. It is likely we will have another cycle as we have the past three quarters, with presentations and voting via email. Please give thought to submitting a 501c3. We will be in touch in early January. May the new year be one of good health, togetherness and a continued spirit of giving. 100+ Women Who Care Amy Allen, Betsy Aldred, Jean Carlquist, Charlotte Mushow Suzanne Werle

Reader asks: Why is hospital president first to receive vaccine? Regarding the COVID 19 vaccination story on p. 4 of the Dec. 24 issue of the Elmhurst Independent: I thought that hospital staff working directly with COVID patients and nursing home residents were to be the first recipients of the vaccine. It is highly inappropriate for the hospital president to receive the first dose. Does she interact directly with COVID patients? More appropriate would have been a nurse who cares for COVID patients. Slices of life

Finding the meaning of life on aisle 10 Today a strange man approached me. Well, he wasn’t actually strange as in green ears and three arms; he was just strange to me. In other words, I didn’t know the guy. But there he was, walking straight in my direction, giving obvious eye contact, in aisle 12 at the grocery store – like we were old buds. He was an elderly gentleman, perhaps old enough to be my father, so I wasn’t too threatened. Just surprised. And perhaps curious. It felt odd. I looked to my left and to my right. Was he really approaching me or was there another person who served as the object of his purposeful gait toward my social-distanced, facecovered self? No one was near me (or him). No one else could be the source of his attention. I stood, feeling a bit trapped, on aisle 12 pretending to examine the ingredients on the label of a pickle jar. There was no escape path. I waited for the ball (or in this case the pickle) to drop. “Excuse me,” he said. At least he was a polite sort. I looked up from my jar. He was shorter than I’d thought. And thinner. Definitely old enough to be my dad, in fact he sort of resembled him. Somehow I found that comforting. “I’m wondering if you could help me,” he continued. “Do you know where I can find the salt? We are out of salt and my wife wants me to bring some home, and I’ll be darned it I can find it anywhere.” At those last words he threw his hands in the air to emphasize his plight. I breathed a sigh (of relief). Salt.

By

JILL PERTLER Contributor

This guy needed salt. It was a simple request. In fact, while standing near the pickles we were only two aisles over from spices on aisle 10. I not only provided directions, but I walked with him to make sure he chose the iodized version. Labels can be so tricky these days – as can goiters. This isn’t the first time I’ve been approached at the store for insight or information – and I even make it a point not to wear blue or red to any store for fear of being mistaken for an employee. I guess I just have that look about me. I like to think of it as a look of intelligence, but knowing where the iodized salt is doesn’t exactly require intelligence so much as it requires familiarity. I am familiar with various grocery aisles. I guess it shows. I’m not sure if this something to be proud of. Let me restate that: I am sure this is definitely not something to be proud of. But it comes with experience. And life. And love. And those are all things one should definitely be proud of. Experience. I know aisle 12 from aisle 10 like the back of my hand because I’ve had my family’s back for years and years. I anticipate their food

consumption needs and fulfill them. Over and over again. It’s actually one of the more appreciated jobs a mom can complete – filling the freezer with edibles. Corn dogs and sliders are valued more than glass cleaner or light bulbs. Life. Let’s contemplate that huge subject. Life has taught me to attempt to understand the needs of others. An elderly man approaching me at the grocery store is not an intrusion or irritation. It is simply an elderly man needing advice. Life should dictate that anyone in my situation give him the 30 seconds required to provide the help he needs. This should be done without angst. Someday we will all be older, and in need of salt. Finally let’s tackle the subject of love. It’s the biggest one of all. If you can’t operate under the guise of experience or life, please do so under the umbrella of love. It is the greatest gift we can give anyone – spouse, best friend, child, stranger or anyone in between. If someone random reaches out to you for whatever reason and you answer in the name of love, you have the experience required to have this thing called life figured out. It is all about human connections and relationships and giving people what they need when they do or don’t ask for it. Especially during a pandemic. Especially and definitely when it involves salt (the iodized kind) on aisle 10. Jill Pertler is an award-winning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. DuPage Health Department COVID-19 vaccine weekly update

County Clerk completes four recounts for 2020 election Kaczmarek confident of results

