A revision of the genus Medusanthera (Stemonuraceae, Icacinaceae s.l.)

  • Published:
Kew Bulletin Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

The genus Medusanthera (Stemonuraceae, Icacinaceae s.l.) is revised; eight species are recognised. Three new species are described and illustrated: Medusanthera megistocarpa Utteridge from New Guinea, M. howardii Utteridge from Fiji, and M. malayana Utteridge from Peninsular Malaysia. A key to the genus is given, and descriptions, conservation ratings, and distribution maps provided for each species; a list of exsiccatae is supplied.

This revision has taken place during a re-circumscription of family limits in the Icacinaceae, and is one component in a series of papers examining genera in the Stemonuraceae. My work has benefited immensely from discussions with Melanie Schori based at Ohio University, who is revising Gomphandra as part of her PhD. I am grateful to the directors and curators of the herbaria at A, BISH, BM, BO, E, GH, KEP, L, LAE, and SING for the loan of, or access to their collections. I thank Hazel Wilks for the illustrations of the new species, and Lucy Smith for the drawing of M. inaequalis reproduced here; Melanie Wilmot-Dear for translating the Latin diagnosis; Dick Brummitt and Rafaël Govaerts for nomenclatural advice; Justin Moat, and especially Steve Bachman, for their help in guiding me safely through the production of distribution maps and IUCN conservation status. Melanie Wilmot-Dear, Rogier de Kok and two anonymous reviewers provided useful comments on the manuscript.
