Abstract
The insect pests of pineapple include the mealybug Dysmicoccus brevipes, pineapple scale Diaspis bromeliae, thrips Holothrips ananasi and Thrips tabaci, fruit fly Melanoloma canopilosum, rhinoceros beetle Oryctes rhinoceros, white grub Phyllophaga spp. and the slug caterpillar Latoia lepida. Non-insect pests include the mite Dolichotetranychus floridanus, root-knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica, root lesion nematode Pratylenchus brachyurus and reniform nematode Rotylenchulus reniformis. Vertebrate pests including rodents, monkeys, squirrels and birds are known to feed on ripe pineapple causing damage to the crop. Wild boar and porcupines cause crop loss by feeding the roots of the plants.
