Yesterday, Professor Anne L'Huillier’s gave a masterful lecture on “The route to attosecond pulses” at Politecnico di Milano. The fifth woman to receive a #NobelPrize in #Physics. A source of inspiration for our female students and the new generation of researchers to foster collaboration and drive innovation in the pursuit of scientific excellence. Professor L’Huillier stood out for her pioneering research that unraveled the mysteries of ultrafast processes within atoms and molecules, providing insights into electron dynamics on #attosecond timescales. I’m proud to share that Politecnico di Milano has been collaborating with Professor L’Hullier and her group for years through the Attosecond Research Center of the Department of Physics - Politecnico di Milano. This collaboration is a reminder of the importance of #InternationalCooperation between universities. Sharing knowledge and engaging in joint research are good practices for achieving shared goals aimed at enhancing human well-being, promoting the common good, and facing imminent global challenges in technology, environment, and ethics. I wish to thank Professor Mauro Nisoli for his important contribution to the event as well as the Vice-Rector for Research Alberto Guadagnini.

Against the backdrop of #DesignWeek2024, Politecnico di Milano has organised several initiatives that integrate into the #SalonedelMobile ecosystem. Yesterday I had the honour of hosting Lord Norman Foster, star of architecture and CEO of Foster + Partners, at Politecnico di Milano. This unique event, organised in collaboration with Editoriale Domus S.p.A., focused on the relationship between individuals and the urban landscapes they inhabit. As Norman Foster said: “We shape our cities. They shape us”. The event marked the inaugural edition of a series of encounters with luminaries of international #architecture who will visit our university in the coming days of this special week. On the same day, we inaugurated INTERDEPENDENCE – Designing Relationships at Fabbrica del Vapore. The exhibition mixes and matches the projects of our students with those of 50 #design schools from all over the world, exploring the theme of Interdependence as a needed condition for cooperation and, consequently, for the common good. I wish to thank all those involved in the organization of these initiatives, and a special thanks to Professor Emilio Faroldi, Vice Rector at Politecnico di Milano, Professor Francesco Zurlo, President of the School of Design, and design.polimi.

I have been really glad to chair the 2024 U7+ Presidential Summit roundtable on “Human-centered AI: A Multidisciplinary Perspective for Policy Makers, Auditors, and Users”. With Shojiro Nishio, President of Osaka University, Patrick Awuah, President of Ashesi University, Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director of Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and Daniel Jutras, Rector of Université de Montréal, we discussed on the crucial role of #universities in preparing the next generation of leaders on the opportunities and challenges of #AI. With a focus on its impact not only on education, governments, industries and civil society, but also on reshaping our values and believes. The central question is not whether AI outperforms human intelligence, but whether we are able to preserve what is deeply and profoundly human. I wish to thank the Rector of Università Bocconi Francesco Billari for the hospitality and #U7Alliance.
Over 80 participants from 45 #universities around the world will convene in #Bocconi this week for the sixth Annual #U7+ Presidential #Summit with the aim of promoting the importance and impact of inclusive education, and facilitating global access, at the upcoming #G7 summit in June. The U7+ Presidential Summit is the annual meeting of the U7+ Alliance, the coalition of university presidents from Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Africa and Australia dedicated to defining concrete, collective actions universities can take to address global challenges. The Summit gives universities the opportunity to engage as global actors, in coordination with government leaders in G7 countries and beyond and weigh in on the challenges addressed at G7 Summits. Founded in 2019, the U7+ Alliance today includes 54 universities from 19 countries on 6 continents. “The U7+ alliance is fundamental to get universities’ voices heard at a global and multilateral level and with a really global participation at the meeting here in Milan this will be a unique opportunity,” says Catherine E. de Vries, Dean for International Affairs at Bocconi. “U7 aims in fact to tackle the most pressing global issues and engage with the G7 to make sure universities share knowledge and best practices to serve society at best.” The title of the meeting in Bocconi is ‘Inclusive #Education for #Inclusive Societies’ and discussions will center in fact on the value of facilitating global access to higher education, how it can foster more inclusive societies and promote prosperity, development and societal progress. All with the aim of providing G7 leaders with a constructive contribution of the higher education sector to the global agenda. “Economic and technological development and innovation are best served by the best and diverse minds and so it is crucial that universities promote inclusive education,” comments De Vries. “Universities do everything they can but there are some global issues that act as barriers to accessing higher education and that need to be tackled at a higher global level.” The summit will also tackle other pressing issues such as climate change and sustainability and the challenges and opportunities of AI. As with other Summits, participants will draw up a #Statement to be presented to the Italian government, who is hosting this year’s G7 Summit, with concrete recommendations and proposals for the G7 governments in view of their summit in June.

