Volodichthys gen. nov. new species of the primitive snailfish (Liparidae: Scorpaeniformes) of the southern hemishpere. Description of new species V. Solovjevae sp. nov. (Cooperation Sea, the Antarctic)

Abstract

Description of a new Volodichthys gen. nov. snailfish genus (type species — C. parini Andriashev et Prirodina) is given. The new genus includes five species: V. catherinae (Andriashev et Stein), V. herwigi (Andriashev), V. parini (Andriashev et Prirodina), V. smirnovi Andriashev, and a new V. solovjevae sp. n. species. They are the most primitive among the family in the southern hemisphere and considered to be the closest to North Pacific Bathyphasma Gilbert, 1896. The new species has been described based on two types of specimens that were caught at the depth of 990–2012 m in the mesobathybenthal of the Cooperation Sea.
