In the online and social media world,

I’m @excitedaboutfood. If you’re reading this—The City Different’s premier issue of the Santa Fe Dining Guide— I’m guessing that you, as well, are excited about food. I’ve had a lifetime of experience on this tasty topic: I’m the author of some 20 cookbooks, many about the foods of New Mexico and the American Southwest. And I was the longtime culinary editor for New Mexico Magazine. These days, I host “Heating It Up,” a weekly radio show and podcast about the hottest topics in food, interviewing chefs, restaurateurs, and cookbook authors from around the globe. I lead folks on international culinary tours and am fortunate to travel the world in search of distinctive food. But where do I eat most—and most happily? Right here in scrumptious Santa Fe, New Mexico. I’m so glad you’re here, too, or at least planning a visit. If you’re a visitor, the sheer number of restaurants in our modest-sized city may surprise you—more than 400! The diversity is comparable to that found in cities whose populations measure in the millions. What virtually none of those places have, though, is the classic New Mexican fare that put us on the map long ago. Northern New Mexico’s distinctive cooking style is neither Tex, nor Mex. Savor the singular blend of Puebloan and Hispanic ingredients—the blue corn, the earthy pinto beans, and the dishes blanketed in soulful red and green chile sauces. This classic Santa Fe food shares the table today with a world of cuisines, along with highly inventive contemporary fare from many creative, award-winning chefs. You’ll experience an unmatched blend of charm and sophistication when dining here. You can find yourself eating one night in a centuries-old adobe home or saloon, and the next, in a snazzy new world-class resort hotel. At all levels of the food chain, from deluxe dining to casual coffee shops, the service is welcoming and warmly relaxed. In keeping with the artistic heritage of the area, you may eat on plates crafted by a local ceramicist or use flatware created by a local company. Almost certainly, if you’re dining in restaurants featured in this Guide, you’ll be served many ingredients grown by farmers in the surrounding area. The accompanying beer, wine, and even spirits may be made just down the road. Do expect to be challenged, though, in your efforts to enjoy every spot! Use this Guide to make the best use of your precious time. You can easily pinpoint neighborhoods, as well as general types of cuisine, then home in on what excites you most. Keep in mind that menus may shift with the seasons or the whims of the chef, and that prices and hours can change, too. The Guide displays each restaurant’s website and social media info, so take 4

In 1947, Dan (Dionysus) Razatos, a Greek immigrant with an American dream, took over the Plaza Café and his family has been feeding Santa Fe ever since. Dan married a local girl named Beneranda Maria Saiz and together they ran the Plaza and raised six children. As their children grew they all worked at the Plaza and helped to create what the restaurant is today.

assella is the name of a tiny Italian Village. It is also a type of wine. Nestled at the base of Alpine slopes in Northern Italy, the small town of Sassella has persevered over the centuries. It is located in Lombardy’s Valtellina valley Sassella is derived from the Italian word Executive Chef for ‘rock’. The village prides Cristian Pontiggia itself in vineyards planted on terraces cut into the side of its rocky slopes. Surrounded by high snow-capped mountains and set among the vineyards is the Santuario Madonna della Sassella, a tenth-century chapel that looks out over the meandering river Adda and the ancient town of Sondrio. It is these historic vineyards that produce a distinctive grape called Chiavennasca from which the Sassella wines are crafted. Executive Chef Cristian Pontiggia hails from this region and this culture. He brings the underlying tradition of fine Italian dining into contemporary world cuisine, producing innovative dishes that are a delight to the eye as well as the palette. In addition to working at two Michelin Star awarded restaurants in Europe, Chef Pontiggia has received awards for cooking and wine knowledge from the Chaine des Routisseurs, and the American Culinary Federation. He is also a Superchef for Cooking with Kids. The Italian government recognizes him as a Master Chef and he holds a culinary degree that certifies him as a Doctor of Enogastronomy. This restaurant provides a unique stage to highlight Chef Pontiggia’s culinary artistry. We invite you to experience the merging of new world cuisine with old world traditions in his signature style.
