6. FALL PROTECTION

FALL ARRESTER Every year, a large number of serious work-related accidents (falls) occur as a result of not wearing fall-prevention equipment while carrying out construction and assembly work. And that although legislators quite specifically require employers to take measures for protection against falls for work at a height at which there is a risk of falling. If the risk of a fall cannot be eliminated with collective protective equipment, personal safety equipment (PSE) in the form of catch belts, connecting materials and various accessory parts is used. Important notes! Tests Users are obligated to check their PSE (personal safety equipment) for its proper condition before every use with a visual inspection. The company owner must have the PSE checked by an expert for its proper condition in accordance with the conditions for use and the plant conditions as required, however at least every 12 months. Duration of use The duration of use is dependent on the respective conditions for use. The specifications of the instructions for use must always be observed.

Damaged fall arresters must always be separated out immediately! For example: • In case of damage to straps and seams on belts and cables. (Fig. 1). • Following heavy loading due to a fall. • In case of heavy thermal loading, traces of melting, burned-in weld beads, etc. (Fig. 2). • With heavy soiling (Fig. 3). • In case of deformed or corroded fitting parts (Fig. 4).

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

The following requirements are not mandatory for the certification of the shoes, but are needed for some special applications decided by the manufacturer.

TYPE II Completely rubber or polymeric shoes

These shoes minimise the accumulation of electrostatic shocks by dissipating them, consequently also reducing the risk of fire or explosion when working in environments where flammable substances are present. Additional measures shall be taken if there is the risk of electric shocks. The electric resistance of this type of shoe can be considerably modified by bending, contamination or humidity. When using anti-static shoes, the resistance of the ground must be such as not to annul the protection supplied by the shoe itself and no insulating element is to be put between the shoe inner and the foot of the person wearing it. If an insole is placed between the shoe inner and the foot, the electric properties of the shoe/ insole need to be verified.
