The 2020-2021 school year was nothing short of life-changing for all of us. Of course, when we look back at this year we will remember the hours of remote learning, the social distancing, and the feelings of uncertainty, but even more we will remember the overwhelming outpouring of support and love that came during a collective time of need. Motivated by a sense of responsibility and duty, each member of the WJA community showed our students what it truly means to be a “Person for Others.” We will be forever grateful for the examples set for our students through the actions, care, and support of our alumni, families, teachers, donors, volunteers, and so many others who embody the WJA spirit and mission.

LEADING PHILOSOPHIES Over the past 20 months we have lost a lot but, like with most things in life, we have also learned a lot. Throughout this Investors Report some of the 2020-2021 lessons will be highlighted. We learned that the WJA community runs deep and is steadfast, not only in good times but also during the most challenging times. We learned that the bonds formed between students and faculty, and between benefactors, friends, supporters and the mission, and between students and sponsors transcend physical proximity and were even strengthened at times as we all found ways to connect from a distance. We learned that hardship often yields creative solutions. We learned how interconnected the WJA brotherhood has become across our alums, their families, the faculty and staff, and our current students. We learned how resilient our young men truly are and how our amazing teachers served as role models in their own resilience. We learned that in times of challenge some things need to change and some things stay the same, as they are the foundation upon which strength and grit are cultivated. And we learned new perspectives on the importance of the transformative work we do here at WJA. As we look forward, we are working tirelessly to secure the future of the Academy and implement strategic growth so as to maximize the impact of our programs, mission, and community for years to come. We are taking the lessons learned from the past year, together with the lessons from the past 20 years, and building on them to ensure the Washington Jesuit Academy and its young men continue to create change and opportunity for many years to come. Thank you for your enduring support without which we could not persist in this work. We invite you to read the stories shared on the following pages to see the true impact you are having as a community that rallies behind and believes in the young men who come through Varnum Street and go on to be their best selves.

With so much uncertainty in the world, our goal with distance learning was to mirror the normal WJA experience, both for students and parents. We wanted to give our students consistency and take any burdens we could away from parents. – BRIAN FARMER, WJA PRINCIPAL 05
MAINTAINING CONSISTENCY CREATING A VIRTUAL CLASSROOM Creating stability for our students and alumni was the largest priority for our leadership team during this year of continued uncertainty. Ensuring that every member of the WJA Brotherhood was able to reach back to Varnum Street and receive the personalized support that they need is an incomparable ability of WJA. Though the needs of our youngest students and our oldest alumni differed greatly, our commitment to fully providing for each student we have served remained the same.
WJA VIRTUAL LEARNING ELEMENTS • Cameras required to be on •S tudents expected to wear uniform • Virtual field trips • Digital presentations • C lass participation mandatory •O ff screen engagement projects • 1 20 Chromebooks given to WJA students, siblings, alumni • Attendance rate: 99% A majority of the Washington D.C. WJA has taught me to really embrace the idea of Men for Others. We are not only here for our alumni brothers, but for WJA in general. The support system exists, all you have to do is seek it out. – MANNY RIVERA, CLASS OF 2008
PROVIDING FOR THE WJA BROTHERHOOD The connections we create at WJA extend well beyond the 8th grade. With a robust Office of Student and Alumni Success (OSAS), we have the unique ability to maintain contact with each and every member of the WJA Brotherhood. Whether a student graduated last year or with our very first class, they can find a home and a helping hand at any time. When the shelter-in-place mandates went into effect, our OSAS team personally reached out to every alumnus within one month. The team was quickly able to create plans that would support each young man through the difficulties of the pandemic because of the foundation of trust already in place from previous, ongoing conversations with these young men. But even before any of these plans could be explained or executed, the strength of our WJA Brotherhood broke through repeatedly. Phone calls to our alumni quickly switched from the usual, “What can WJA do to support you?” to them asking us, “What can I do to support WJA?” Resources offered to WJA Alumni: • Focused environment with reliable internet and food access at the WJA campus for high school alumni who were learning remotely. • Support and guidance, as well as help completing all of the necessary paperwork for applications and financial aid, for alumni applying to college. • Fill gaps in financial needs that resulted from a lack of dorms and summer jobs for college alumni. • Weekly grocery delivery available to all alumni and families.

