Abstract

Dumping syndrome is a long-term complication after stomach surgery. An accelerated emptying (“dumping”) of stomach contents into the small intestine seems to be the cause of the resulting symptoms. This can lead to two symptom complexes, the so-called early dumping and late dumping. The naming was done according to the temporal distance of the complaints to the previously eaten meal. Thus, early dumping occurs directly and up to 30 min after eating, whereas late dumping becomes symptomatic after about 120–180 min with hypoglycemia, generated by an inadequately high insulin secretion. In early dumping, the rapid influx of hyperosmolar food volume causes a quantitative fluid shift from the interstitium to the intestinal lumen, which leads to the corresponding symptoms.
