HOLLYHOCK 'French' --Malva sylvestra mauritania--

HOLLYHOCK 'French' --Malva sylvestra mauritania--

AKA "Common Mallow" in Europe, this 4" shrub has glossy, dark green foliage and gorgeous purple-veined showy pink flowers. Seeds are called "cheeses" for the similarity of their appearance to cheese wheels and have been used to make dyes. Boiled young leaves were eaten as a vegetable in the 1800s. Full sun to part shade, well drained soil, tolerates poor soil. Deadhead vigilantly to avoid prolific seedlings.