CREATING CONNECTIONS WJA welcomed two new teachers to the faculty for the 2020-2021 school year. These educators accepted their positions knowing they would be entering at a time when interactions with their students and community would take place predominantly online.
JOINING THE WJA COMMUNITY While these teachers were able to “see” their students each day, building trust and connections was slightly more difficult since they had never before met any of their students in person. For Gabrielle Otto, many of her 5th grade students were also new to WJA so the entire class took to learning about one another simultaneously. In the 7th grade, Chris Boland found ways to learn about his students by emphasizing non-academic moments such as “Fun Fact Fridays.” All of the time these new teachers dedicated to learning about their students allowed them to create stronger bonds and resulted in a more unified classroom despite often being physically separated. Mr. Boland remarked that, “it was tough bonding through the computer during remote classes, so it just made it that much more rewarding when we did have a moment of connection.” And Ms. Otto added, “I know how much work went into supporting them as individuals when we were online in the beginning, and then, when we were able to return to school, watching them supporting one another was the perfect end to the year.”
STUDENTS ATTENDING IN-PERSON CLASSES BY THE END OF THE YEAR:
100% By the end of the school year, we invited every single student back into the building to learn, grow, and connect in person.

EMPHASIZING SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL) A defining element of the WJA experience is the importance of supporting our students emotionally as well as academically. The entire WJA staff made a dedicated push to maintain high levels of support and connection not only with students, but also with all families and alumni. Upon beginning virtual learning, the leadership staff divided the classroom rosters and made weekly phone calls to check in with families about employment, food security, distance learning, and any other challenges they might be navigating. This process allowed WJA to identify both individual matters and larger patterns affecting the community we serve. A concentrated effort was made to offer help while balancing privacy, but regardless of their individual comfort in sharing their stories, “every family appreciated this personal touch and the knowledge that WJA had their backs,” said School Counselor, Adrienne Biel, LICSW. These engagements, and the many conversations that took place, underscored the importance of the multidimensional support we have always provided at WJA. The usual SEL classes for 4th-6th grades that take place when we are in person continued with additional grade-level faculty meetings focusing on this type of work. Our usual office hours in the counseling department were extended so that more students could drop in and have conversations about what was going on in their lives, families, and communities. Throughout this year, our commitment to our students only increased as we navigated the obstacles and continued to move forward with our mission.
Our Summer Program amplified the emphasis on SEL. Weekly activities for students focused on five themes:

A HYBRID YEAR Despite COVID’s many restrictions, we were able to offer monthly engagement opportunities such as virtual class reunions and masses as well as field trips, class retreats, and service projects. We were proud to still have two cornerstone events in-person in a safe and impactful way: the WJA Open and WJA Graduation.
SWINGING SUCCESS The annual WJA Open was our first in-person event of the 2020-2021 school year which was open to WJA supporters. Nearly 130 golfers gathered safely at the Falls Road Golf Course for a fun day of athletic and philanthropic competition. We are pleased to announce that the WCAC Team was the inaugural winner of the WJA Cup, beating out the IAC and Free Agent Teams. The success of this sold-out event was achieved in large part because of the support of our Title Sponsor, United Bank, all our sponsors, our host committee, co-captains, players, and volunteers.

CELEBRATING THE CLASS OF 2021 The perseverance and resiliency shown by our Class of 2021 was deserving of a large celebration. Since we were limited in the number of guests who could safely attend our Graduation ceremony in person, the WJA community also gathered online to celebrate these deserving young men. In front of their friends, families, and nearly 100 virtual attendees, our student speakers reflected on their proudest and most influential moments as well as thanking all who have supported them during their time at WJA.

FUNDING EXCELLENCE In fiscal year 2021, WJA’s financial results support our continued educational funding model that stands apart in its reliance on private donations versus government funding or tuition. This is achieved through a combination of revenue procurement and cost management, allowing WJA to fulfill our mission of providing a high quality and comprehensive education to boys from low-income communities. We are able to provide a robust array of services, as well as lasting and multidimensional support to each of our students and growing number of alumni thanks to generous donors who believe in our mission.

