The opening act in this film was perfect and thrilling. Sadly, it was the last interesting thing that happened in the film.

Taking Lives is a bit of a straggler/late entry in the mountain of films cynically attempting to cash in on the popularity of movies like Silence of the Lambs or Seven (the latter of which the opening credits here desperately attempt to evoke). It's clear from the outset that the film is more concerned with putting pieces on the board to get to what it thinks will be a mind blowing twist than it is with building atmosphere, mood or developing its characters. The most chaotic energy horror/thriller you’ll ever see. Someone needs to investigate Paul Dano because it’s quite concerning how well this man can play a creep.
Angelina Jolie is addictive when she plays an intelligent, inquisitive woman - though her character in Taking Lives is more grounded and reserved than her usual roles (The Tourist, Lara Croft). However, this didn't do much to give life to Taking Lives, even with support coming from Ethan Hawke and Keifer Sutherland (who barely spoke). The sound effects is commendable and that last sequence is a WTF moment that left my jaw hanging, but overall, Taking Lives is a predictable serial killer flick.
