Accessibility group brightens Antioch Antioch By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

The Antioch Area Health Accessibility Alliance, or AAHAA, has grown since it started five years ago. The agency receives support from the Village of Antioch in office space and that overhead. Antioch Township provides the PACE bus. Antioch Township shares the bus service with Grant and Lake Villa Townships. Unlike other agencies, AAHAA continually follows up on referrals, according to AAHAA and Antioch township board member Peter Grant. “We don’t just refer folks. When AAHAA staff refers a client to another agency, we follow-up. AAHAA makes sure clients receive the help that works for them,” Grant said in a telephone interview. Network nurse Maureen Cull, often the first contact for clients, attempts to stay proactive. “I work with the client to determine what they need. I try to return all messages within one business day,” Cull said. Cull, after she determines the needs of clients, then helps them find the appropriate service. The need could be food, transportation or medical service. She can also help clients understand how to follow instructions from

the doctor. Fran Lesza coordinates medical transportation with the Antioch Township PACE bus that runs every week on Wednesday. “We are exploring other transportation for area resident since there isn’t much public transportation in

this area,” Lesza said. The Wednesday curbto-curb service is free and wheelchair accessible. To ensure transportation, which is first come, first served, AAHAA recommends reserving a seat by noon Monday. “If you have a last minute

need, please call to see if a seat is available,” Lesza said. To arrange transportation, speak to a network nurse or volunteer, call (847) 3952809. Calls received on voice mail are answered within 24 business hours. AAHAA partners with ElderCare in Lake Villa, a

ministry of Prince of Peace Catholic Church. AAHAA partners with ElderCare for door-to-door transportation and both groups welcome new volunteers. Cull also holds several seminars a year at the Antioch Public Library. Two will be scheduled this fall and topics covered could include women’s health issues, aging with grace and health and managing holiday stress. AAHAA executive director Colleen Lennon said in a recent group interview held at the AAHAA offices in the Antioch Village Hall the group’s role is to fill gaps in the community. “We aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel. We look around to see what is available and then network with those agencies. If there is a missing piece, we try to fill that in,” Lennon said. “AAHAA has grown to the point where it is on the cusp of moving to the next level,” Grant said. One new initiative is the Go Antioch walking program, a weekly event open to all area residents, AAHAA program coordinator Kelly Atkinson reports. “We have older folks, families with strollers and some even bring their dogs

A 24-year-old Antioch man was arrested and charged with three felonies related to a July 6 disturbance at the Joanna Court Apartment Complex, Antioch police said. Kevin J. The disturbance happened at around 4 a.m., when Antioch police received reports of several men arguing in the third floor hallway of the apartment building, and as officers arrived, one fled the scene. McHenry County Mental Health Board seeks proposals

The McHenry County Mental Health Board is seeking proposals for the purpose of contracting with individual, public or private entities for mental health, substance use disorder and/or intellectual and developmental disability prevention, treatment and/or recovery support services for McHenry County residents of all ages. The MHB has chosen to include autism spectrum disorder and to address the behavioral health issues exhibited in persons with brain injury for McHenry County residents. Annually, community mental health funds support approximately 30 agencies providing over 80 lines of service available to McHenry County residents. An example of community mental health funds at work is Naloxone training and field kits to help McHenry County law enforcement agencies respond to increasing heroin overdoses. There have been five successful overdose reversals helping to save the lives of individuals fighting heroin addiction. The McHenry County Mental Health Board is utilizing a web-based application system for submission of funding proposals for the contract year beginning December 1, 2017 and ending November 30, 2018. The web-based system will be accessible to applicants at www.mc708.org until 4:30 p.m. on July 31, 2017. For more information, contact Vickie Johansen at (815) 788-4398.

