Abstract
Infections of the central nervous system are potentially life-threatening and accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment remain critical to reducing mortality and morbidity. A pragmatic approach to interpreting the patterns of abnormal changes on imaging can help to narrow the differential diagnosis sufficiently to provide a diagnosis in the context of appropriate clinical information. Features of extra-axial and parenchymal infections of the brain, both focal and diffuse, are discussed with attention to specific characteristics where present.