MOVING FORWARD Since its founding, WJA has remained laser focused on social justice and equal opportunity for its students. This is a fulcrum moment to ensure the growing number of successful WJA students and alumni bolsters the movement for equity, equality, and justice. In 2019, the WJA Board recommended engaging Bellwether Education Partners to conduct a study to determine how WJA can do even greater good. This consideration stemmed from the Academy’s strong footing on an admissions front with annual applications routinely surpassing available spots, and on a financial front with its Varnum Street campus paid for in full. With these elements in place, WJA can now turn its attention to the future. Key recommendations from the Bellwether report which maps out a 10-year plan include expanding enrollment through incremental growth each academic year. TODAY: To invest for today is to rally the community of committed supporters and to sustain this extraordinary model on which WJA was built. It keeps the doors of the Varnum Street campus open; the nutritious meals on the table; the faculty in the classrooms; the students well-resourced; and the tuition-free model intact. Philanthropic support from annual fund donors, Sponsors, and additional visionaries has an immediate impact on the Academy and is critical to moving forward its established, strategic priorities. TOMORROW: If tomorrow lends itself to an expanded student body, then tomorrow requires a significant investment across faculty, nutrition, enrichment, athletics, graduate support, counseling, learning support, and the Varnum Street campus –the defining elements of the WJA experience. FOREVER: To invest in forever is to create a well-defined endowment that supports the individuals, activities, and resources of the Academy in perpetuity. Growth of the endowment through investment return and philanthropic giving enables the Academy to endow scholarships and professorships, ensuring top talent in the WJA classrooms. It also allows the Academy to launch new programs and initiatives for students and alumni, and to support a wide range of significant needs and opportunities as they arise.
15
HONOR ROLL Philanthropic gifts to Washington Jesuit Academy allow us to meet the evolving needs of our community. Though many of our traditional large events were limited during the 2020-2021 year, the breadth of support and dedication to WJA was apparent in many other ways. We capitalized upon digital fundraising moments such as Giving Tuesday and a Virtual Halloween 10 Mile Bike Ride. We also closed the end of the fiscal year with a true success in our “20 in 20” campaign, a 20-day initiative which raises $20,000 in donations. These online giving opportunities showcased the enduring support for our community despite our need to be physically distanced. Collectively, the fiscal year ending June 30, 2021 brought:
TOTAL GIVING OF $4,044,526 DONORS WHO INCREASED THEIR GIFT: OVER 40% INAUGURAL VARNUM SOCIETY MEMBERS: 236 MORE THAN 1,170 DONORS
DONORS Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, WJA has the resources to innovate, inspire, and empower our students and alumni. The tiered levels recognize our donors’ incredible impact by giving level. $50,000+

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES: ONE CHILD AT A TIME Judi Teske was first introduced to WJA only a few months before the onset of the pandemic, but the visits she made to Varnum Street left lasting impressions. “When I visited, I was so blown away by the classrooms,” she says. “The entire community seemed to be united around the single principle of excellence. The teachers and the students demonstrated with their actions and words how they lived out the mission of the school.” After witnessing our comprehensive program first-hand, Judi felt inspired to become a WJA Sponsor and give a young man the life-changing opportunity of a WJA education. Out of an abundance of caution, Judi and her sponsored student, Mohamed Keita (Class of 2025), were unable to meet in person during the pandemic. Knowing that building a meaningful connection with an individual student is such an integral part of WJA’s Sponsor program, Judi and her Sponsor group met with Mohamed over Zoom instead. “Mohamed seems very mature for his age. He had a seriousness of purpose and a quiet pride in his abilities. And I feel very strongly that WJA is the right place for him.” Looking forward, Judi is actively encouraging her friends to tour the school and consider becoming WJA Sponsors. When asked what inspired her to share her experience with others, she explains, “In these last two years, I have noticed that people can feel ill equipped to know where to begin making a difference. And to them I say, ‘You know what? I can’t fix everything in the world. What I can do is take one concrete step to address the troubles of the world by providing an education to one little boy and helping him achieve his dreams.’”