Relative takes advantage of struggling veteran

Summer is here and that means everyone is busy with BBQ’s, beaches, boating, weddings, festivals and all the good things there are to enjoy outdoors in our summer weather. While these are all great ways to spend your summer it also is when we see a typical slow down in donations. The needs of the poverty stricken are still great. In fact we see an increase in requests because of the amount of children home from school for summer break, causing a greater need for food because of not having the breakfast

By

and lunch meal assistance provided by the schools and the added expense of child care, and the very real threat of utility disconnection. Our friends at Fox Charities are always thinking of ways to help the poverty stricken through The Time Is Now to Help. When they

heard about the slowdown in donations and the still great need in our communities they immediately said, “Let’s do another matching grant!” We feel so blessed to have such caring friends and philanthropists as Fox Charities. They truly love, encourage and support all we do. It gives us great joy to announce the Fox Charities summer 2017 $25,000 matching grant to begin immediately. Over the years we have helped thousands of our fellow creations because of Fox Charities matching grants and all of your matching do-

nations. We will continue to help many more this summer thanks to Fox Charities and all of you. Dear W.C., I am a 92-year-old veteran in need of some help. I let a relative move in with me and I think he was taking advantage of me. I need to move closer to the V.A. hospital because I can no longer drive into Chicago or Madison on my own. I was counting on this relative to do the driving but they ended up just using my car for their own needs until they got in an accident

and it was totaled. Then he told me my rent went up and I needed to pay the increase immediately. Like an old fool I gave him cash to drop off that never made it to my landlord, who has since told me they did not raise the rent. My utilities went up drastically because he was constantly putting the air conditioning on cold and forgetting about it and leaving lights on. I have had to cut back on food and other necessities to pay the high utility bill. Now I found the cash I have been hiding away to pay for my move, first month’s rent

and security deposit has been stolen from me. I know he must have taken it because he moved out last week and did not even tell me he was leaving. I have no idea where he went. I filled out a police report but they said there is not much they can do unless he shows up again. How could I have been so foolish? I trusted this person and really thought they were moving in to help me. Dear Readers, Again a senior citizen is

Lake County Sheriff’s Office offers tips on how to prevent car burglary The Lake County Sheriff’s Office reminds members of the community to lock their cars, when leaving them unattended. Over the past month, the sheriff’s office has seen an increase in burglaries occurring to motor vehicles throughout Lake County, especially in the northwest quadrant of the county. Car burglars tend to target unlocked cars parked in driveways during the overnight hours. Generally, burglars will go driveway-to-driveway, checking door handles to see if they can enter an unlocked car. Once inside, they will steal anything of value. They may also use the garage door opener to attempt to enter the garage or residence.

“With the warmer months upon us, we generally see an increase in property crimes of opportunity. I urge everyone to keep his or her cars and homes locked in an effort to avoid becoming a target. If you see any suspicious activity, report it by calling 911,” said Sheriff Mark Curran. Other tips include: • Always lock the car when it’s left unattended • Ensure all windows are closed and secured • Remove or hide all items of value from the car while it’s left unattended • Consider installing motion-sensor floodlights • Consider installing exterior home surveillance cameras

Community members are invited to have coffee and a conversation with the Chief and Command Staff of the Antioch Police Department from 9 to 10 a.m. on Friday, July 14, at Antioch Public Library District, 757 North Main St., Antioch. “Coffee with the Cop” will provide an opportunity for community members and officers from the Antioch Police

Department to come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships and drink coffee. Community members are encouraged to ask questions, share ideas or simply get to know the officers. These interactions are the foundation of community partnerships. A portion of the nearly 1,300 runners and walkers begin their holiday stampede at the start of the 23rd Annual 5K Run For Freedom at Poplar Ave. and Cunningham Dr. in Antioch on Tuesday, July 4. Hometown entrant Daniel Ressler of Antioch took the Men’s Division title, crossing the finish line in 15:58, bettering the 2016 winning time by nine seconds. Last year’s men’s winner, Will Brewster of Grayslake, had hoped to make this year his fourth consecutive Run for Freedom victory. An untimely injury prevented him from entering the competition, however. The Women’s Division victory went to Jodi Meier of Pleasant Prairie, Wisc. with a time of 20:03. Learning from Lorimer Former Ill. Senator leads to historic change

