Description: Thallus endosubstratic, not evident or appearing as a greyish stain on the rock. Apothecia lecideine, dispersed or in small clusters, 1-3(-6) mm across, 0.3-1 mm high, strongly constricted at base to substipitate, the disc blackish red to black (red when wet), flat to slightly convex, epruinose, the margin black, thick, prominent, strongly crenulated and often splitting into sections, sometimes verrucose, tending to become thinner with age. Proper exciple up to 70(-80) µm thick laterally, black and carbonized in outer part, yellowish red within; epithecium yellow-brown, not carbonaceous, 10-15 µm high; hymenium colourless to pale yellow, 75-90(-115) µm high; paraphyses coherent, simple to sparingly branched, regularly septate, 1.7-2 µm thick at base, the apical cells 3.5 µm wide; hypothecium 60-100 µm high, brown in upper part (in thick sections), colourless with a reddish hue and obscured by calcium oxalate crystals in lower part. Asci >150-spored, clavate, strongly thickened at apex, the apical dome K/I-, the outer coat K/I+ blue. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, narrowly ellipsoid, 4-6 x 1-1.5(-2) µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on steeply inclined to rain-sheltered surfaces of hard, mineral-rich siliceous rocks, especially granite, mostly in fissures of the rock.