It has been a pleasure to host the President of École Polytechnique Laura Chaubard and its delegation at Politecnico di Milano to renew our Double Degree agreement. Now more than ever, European cooperation plays a key role in confronting the imminent global challenges and technological transformations against the backdrop of geopolitical tensions and unexpected risks and events. In this uncertain landscape, universities are responsible for educating and preparing their students, the leaders of tomorrow, in facing future challenges by equipping them with the right tools, in terms of competencies, knowledge, and social responsibility. Most important, it is our duty to pass on to the younger generation the sense of unity and belonging to a broader community that transcends geographical and cultural boundaries, and the importance of international collaboration. I am confident that Politecnico di Milano together with École Polytechnique can give a big contribution in this direction.

Yesterday, we hosted at Politecnico di Milano the #G7 Transport Academic Workshop “Planning for resilient transport systems”, anticipating the G7 Transport Ministers’ Meeting to be held in town over the next few days. The role of scientific research in the field of #transport and #mobility is pivotal to drive innovation towards a sustainable future, especially in terms of decarbonization and accessibility to public services. Politecnico di Milano plays a fundamental role both in teaching and research in this field. We were first in Italy in launching a Master’s Degree in Mobility Engineering together with some of the biggest companies in the sector, we have ranked in the top 10 universities in Mechanical, Aeronautical, and Manufacturing Engineering according to the QS World University Rankings, and we have large research infrastructures such as the Wind Tunnel where we conduct experiment research and several Joint Research Platforms. Not less important is MOST - Centro nazionale per la mobilità sostenibile, managing the whole organization of the workshop. #Most is one of the five National Centers funded by the NPRR as networks of universities, public research institutions, private and public actors engaged in highly qualified research. I wish to thank the Diplomaticc Advisor at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport Giovanni Donato for having joined us, Professor Pierluigi Coppola for having taken care of the organization of such an important meeting, and the President of MOST Ferruccio Resta.
For #G7Transport, MOST - Centro nazionale per la mobilità sostenibile and Politecnico di Milano co-hosted the academic workshop “Planning for Resilient Transport Systems”. A day of sharing and collaboration during which international researchers and stakeholders explored strategies and tools to address the uncertainty of the future, which directly impacts the transportation system. During the workshop, various topics were explored, ranging from the design principles and measures for network resilience to the decision-making and trade-offs, to focusing on policies and practices for mitigation and adaptation. From the analysis, the need for a paradigm shift in transportation planning emerged. Traditional approaches, known as "Predict and Provide," often overlook the high ambiguity characterizing the future, leading to wrong decisions and misleading outcomes. On the contrary, only by adopting adaptive policies will it be possible to adapt over time and change rapidly and gradually, as knowledge of the future progresses. This approach allows for better responses to critical events and changes in values and objectives that may occur. Furthermore, it is essential to establish shared and coordinated measures at both local and global levels, including action plans and operational intervention protocols to manage mobility in emergency situations. The goal is to be prepared to implement effective actions to contain the effects of shocks, accelerate recovery, and mitigate long-term effects. Only through a resilient approach can we address future challenges in the transportation sector. We would like to thank all the panelists who contributed to the workshop by sharing the results of their research and their vision.
L’Open Day è la scoperta.

In Italia mancano laureati e, in particolare, laureati nelle materie tecniche. Laureiamo circa 8.000 ragazzi e ragazze all'anno.
