Benazir Bhutto

Benazir Bhutto, 1989

On this day in 1988, Benazir Bhutto was named Prime Minister of Pakistan; she served in the role from 1988 to 1990 and again from 1993 to 1996, and was the first woman to head a democratic government in a Muslim majority nation.

Karsh had photographed Bhutto’s father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, in 1976. His sitting record reads: “Prime Minister of Pakistan. Photographed at request of Embassy of Pakistan, Ottawa.”
