CT and MRI in Congenital Heart Diseases

Abstract

Transposition of great arteries (TGA) is a congenital heart abnormality in which the aorta arises from the right ventricle and the main pulmonary artery arises from the left ventricle. In complete TGA (CTGA), the morphological right atrium is connected to the morphological right ventricle which in turn is connected to the aorta. Similarly, the morphological left atrium is connected to the morphological left ventricle which in turn is connected to the pulmonary artery. Whereas in congenitally corrected TGA (CCTGA) the ventricles have switched atrial relationships.

This condition is defined by the connections rather than the spatial relationship of great arteries. Identification of the correct morphology is essential for the proper planning of surgery for which both CT scan and MRI are helpful. The complications associated with the surgery done for this condition are better studied by CT/MRI.
