Abstract

Alona stochi n.sp., a third blind cave-dwelling cladoceran from the Dinaric region, was found on several occasions in a small cave 30 km south-east of Ljubljana (Slovenia). It is related to Alona hercegovinae Brancelj, 1990 and A. sketi Brancelj, 1992. Several characters suggest that it belongs to a primitive group within the genus Alona.

A. stochi was found in a’ semi-cave’ environment, accompanied by a cave-associated fauna (Amphibia: Proteus anguinus, Decapoda: cf. Troglocaris schmidti, Copepoda: Troglodiaptomus sketi, Diacyclops tantalus, D. charon, Elaphoidella stammeri).
