Grit & Groundedness: A Shepherd Camp 2023 Recap

Grit & Groundedness: A Shepherd Camp 2023 Recap
Little Creek Shepherd Camp 2023

As the hustle and bustle of modern life continues to overwhelm us, seeking moments of groundedness and connection with nature has become increasingly essential. In 2022, Little Creek Shepherd Camp - based in Townsend, Montana - emerged to do that for groups of women looking to experience the highs and lows of lambing season first hand.  Year one was such a hit that we did it again this spring, welcoming two groups to Little Creek HQ for hands on learning and community building. Let's relive the highlights that made Shepherd Camp 2023 magic for all!

Welcome to camp! Lodging was cozy. We spent nights at Flynn's cabins down the road, and days at Little Creek HQ immersed with the sheep flock! Our central wall tent serves as a gathering spot, teaching tent, and snack central. We learned all the essentials about lambing and how to take care of the flock day-to-day.

Immersive Activities: Shepherd Camp offered a plethora of immersive activities designed to build skills and plug in to ranch life and nature. Lacey led us through an unforgettable natural hide tanning seminar, and Julie taught us all about herding dogs. Heather came to demonstrate sheep shearing, and Caroline led the group through tagging, banding, and vaccinating new lambs.

Skill building: it's been the experience of so many women that ranching is a hard field to break into. It's not the logistics, it's the culture. Often in ranching there is more of a focus on doing rather than teaching. Shepherd Camp aims to change that. We take our time learning new skills, and make sure attendees feel supported and encouraged to step out of their comfort zones. In between the workshops and daily chores to care for the flock, each weekend experienced live lamb births - something few people ever get to experience.

Shepherd Camp 2023 proved to be an unforgettable experience, offering a harmonious blend of adventure, mindfulness, and environmental stewardship. So many deep conversations were had around the campfire and dinner table, and so many memories made. We're already looking forward to next year! We expect to announce dates and applications for 2024 this coming fall, so stay tuned! We'd love to welcome you to Little Creek Shepherd Camp.
