Cephalocarida: Living Fossil Without a Fossil Record

Part of the book series: Casebooks in Earth Sciences ((CASEBOOKS))

Abstract

The Cephalocarida (Sanders 1955) is a small class of crustaceans that has had major impact on phylogenetic studies of the subphylum. Among crustaceans, its morphology has been regarded as most primitive and thus most like that of the hypothetical crustacean ancestor (Sanders 1957, 1959a, 1959b, 1963a, 1963b; Hessler 1964, 1969; Cisne 1974, 1982; Hessler and Newman 1975; Manton 1977). As such, it has been especially influential in extrapolations on the origin of crustaceans and relationships with other taxa (Sanders 1957; Cisne 1974; Hessler and Newman 1975). Four aspects of the Cephalocarida loom large in these interpretations.
