Dieting in Pregnancy A Study of the Effect of a High Protein Low Carbohydrate Diet on Birthweight on an Obstetric Population

  • Conference paper
Carbohydrate Metabolism in Pregnancy and the Newborn 1978

Abstract

The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines dieting as “the feeding of a person or oneself on special food as a medical regimen or punishment”. It is with the former of the two reasons this paper is concerned. The recent growth in knowledge of the part played by nutrition in normal and abnormal biological processes in man has led to the increasing use of diet as a rational form of therapy. However, alterations in the diet of individuals, whether quantitative or qualitative, like any other therapeutic measure requires a thorough knowledge of any possible side effects.
