Acknowledgments
We are grateful to Lubna H. Al-Kharusi (Director, Oman Marine Science and Fisheries Centre, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman) for the use of laboratory facilities, assistance in sampling and transportation, and accommodation at a branch of the Madrakah Laboratory, South Oman. Kunio Sasaki (Kochi University, Japan) read the initial manuscript, made available his unpublished manuscript dealing with Western Indian Ocean sciaenids and provided many valuable comments on sciaenid taxonomy. We are also indebted to the following for sampling assistance, radiographs, photographs, specimen loans and sciaenid ecological information: H. Al-Busaidi (Oman Marine Science and Fisheries Centre, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman) and F. Tanaka (MUFS). Graham S. Hardy (Ngunguru, New Zealand) provided assistance with the English. The study was partially supported (Southern Omani fish sampling) by the Ministry of Fisheries Wealth, Sultanate of Oman, and grants awarded to the first author by the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture, Japan (nos. 16570079, 19208019 and 20570091).
