Abstract

Six new species of the genus Leptostylis are described: L. dentantipus n. sp. from the Southern Ocean, L. peruensis n. sp. from the Peru Trench, L. extendus n. sp. from the Weddell and Amundsen seas, L. levicarinatus n. sp. from the Weddell Sea, L. lacunatus n. sp. from the Brazil and Argentine basins and the north-western Weddell and Bellingshausen seas, and L. rasmi n. sp. from the western Weddell Sea. A determination key is provided for genera of the family Diastylidae with a short, globose and posteriorly swollen carapace, a long pereiopod 1 and a three-articulated uropod endopod.

Acknowledgments

Many thanks to the crew and helping/collecting colleagues on board of the RV ‘Meteor’ during the expedition DIVA III, and RV ‘Polarstern’ during the ANDEEP expeditions I to III and ANT XXVII/2. Dr. Stephanie Kaiser (DZMB, Wilhelmshaven) kindly allocated the cumacean material from the Amundsen and NW Weddell seas to me. Many thanks also go to Dr. Sabine Holst (DZMB, Hamburg) for help with the digital photography and Dr. Daniel Roccatagliata (Universidad de Buenos Aires), who kindly agreed to look through the manuscript and gave critical comments. Dr. Brigitte Ebbe (AWI, Bremerhaven) kindly reviewed the English manuscript. The comments of two anonymous referees helped to improve the text.

The working space was provided by the Zoological Museum, CeNak, University of Hamburg.