DuPage County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek’s office recently completed four discovery recounts for the Nov. 3 General Election and found nothing that would suggest a change in the outcome certified at the conclusion of the election. Petitions for four discovery recounts were requested by candidates Jim Oberweis for U.S. 14th Congressional District, Jeanette Ward for Illinois 25th Senate District, Bob Grogan for Office of DuPage County Auditor, and Tim Whelan for DuPage County Forest Preserve Commission District 4. “I am confident of the results of the recounts, just as I am confident of the results that were certified last month,” Kaczmarek stated. Altogether, ballots from 286 precincts were recounted out of a total of 930 precincts. DuPage County had record turnout of 491,067 voters in the Nov. 3rd election. The discovery recounts were made in addition to a state-mandated retabulation last month of 47 precincts, which found no changes to unofficial totals prior to certification. Discovery recounts following this election were unprecedented in DuPage County in terms of the volume of ballots recounted including hand recounts of three precincts, the front and back observation of each paper ballot, the recount duration of several weeks, and the access of election records for review and transparency – all during challenging pandemic conditions. The estimated cost to the County to conduct the four recounts, including staff salaries, exceeds $100,000. A candidate is charged $10 per precinct for a discovery recount. Discovery recounts began on Monday, Dec. 7 with teams of Republican and Democratic election judges working with numerous poll watchers, candidates and their representatives, and County Clerk staff in the auditorium of the County’s Administrative Building in Wheaton. The discovery recounts concluded within nine days, followed by carrying out requests through Wednesday, Dec. 23 of further candidate review with staff of additional election records. “I thank all the election judges who served on these recounts especially during a pandemic,” Kaczmarek added. “I’m proud of my staff who worked to fulfill all the recounts, after completing an exhausting 2020 election cycle overlapping into the 2021 consolidated election.”

DuPage County allocates federal dollars for COVID relief Over the past several months, DuPage County has allocated federal Coronavirus Aid, Recovery, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to numerous groups to help with the fallout to COVID-19. The Board allocated: • $5 million to restaurants and bars struggling with mitigation guidelines • $2,025,000 for townships to support local food pantries • $1,563,588 to 40 local nonprofits

• $1 million to 38 park districts • $825,268 to residential and behavioral health providers • $300,000 to partner with the DuPage Health Coalition to provide an influenza vaccination program for uninsured residents • $1.5 million to provide low-income students with internet service To date, the Board also provided more than $20 million to local small businesses through the Reinvest DuPage program.

staff members and affiliated healthcare staff to assure adequate coverage across the community. Long-term care residents and staff are the other priority population in Phase 1a, and will receive vaccinations onsite through a federal program, called the Pharmacy Partnership Program. In accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and their Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations as of Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2020, DCHD is following the multiphased approach outlined below:

• Phase 1a: Healthcare personnel and long-term care facility residents. DuPage County is currently in this phase. • Phase 1b: Frontline essential workers and persons aged 75 years and older. More defining information will be provided by Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). • Phase 1c: People aged 65—74 years, people aged 16—64 years with underlying medical conditions, and other essential workers. The Health Department continues to work with partners at all levels, includ-

ing hospitals, healthcare providers, pharmacies, and community leaders, on equitable, flexible COVID-19 vaccination programs that can accommodate different vaccines and scenarios for all DuPage County populations eligible for vaccination. The goal is to make the vaccine available through as many locations as possible, as the vaccine supply increases and becomes more widely available. Additional information about how and where the vaccine will be available at dupagehealth.org/ covid19vaccine.

DCHD will be reporting the total number of vaccines distributed and administered in the county in the coming week. DCHD began vaccinating healthcare personnel on Monday, Dec. 21 and is adding about 1,500 appointments each week to make vaccine available to any DuPage County healthcare personnel ready to be vaccinated, but are not able to be vaccinated through a hospital or health system. DCHD is also working to expand the number of vaccination sites in the county available to ensure residents can access the vaccine. York’s Fleckenstein headed to Maryland-Baltimore County Senior to play volleyball at NCAA Division I school

