Abstract
Arborescent bamboos. Rhizomes sympodium. Culms caespitose, erect, the top usually pendulous; internodes terete, culm walls thick, basal internodes nearly solid; sheath nodes prominent; culm nodes flat; intranodes usually with dense tomenta. Branches many, dominant branches conspicuous or not. Culm sheaths deciduous, leathery; auricles inconspicuous or absent; ligules conspicuous; blades reflexed. Many leaves per branchlet; auricles absent or inconspicuous; ligules developed; blades large. Flowering branches without leaves, pendulous, paniculate; pseudospikelets several to many clustered on nodes, when many clustered like capitate or globose; bracts 1–4, the upper most one without buds; pseudospikelets ovate or coniform, florets 1 to several, the top one usually sterile; rachilla short, not disarticulated; glumes 1–3, ovate, apex acute or with a cusp, veins many; lemma large and broad; palea 2-keeled, or without keels; lodicules absent, or occasionally with reduced lodicules 1–3; stamens 6, filaments free; ovary petiolate or sessile, globose or ovate, pubescent, style 1, stigma 1, seldom 2 or 3, plumose. Caryopses cystocarp-like or nut-like. New shoots late summer to early autumn. Flowering late spring and summer.
