Abstract

The names of copepods are divided into seven categories: (a) names based on classical or other mythology; (b) names based on modern personal names; (c) names derived from localities of discovery; (d) for parasitic species, names based on the names of their hosts; (e) names describing morphological or biological features: (f) names reflecting discoverer’s attitude to the discovered copepod; (g) names indicating systematic relationships of the copepod.

The existence of possible trends in the use of these categories is briefly discussed.
