Phoenix sylvestris Silver Date Palm Tree
The Silver Date palm is native to India and Pakistan.
It has a gorgeous robust solitary trunk that can grow to 50 feet tall with an interesting deep orange diamond pattern created by leaf scars. Leaves are pinnate and silvery blue-green growing to 10 feet in length.
The Silver Date Palm is truly easy to grow. It thrives in a wide range of soils in full sun or partial shade, is drought tolerant, cold-hearty, and has light nutritional requirements. This palm can be grown all across the southern United States all the way up to Oregon on the west coast and the Carolina’s on the east coast where temperatures do not fall below 15°F.
Phoenix sylvestris is often compared to the beautiful Canary Island Date palm and though it does not get quite as large, it is every bit as attractive and much more trouble free. The spectacular Sylvester Date palm is one of the most popular palm trees in the world frequently used to landscape luxury homes, golf courses and roadsides. It is also used to make many medicines and food products. This trouble free, low maintenance, cold-hardy, stunning palm tree deserves a prominent position in all zone 8 landscapes and higher.