By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

For most of us today, the process of electing our United States Senator has always been the same. Each senator is elected by state voters, however, that was not always the case. In the early years, Senators were chosen by the state House of Representatives, but that changed after William Lorimer was chosen for an Illinois Senate Seat. Lorimer, who was born in Manchester England in 1861, immigrated to the United States with his family in 1866 and settled in Chicago by 1870. According to the Biographical Directory of the U.S. Congress, “Lorimer was a self-educated man who was apprenticed to the trade of sign maker by the age of 10.” Lorimer worked at various jobs in his lifetime including working in the Chicago meat-packing houses and for a street railroad company. He was a close friend of lumber magnate Edward Hines, and made some additional money in the lumber business as well as in later times as a builder and a brick manufacturer. It was politics that soon became his real interest. He was a ward boss and constable by the age of 25. Lorimer, known as the “Blond Boss”, had political control of most of the city of Chicago, except for the northwest side, which was held by his

friend and Chicago businessman Henry L. Hertz. Hertz later sold Lorimer land adjacent to his summer retreat on the area of Pistakee Lake, known as Pistakee Bay, an area where the wealthy and politically connected made their homes. Lorimer built a large house on the land, large enough to house his 13 children who lived there in the summer. Politically, Lorimer was considered a maker of county officials, mayors and even governors. “Big Bill” Thompson, a 3-time Chicago mayor, was considered one of Lorimer’s protégées. Lorimer himself entered elective office in 1894, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives as a Republican. It was an office he won and began his term on March 4, 1895 a seat held until March 3, 1901 when he lost the next election. He returned to the House of Representatives in 1903 where he continued to serve until his resignation in 1909 to serve as Illinois Senator. Known as a manipulator of public officials, Lorimer is said to have worked to block the re-election of U.S. Sen. Albert J. Hopkins, also a Republican who had been a friend of Lorimer but now was a political foe. Lorimer was known for providing entertainment to his constituency that included bands, circuses, and moving pictures for their enjoyment. They in return pro-

the victim of a scheme to take advantage of them. There are many heartless people out there that have no problem using a senior citizen, even a relative, and causing them great financial hardship. I called upon this senior veteran to get a better grasp on her situation. I did not know what I was going to find so I went prepared with a bag of food and some toiletries. I stood outside the senior woman’s door waiting patiently for him to open the door, assuming at her age I may have to wait a few moments longer than usual. I was surprised when the door was opened quickly by a senior woman that looked much younger than 92 years of age. She stood straight and tall and didn’t even use a cane to walk. After I showed her my identification and we introduced ourselves she invited me inside. I handed her the bag of food and toiletries. She looked through the bag with a mixture of eagerness and embarrassment. I could see she was not used to receiving help but she also knew she needed it. She was from the generation that did not take hand outs or accept assistance easily. The apartment was nice and very orderly. I watched as she carefully put away the items I had brought. When I commented on how organized her apartment was, the senior woman told me she had been in the military for years and was proud of being a veteran and the training she had received. I noticed a few bare spots that looked out of place, where

vided the votes to keep him in office. It was time for the Illinois legislators to provide a Senator for the United States Senate. It was believed in the late 19th and early 20th century, that the best way to buy a seat in the Senate was by spreading money among the state legislators who had, according to the U.S. Constitution the job of choosing the next senator. Although Lorimer acted surprised when he was chosen to represent the state in the senate, he immediately resigned from his U.S. Representative position to embrace that of Senator and took office on June 18, 1909. In 2010, the Chicago Tribune probed allegations Lorimer bought the votes. A representative, identified as Charles White, allegedly admitted receiving a $1,000 payment for his vote, and others conveyed the same sentiment. Lorimer, however, denied the charge. Lorimer encouraged a Senate investigation sure he would be cleared. Although Lorimer was originally cleared, a year later, the Progressive Party brought up the charge, and was removed from the Senate on a 55-28 vote. Lorimer was removed from Congress on July 13, 1912 after the Senate adopted a resolution declaring, “that corrupt methods and practices were employed in his (Lorimer) election and that the election, therefore, was invalid.”

