We are honored to have Dr. Emmeline Edwards deliver a keynote speech for our plenary session on "Music and Arts-based Interventions in Medical and Health Contexts." Dr. Emmeline Edwards is director of the Division of Extramural Research of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). In that capacity, she is responsible for the development of scientific programs or areas of science that fulfill NCCIH's mission as well as planning, implementation, and policy. Currently, Dr. Edwards is Co-Chair of the trans-NIH Music and Health working group, a member of the Sound Health Initiative Steering Committee, and an advisor to the NeuroArts Blueprint. Dr. Edwards is also Chair of World Women in Neuroscience (WWN), an independent mentoring and networking organization, with the primary mission of identifying, and implementing mentoring and networking opportunities for women neuroscientists across the world. 💡 Keynote: "The NIH Toolkit for Music-based Interventions: A Path to Strengthening Evidence-based Research" Music-based Interventions (MBIs) have shown promise for managing symptoms of various brain disorders. To fully realize the potential of MBIs and dispel the outdated misconception that MBIs are rooted in “soft science,” the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is promoting rigorously designed, well-powered MBI clinical trials. The pressing need for guidelines for scientifically rigorous studies with enhanced data collection led to the creation of the NIH MBI Toolkit for research on music and health across the lifespan. The Toolkit defines the building blocks of MBIs, including a consolidated set of common data elements for MBI protocols, and core datasets of outcome measures and biomarkers for brain disorders of aging that researchers may select for their studies.

We are honored to have Prof. Felicity Baker, PhD deliver a keynote presentation for our plenary session on "Therapeutic Outcomes of the Arts"! Professor Felicity Baker is Associate Dean of Research for the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music and Director, International Research Partnerships for the Creative Arts and Music Therapy Research Unit at The University of Melbourne, and former Australia Research Council Future Fellow (2011-2015). She has attracted more than $18 million in research funding and is the author of over 150 publications. Her latest book is Leadership and Management of Clinical Trials in the Creative Arts Therapies, which is the first book to provide guidance on clinical trial implementation in this field. Her keynote is entitled "What is acceptable evidence? Immediate vs long-term effects of music therapy for people living with dementia" This presentation will draw on findings from her team’s completed randomised controlled trials to highlight the challenges CAT researchers experience in generating the research evidence needed to have scalable impact. Despite RCTs with sample sizes >300, long-term effects are difficult to show, especially when working with people with degenerative diseases where there are different dementia types, severities, rates of cognitive decline, and a lack of confirmatory diagnostic data. This contrasts with the observable immediate and short-term effects that are often more meaningful for consumers but challenging to capture using the standardised tools that are recognised by experts in the medical field. In her presentation, she will highlight the value of co-collecting short-term/immediate effects of CAT interventions alongside longer-term outcomes, and how the findings from immediate effects can be framed as evidence, inform future research designs, and refine intervention components.