By Mike Miazga CORRESPONDENT

One of the great advantages of traveling to national qualifier tournaments for players is the ability to be seen by many college coaches under one roof. That’s exactly how York senior girls volleyball player Emily Fleckenstein became acquainted with the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. “I first learned about UMBC while playing for Adversity (her club team) at a qualifier in Indianapolis,” she said. “My assistant coach had mentioned to me that they were showing interest, so I decided to learn about their program and reach out.” The end result was Fleckenstein signing a national letter of intent to play volleyball at the NCAA Division I university, which plays in the America East Conference. “I have traveled to Baltimore multiple times over the past couple years for lacrosse. I love the East Coast,” she said. Fleckenstein said her official visit to the school sweetened the pot even further. “I already knew I loved Baltimore, but when I went on my offiBucolo fires by a pitch cialAnthony visit I was surrounded such game. and inspiring individuals supporting

who really made UMBC stand out to me. I stayed with two of the players on the team who were freshmen at the time. They were so kind and welcoming. I really felt at home. I was able to watch one of their games and a practice. I loved the culture the team had. They took me on a trip to see Baltimore, as well. I was shown some of their favorite spots. Baltimore really is a beautiful city.” Fleckenstein, who plans to major in biological sciences, said culture played a huge role in her decision. “After seeing the team and the coaches work together, I was able to see the great culture the team had,” she said. “One of the most important things I looked for in the recruiting process was the culture of the team. I will be spending most of my time these next four years with a group of players, and I want to make sure I feel at home. I am positive I made the right choice. These girls are all so supportive of each other and share a very close bond. They are not only great players, but also amazing students. Academics are not overshadowed by athletics.” Fleckenstein is thrilled to be able to continue her schooling and volleyball career at the Division I level. “It is an honor to be able to continue myCHRIS athletic with this group of FOX career PHOTO Elmhurst Independent girls,” she said. “All the hard work I have put into the sport feels like it has paid off. that the postponed 2020 fall season will take place this spring. “I would love the chance to be able to play my last season with York Dukes volleyball,” she said. “With all the chaos this past year has brought with it, it would be comforting to have my senior year come to an end playing with the great girls at York.” By playing volleyball and lacrosse at York over the past three years, Fleckenstein has developed many friendships. “I have been very grateful for the friends I have made at York and the teachers who have been supporting me since middle school,” she said. “I am sad that senior year isn’t what I imagined, but I am happy that I enjoyed every bit of the last three years at York. They really flew by.” The UMBC Retrievers, as of now, are slated to start their delayed season Feb. 28, playing a double round-robin America East Conference schedule.

When looking at potential colleges to attend, one key thing about Colgate University stood out to Timothy Christian senior girls volleyball standout Greta Hoogstra. “I liked the academics,” she said. Hoogstra, a 6-2 senior middle blocker for Timothy Christian, will continue her academic and volleyball careers at Division I Colgate this fall. “Colgate is a really good school,” she said. “They have a master’s program and you are taught by teachers and not teachers’ assistants. They put a lot of focus on academics.” With the craziness and uncertainty of the pandemic, Hoogstra did not take an official oncampus visit to the private liberal arts college in Hamilton, New York (located in central New York, east of Syracuse). “I took virtual tours,” she said. “The campus is really beautiful. It’s really pretty there in the fall.” Hoogstra has not decided on a major, but isn’t sweating that detail based on conversations she had with people at Colgate. “One of the things that drew me there was that I told the coach that I hadn’t decided on a major yet and he said that was totally OK,” she said. “It’s a liberal arts school. You can take a little time to get adjusted. That’s what drew me there.” In addition to getting virtual tours of the school, Hoogstra had the opportunity to meet some of the current freshmen players virtually. “I did a Zoom call with them and they are all nice and were all very welcoming,” she said.