EXPANDING THE WJA FAMILY As dedicated WJA Sponsors, Jeanette and Tom McHale believe that every child deserves a top-tier educational experience. When their sponsored student, Davian King (Class of 2021), was preparing to graduate, Jeanette and Tom invited a group of friends to hear directly from Marcus Washington, Head of School, about how Sponsors play a vital role in helping WJA achieve its mission. They wanted their friends to know that “other than being a phenomenal school, the support that WJA provides as a community—from the emotional to the nutritional and beyond—creates an impact on these students even after their years at school have ended. WJA sets students on a path for success.” The McHales know first-hand how WJA’s unique sense of community extends beyond the classrooms, and how the connections built through the Sponsor program can make a tremendous difference in the life of WJA student. During the height of COVID, Davian wrote the McHales a letter expressing how a large part of what was pushing him through the hardships of the pandemic was the knowledge that the McHales believed in him and his future success. After graduation, when it was safe to do so, Davian visited the McHale family to thank them in person for their encouragement and support.

SECOND-GENERATION WJA LEADERS For Patrick Crilley and Clark Pastrick, Co-Chairs of the WJA Auxiliary Board, supporting WJA is a family tradition. “Years ago, there was a night that my parents couldn’t attend a WJA Sponsor event, and they sent me in their place so their student would have someone there for support. That experience, and meeting that young man, was so moving,” Pat recalls. Inspired by their families’ commitment to our school and their own experiences interacting with WJA students, both young men have taken on leadership roles at the Academy and want to encourage other young people to support WJA. “The Auxiliary Board’s purpose is to host events for emerging professionals so that they can connect with one another and with the mission of WJA,” explains Clark. “The passion behind the organization is something young people should see first-hand.” As Pat and Clark continue to advance the goals of this philanthropically minded group of young professionals, these second-generation WJA leaders appreciate the unique connection they share with their parents. “We can bond over our support of the Academy, and I can always bounce new ideas off of my parents, who understand the mission and importance of the school,” says Pat. “You are changing the future if you are involved with WJA. The impact is real.”

SUSTAINING DONORS These benefactors align their passions with the Academy’s priorities, generating an incredible impact across WJA. We acknowledge these individuals and families who support our mission through endowments. •A NONYMOUS SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT The donor is passionate about education and considered funding the start-up of a school to provide better educational opportunities for students. When he was introduced to the Washington Jesuit Academy, he realized that what he was dreaming of already existed with a successful track record. As a result, he and his family chose to endow a scholarship. • T HE ANBRYCE SCHOLARSHIP Bea and Tony Welters grew up in difficult circumstances and after having built a successful business, they made it their mission to extend a helping hand to others in need. They have established a summer camp, afterschool and Saturday leadership program, and extensive support programs at the college level. Their AnBryce Scholarship supports WJA students who have participated in their summer camp, after-school, or any of their foundation’s programs. • T HE BERNASEK FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP In celebration of the Washington Jesuit Academy’s past success and bright future in providing a values-oriented education for students, Cathy and Brian Bernasek chose to endow a scholarship in 2015. • T HE BRODNIK SCHOLARSHIP As longtime student sponsors at the Washington Jesuit Academy, Joan and Tim Brodnik chose to make their investment permanent by endowing a scholarship in 2007. •C LAIRE Z. CAREY, PH.D. FACULTY ENDOWMENT FUND When the Washington Jesuit Academy was formed, the MBNA Foundation and its founder Charlie Cawley chose to establish an endowment fund for faculty salaries in honor of Claire Z. Carey, a former dean of Georgetown College at Georgetown University. • T HE CLARK CHARITABLE FOUNDATION ENDOWMENT At the direction of Courtney and Scott Pastrick, having witnessed first-hand WJA’s growth toward stability and sustainability, the Clark Charitable Foundation established the endowment to honor WJA’s countless benefactors and to inspire future confidence and investment in the mission of the Academy. • T HE GERMAN ORPHAN HOME OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA ENDOWMENT FUND This fund was established to provide support for science, art, and music programs at the Washington Jesuit Academy. •C ECILIA H. GONZALEZ AND STEPHEN M. FOSTER SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT FUND Howrey LLP and Stephen Foster, both long-time student sponsors at WJA, established this endowment fund in memory of Stephen’s beloved wife and Howrey partner, Cecilia H. Gonzalez. • T HE CIVITAS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP FUND John Quigley has come to see education as key to an individual’s growth and advancement. He is a graduate of Georgetown University, where he was a Baker Scholar, and thereafter received degrees from Stanford and Columbia. He is committed to providing scholarship aid to those with a keen desire to pursue their education. John is delighted to see WJA have as a cornerstone a commitment to the Jesuit ideal of cura personalis.
