Mimagoniates microlepis - (Blue tetra) and Mimagoniates barbei

Length: 2.4″ (6cm).

Aquarium Size: A small group would need a tank around 24″ x 15″ x 12″ (60cm x 37.5cm x 30cm) – 70 litres in size.

Temperature: Prefers slightly cool temperatures, in the range 64 – 74°F (18 – 23°C).

pH: 6.0 – 7.0

Hardness: 2 – 20°H

A tank designed around its natural waters could make an interesting project. It shares these flowing, well-oxygenated streams with some other species found in the hobby (see section below) and thus an attempt to replicate a “true” biotope is possible. Use sand as substrate, adding some smooth, water worn rocks and driftwood twigs/branches to create the desired effect. Placing the filter or spraybar at one end of the tank will provide flow, and locating them in such a way that the flow of water breaks the surface will supply additional oxygen.

Always buy a group of at least 6 of these, preferably 10 or more.

Note : Mimagoniates is a genus of Stevardiinae, a subfamily of tropical characid fish from Central and South America. Commonly known as croaking tetras or chirping tetras because they can produce sounds, some of these fish were formerly included in Glandulocauda. They have a supplementary breathing organ located above the gills which makes a faint chirping sound when these fish come to the surface to gulp air.