“They made me feel right at home.” Hoogstra can’t wait to get to Madison County, New York and start her new volleyball adventure. “For me, it’s an opportunity to continue to grow in the sport with people who have so much experience,” she said. “This is an opportunity that enables you to manage your time and put a lot of effort into academics and volleyball and give it your all.” Hoogstra is glad her college decision is in the rear-view mirror. “The recruiting process was something that was stressful,” she said. “To get it done is very satisfying. It still doesn’t quite seem real.” Hoogstra, who helped lead Timothy Christian to a sectional title as a junior, plays club volleyball at 1st Alliance out of Woodridge, a club that has produced more than 260 NCAA Division I athletes over the years. “1st Alliance has been perfect for me,” she said. “It’s nice to work out with a new coach each year because they all have different focuses.” Hoogstra, who had 182 kills and led the Trojans with 77 total blocks in 2019, was the team’s only Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division selection last year. As of now, the Illinois High School Association has said girls volleyball will play its postponed 2020 fall season this spring. “Coming off last year, we’re definitely hoping that we have a season (this spring),” said Hoogstra, who also plays in the successful Timothy Christian girls basketball program. “I think there is a definite possibility that we can go farther than last year because of the players we have returning.” Colgate, a member of the Patriot League, is awaiting word on when it will start its postponed 2020 fall season.

Another of the ‘First Ladies of Elmhurst’ : Patricia (Paris) Cheffer By Genie Urick

to write, score and direct many original productions which were presented by Elmhurst Children’s Theatre. The children and parents loved her! To this day, the Elmhurst Children’s Theatre gives the “PAT C AWARD” to a deserving student actor for each play.

CORRESPONDENT

(Reprinted with permission from The First Ladies of Elmhurst: Prominent Women of the Twentieth Century, the Independent has obtained permission from the Elmhurst History Museum to print stories from the book, published in 2001, recalling the outstanding women who have helped form our community. This week, we bring you Pat Cheffer. Some portions have been edited.) When Pat Cheffer describes herself she uses one word – LUCKY! “Lucky to be born to a loving middle class family who encouraged freedom and independence,” she said. “Lucky to have married my high school sweetheart, as we pledged that we would help each other be all we could be. Lucky to have two healthy, bright, ambitious sons who bring new life and flower to our family with wives and children. Lucky to be so interested in so many diverse interests and free to investigate them. Lucky to have the health and energy to invest myself fully in family, work and fun.” Patricia Jean Paris was born in Kankakee, Ill., on June 17, 1935. She attended local schools and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at Eastern Illinois University in 1957 with a major in Speech/Theatre. In 1982 she received her Master’s degree in Adult and Continuing Education from National College. Pat married Robert Gene Cheffer in 1960. Bob was a high school guidance counselor in Oak Lawn, Ill., where Pat was a speech and language therapist. In 1961 their first child, Christian Paris, was born followed by Scott Gerard in 1964. The Cheffers moved to Chandler Street in Elmhurst in 1970. “Bob changed high schools - from Oak Lawn to Main South in Park Ridge,” Pat recalled. “We fell in love with Elmhurst on our first visit.”

Patricia (Paris) Cheffer

Contribution to Elmhurst Children’s Theatre Pat became involved with Elmhurst Children’s Theatre in 1971. “I carried on the tradition of that theatre group when Rosemary Musil, its founder, retired in 1974,” she said. “Because of my drama and theatrical background, it was possible to train the women board members to be involved in all backstage aspects of production and we were able in this way perpetuate the tradition of three plays a year.” To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the theatre Pat wrote Put a Little Gypsy In Your Heart. The musical was set in Elmhurst and featured Mayor Abner Ganet, City Clerk Dorothy Lentz and Alderwoman Jane Bartmann singing Welcome to the Best Town Around. Over the years Pat continued

More community involvement Pat served on the City of Elmhurst Cultural Commission (1976-1980), the 1976 Bicentennial Commission and the 1986 Sesquicentennial Commission. The Cheffers were a charter family of the Elmhurst Historical Society. “Our family never missed a parade and took part as often as we could. Bicentennial saw all of us involved – the boys as revolutionary soldiers, myself as a pioneer woman, and Bob riding his big-wheel, bone-shaker bicycle,” Pat said. “It gave us all a thrill and a parade we wouldn’t forget. I am especially proud of a mural that hangs in the entry way of Hawthorne School that I designed and painted for the Celebration of the Bicentennial. Titled, ‘It Takes A Lot Of Hands To Build A Country,’ it features the hand prints of all the students and faculty and staff involved at that school at the time. My son Scott and I wrote a song with words to be sung at the dedication of the mural.” Pat also created a sculpture entitled, “Hush,” which was originally purchased by the Friends of the Elmhurst Library and was circulated in the Elmhurst School District’s Picture Lady Program. Continental’s Urick shares more about Cheffer Genie Urick shares Cheffer’s many accomplishments “I first met Pat Cheffer when we were members of the Elmhurst Branch of American Association of University Women and we both had an interest in television production,” Urick said. “In 1980, the City

