Encalypta streptocarpa

Spiral Extinguisher-moss.

Encalypta streptocarpa with fern

I saw this one on walls above Abernethy (April, 2018) where it caught my eye because of the light green colour and the way the leaves look like little ears.

Encalypta streptocarpa clumpAfter puzzling over what it could be, I’ve settled on Encalypta streptocarpa.  There weren’t any capsules (which is what Encalypta mosses take their name from), but this fits in with streptocarpa, where capsules are rare.

“The book” confused me a little as the drawing of the leaves there shows a much more pointy tip.  But the picture in E. V. Watson’s British Mosses and Liverworts is more rounded and exactly like the leaves here.

The pale, opaque, matt appearance of the leaves fits in with the description in the book, and there is a nerve which ends just before the tip.

It seems to be widespread, so I’ll have to look out for it elsewhere.