This home on the shores of Pistakee Bay, built in the early 1900s was the home of Senator William Lorimer. He built a large home to accommodate his family of 13 children.

The event caused the senate to look at the wisdom of the writers of the Constitution who felt that the placing of the choice of the senators was best left in the hands of the legislature rather than in the hands of the people. After the review, U.S. Congress passed the 17th Amendment of Constitution, which called for direct election of U.S. Senators in May 12. Once states ratified the amendment, it became part of the U.S. Constitution a year later. In November 1913, the first senators were elected under the amendment, removing the state legislatures from the process. If a senate seat is vacated, the Governor is left to appoint a successor. What happened to Lorim-

er after his removal from the Senate? He returned to Chicago, supposedly unrepentant and was greeted by Chicagoans who believed his removal was political and that he had been unjustly removed from the Senate. In 1916 he sold his Pistakee home to Charles Hollenbach, owner of a sausage company in Chicago. He spent much of his time in Chicago or the Crystal Lake home of his father. Lorimer served as President of the La Salle Street Trust and Savings Bank from 1910 through 1915. He also continued to work in the lumber business. He unsuccessfully entered the Senate race of 1916 and the House of Representatives race in 1918. While his fortunes

you.” I saw her bravely fighting tears as she said, “God bless you and all those people that want to help me. Thank you.” A month later this woman was moved to her new apartment. It was only 10 minutes from the V. A. Hospital. While being smaller it had more amenities for her. There were social gatherings she could now attend and even other veterans she could spend time with. She commented how she had hardly even used her new television we had installed for her because of her now busy schedule. Our assistance with the overdue utilities allowed her to leave without that expense to worry about. We also provided some additional food and toiletries to help her until she was safely moved. We provided new appliances to replace those that were stolen. The help we provided allowed her to live independently and successfully. things may have been. There were wires on a TV stand but no television. There was an empty microwave shelf and no small appliances on the counters. When I asked about these things the senior woman told me her relative had taken all these things when he had left unexpectedly. I could see both hurt and anger on her face when she spoke about all the things this relative had done. The senior woman told me how the relative had persuaded her into thinking she needed him to live with her. The woman said, “He had me convinced I was old and feeble so I should not be living alone. The thing is I have never been feeble and I managed to live perfectly fine on my own for years, since my husband died more than 15 years ago.” I was beginning to see just how sharp this woman was. Age is definitely just a number and did not apply to this woman. She even looked and acted 20 years younger than her age. After speaking in depth about her relative, and the many ways he had taken advantage of the senior woman’s trust, I asked to look over her financial information. The senior woman showed me her overdue utility bill. I could see her rent was very high and her expense for rides to and from the V.A. Hospital for some medical treatments was very expensive. She could live much more comfortably if she was able to move closer to her medical care and into a smaller apartment. She did not need two bedrooms,

especially for other people to live in rent-free. She also would benefit from living where there would be more access to public and senior transportation. My goal was to get her caught up on her bills and to help her find a place to live that would be close to the V.A. Hospital and much more economical. Her lease was up for renewal the following month so it was perfect timing for her to move. The senior woman told me about the place she had been planning on moving into. It was a senior citizen apartment complex that was much closer to her veteran’s services and included her cable television and utilities. When I commented on her lack of a television she said, “I do miss the company and entertainment it provides. It helps me to feel less alone.” I had a recent donation of a new television that I knew had to be shared with this woman. I told her we would hook it up for her in her new apartment when she moved. She looked sad and said, “Well, I can’t afford to go to that apartment any longer. My relative took my money that I needed for that move.” When I told her we would be providing the first month’s rent and security deposit I saw a look of confusion on her face. She asked, “You would do that for me?” I told her about all of you and how you would want her to live where she could get by successfully on her own. The only way she could do that was if she moved. I added, “It’s the least we can do for one of our veteran’s. God bless
