Justice minister praises police, tells officers to serve as role models and reject racial profiling

Justice Minister George Savvides has praised members of law enforcement for their work during an unprecedented situation through the pandemic, calling on police officers to be polite and serve as role models.

Savvides, who wrote a letter addressing to all members of Cyprus Police, expressed his “deep sense of gratitude” as well as the government’s appreciation towards each and every member of law enforcement for showing “high sense of responsibility” in carrying out their duties.

The minister said he was pleased with the way front line officers have been dealing with citizens in an effort to enforce government decrees and protect public health against the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We are living through an unprecedented situation, stay polite, be discrete and remain tactful,” the minister said.

Savvides said he had no doubt that police officers were acting respectfully and professionally.

“I want you to continue with the same fervor and professionalism in upholding the law and protecting the rights and safety of all citizens without racial profiling,” the minister wrote.

The minister also reminded officers to follow hygiene guidelines rigorously and never let their guard down.