of Elmhurst went online with Continental Cablevision. Residents then were able to subscribe for the first time to Cable TV with its multitude of channels. Continental Cablevision’s main offices and state-of-theart production studio were located right in Elmhurst at 688 Industrial Drive. “Pat originated two television programs: Easy Aces (which featured Adult Continuing Education Services available to community members) and Getting To know You (which highlighted community groups and individuals). Both programs aired on Continental Cablevision’s Community Access Channel. I was hired in 1982 to produce the monthly Elmhurst Our Kind Of Town programs for the City of Elmhurst. When I was looking for a production assistant and reporter, Pat Cheffer became the creative addition to our crew. We had great fun working together during those early days of community cable television! “In 1985 Pat was selected to host the program Lifestyle, and her life changed forever. Because of Pat’s exceptional talent and hard work, she brought fame and notoriety not only to Continental Cablevision, but to the City of Elmhurst as well. Lifestyle with Pat Cheffer received three Emmy nominations, three Women In Cable Awards, three Chicagoland Cable Awards, and won the coveted A.C.E. National Award for best local talk show! More than seven million people tuned in over the years (1985-1998) to visit with Pat and her many famous guests on the only live daily talk show in the Chicagoland area. “A unique feature of Lifestyle was the opportunity for home viewers to call in and talk with Pat and authors, artists, chefs, movie stars, entertainers, political figures, or psychics. The subjects discussed ranged from serious issues to light-hearted topics. Pat positively did her homework and conducted great interviews. She always read the authors’ books. She always researched careers, often impressing the guests themselves with the amount of information she knew about them. Pat had the unique ability to put people at ease and ask interesting questions she knew her viewers would want answered. She was genuinely gracious and friendly both on the set with guests and behind the scenes with crew. But after 13 straight seasons and 2,622 programs, Pat decided it was time to redirect her life.” Mayor Marcucci joins celebration of Lifestyle with Pat Cheffer The last live Lifestyle show was cablecast on April 17, 1998. Pat was presented with many deserving tributes, flowers and plaques from a variety of special guests. Mayor Thomas D. Marcucci also appeared and gave Pat a gold key to the City of Elmhurst. “... for all the doors you have opened, we have the Key to the City to symbolize our ‘thank you,’” Marcucci said. “It’s symbolic of all the knowledge, fun and insight you have brought and opened up for all of us …your contribution to this community has been very significant.” It definitely was the end of an exciting era for local television. All the while, though, Pat had been involved with many other projects. She hosted on Chicago’s educational Channel 11-WTTW (1989-1994). For Continental Cablevision, Pat produced Jigsaw Studio (1992-1996), a charming children’s program which also won a Chicagoland Cable Award.

(Continued from page 22) More community efforts Right here in Elmhurst, she served on the Board of Governors for Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra and the Elmhurst Economic Development Corporation (EEDC). As an accomplished painter and sculptor, Pat has been active in the Elmhurst Artist’s Guild for many years. In 1996 the Cheffers became major donors and charter members of the new Elmhurst Art Museum. Their names are inscribed on the beautiful glass wall in the entrance gallery. In 1998 Pat was named one of ten Modern Day Pioneer Women by the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ECCI). Today Pat Cheffer continues to write and direct plays and is seeking to publish her children’s book, Grandma Just Couldn’t Say No. She enjoys collecting antiques, fishing, flying kites, painting, and traveling. Especially intriguing have been her European “painting trips” taken abroad with other artists. And you might still catch Pat once in a while hosting a special Elmhurst Our Kind Of SUBMITTED PHOTO Elmhurst Independent After 13 straight seasons and 2,622 programs, the final Lifestyle with Pat Cheffer program aired on April 17, 1998. Pictured here are (from Town program like the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. left): author Genie Urick, Cheffer and then-Mayor Thomas D. Marcucci.
