  • Evergreen shrub, semi-deciduous in cold climates, upright, stiff, bushy with age, 5-7 ft (1.5-2.1 m) tall and as wide or wider.  Stems have 3-parted spines (thorns).  Leaves alternate, simple, elliptic-ovate, 2.5-5 cm long, some spines toward apex, dark green above and paler below, may be yellow-orange to red in fall.  Flowers small, yellow, appear in spring.  Fruit is dark red but usually absent.

  • Hardy to USDA Zone 5      A hybrid of B. julianae and B. thunbergii.
