Abstract
No particular emphasis has been placed on the study of planktonic or benthic invertebrate community structure in relation to biotic or abiotic conditions in southern African lakes and reservoirs. Studies have not specifically attempted to analyse and interpret the composition or regional zoogeography of these assemblages. What follows below is a preliminary attempt to assemble information derived from a variety of studies with objectives generally inconsistent with the purpose to which their findings are presently being applied. It is accordingly superficial and incomplete, particularly as a result of taxonomic uncertainties, but it will hopefully stimulate more comprehensive and analytical investigations.
