Abstract
Dacrymycetes, a morphologically, chemically, and ecologically well-defined monophyletic group of wood-decaying Basidiomycota, is reviewed in this article. The life cycle of Dacrymyces stillatus is considered as representative of all members of the class. Traditional taxonomy is based on morphological characters. This classification is compared with molecular phylogenies. The evolutionary trends of dacrymycetaceous fungi are discussed.
