It's for women. As they say, "chicks dig it." The decor is very feminine, with the gild, the Budda statue on altar, the freshly squeezed juice concept, the comfortable setting, the terribly dimmed lighting, and the indoor plants, it's a wonderful place to hang out with your best of the best girlfriends, have a nice girlie drink and just chill for a bit.
I am not a drinker. Terribly afraid of liquor. Or as my people in my life call me, "the cheap date". But this place got a good vibe, for women, girls, chicks, and all the above. I also like that it has a lot of choices of liquor, it certainly is no Hopscotch fancy pants (known for their liquors and Japanese Whisky), but it has a lot of girlie drinks. We did the fig and hot banana margies, very tasty and totally mellow. Late afternoons are the best. My girlfriend who lives on Lake, not too far from here, would have liked it here, to get away from the kiddies, she'd find this a good alternative to gather with her fellow girlfriends, to commiserate over the child rearing's ups and downs, sharing exactly what level of swimmers their kids are at Le Petit Baleen, and discussing the varies challenges in life as a married career woman n' mother. They will also be self-congratulatory of their own milestones, achieved and surpassed.
I envision many women over 40s coming here on a weekend afternoon, sipping fruity drinks and talking about their kids' hot teachers in elementary school, bragging about the super dads in their lives when secretively wished the dads were still into them as they once did before the children were born. (No, the dads are almost certain pining over some old girlfriend whom he did not end up with, and is still hot, as the dads learned recently after the said hot woman and he have been reacquainted through social media...)
But I'm mostly just enjoying the atmosphere of this low key bar, the low ceiling and partially sunken in floor reminds me European bars, like the ones you'd find in Prague and Berlin.
I expect a return of some sorts, with my lady friends, doing exactly what I envisioned above.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Nov 30, 2010
$6 Pimme's! What a STEAL.
I love that the juices are fresh, but the mixologists are nothing like the ones at Bourbon or Burritt - drinks are less well balanced.
Oh, and don't get the "Vodka Salad." It literally tastes like a liquid salad with vodka.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Josie M.San Mateo, CA99168536Feb 13, 2017Updated review
RIP Kelly.
Lots of history & memories at this neighborhood spot. I hope they find a way to reopen it.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Mar 6, 2012Previous reviewwell kept secret - they regularly update their margaritas with fresh seasonal fruits.
my favorites:
mango margarita - with muddled mango and spicy chili salt. LOVE the spicy salt.
peach margarita - tons of peach at the bottom, like a spiked fruit salad, watch out!
jalapeno margarita - YIKES! talk about heat. if you want the savory in your drink, this is the one.
all the fresh fruit makes me feel less guilty about all that tequila (and boy, talk about a generous pours.)
it's "healthy!"Oct 25, 2011Previous reviewcongratulations on making it onto the 1st sfeater DRINK LIST! xoxo

SWEET TUESDAYS!
NAKED WEDNESDAYS!
half price off refreshing iced tea vodka with mint drinks and the other one, i dunno what it is but supposedly you end up naked, which is always a good, nay AWESOME way to close the night.
the bartenders are all friendly and HOT. the owner kelly, often seen nursing a carefully prepped margarita by the bar is a sweet and adorable man, full of good conversation and wisdom of the alcoholic beverage kind.Mar 14, 2011Previous reviewi've finally made lion pub my neighborhood bar. it only took about 5 years, but hey better late then never.
i like to go when it's chill and not busy:
on a weekday
for happy hour
before 9 on the weekends
the crowd is an eclectic mix and that's what makes it interesting. i suspect they recently bleached the floors, it smells much better now.Nov 1, 2010Previous reviewman.
what would i do for a cold glass of blue moon with a slice of orange?
watch the giants playoffs on an old school 24 inch tube television set from behind the bar, so tiny you can't even see the score.
meanwhile, breathing through my mouth because the overpowering smell of bathroom & floor cleaner has me begging for a 2nd & 3d round.
they need a new television set & new floors. still, i hearts.Jan 25, 2007Previous reviewmy local watering hole. i like to come here for the mojitos made with fresh strawberries/ rasberries/ blueberries/ [insert fruity item here]. they also make greyhounds with fresh grapefruit juice - YUM!
and of course when i'm here i go postal on the free platter of carrots, hummus, cheese and crackers, even though they are probably full of a zillion bacteria from all the flying fingers just like they say about the cups of pretzels or peanuts you find at local bars. YUM!
PS. They serve Blue Moon beer here! It's my favorite (and actually the only beer that I drink) and very hard to find in bars. RAD! - 127033553288Jun 19, 2016
What a fun place to hang out and grab drinks, both for small and large groups. My friend and I came here on a weekday afternoon for happy hour. We were dizzied by the illegible menu scribbled on the mirrors at the bar, but then there was bartender Eddy to the rescue. This guy is hilarious and treated us like regulars.
My first drink was a strawberry mango mojito which was jam-packed with fruits and mint. My (male) friend had also ordered a mojito (except with blueberries) but his tasted way stronger in comparison. I can handle my alcohol! Anyways, after that I just order my usual whiskey, neat. Eddy was introducing me to a new scotch, whose name I can't remember... but that ultimately did the trick.
I love that the entrance to Lion Pub is somewhat concealed, and the decor matches the theme pretty well. The lack of a real menu forces you to have a conversation with the bartender (which is awesome) and talk about what drink you're in the mood for. Would come here again!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Veronica M.San Francisco, CA16758351823Sep 15, 2015
The dreary weather yesterday reminded me of The Lion Pub.
For why, you ask?
The fireplace. SF is not only a town where you can wear cashmere all year round, but it's also a town that you can benefit from a fireplace all year round.
I don't know about you, but I think that fireside cocktails when it's chilly out are a very good thing.
The Lion Pub is a great bar, too.
For why, you ask?
The juice. These guys use fresh squeezed juices in all their concoctions. We've come to expect nothing less at places like The Alembic & Beretta, but a low key neighborhood joint? Not so much. Major props.
The great bartenders. Not only are they cool & personable, they're stand up too. Once, I used one of their outlets to charge my phone, & I forgot the charger when I left. Naturally, I have more than one charger, so it wasn't a big deal. But you know how it is w Apple products; of course it'd be nice to get it back. I called a couple of days later, knowing it was a long shot. They said they had it. I came in a week later...& it was still here. For real?! Major props.
The happy hour. The cheese plate! This cheese plate is extraordinary. It's more like a hotel lobby wine & cheese hour plate. And it's free?! Major props.
One negative. Sometimes, the smell. Stale liquor/beer smell. It's understandable w the busy bars, but it's just not a good thing.
Still, 5 stars.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Sebastian F.San Francisco, CA50311071272Oct 4, 2014
Nice little (more or less) hidden neighborhood bar in Pacific Heights. Modern decor, ambient vibe, fireplace, great bar. They do their drinks with freshly squeezed juice and that alone is something to come back for!
I loved the Strawberry Mango Mojito and the Greyhound (grapefruit, vodka) which was nicely balanced and refreshing. So, if you love fresh juice and booze, this is your place!
No surprise it can get mad on a Friday/Saturday night but hey, the drinks and the interior are worth it.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - Jackie B.Elk Grove, CA15914Jun 1, 2015
My date and i loved this plave. came in around 5 ish or so on a friday to try out their muddled drinks. Eddy was bartebding (hope thats how you spell his name) had a strawberry mango mojito and the muddled fruit was amazing in this drink. They even squeeze (or press) their juices. Everything tasted super amazing and fresh.
Eddy gave great service.
Came again after work after 12 am and they were nicely filled in. Even though we were told it was a slow nice. Still enjoyed the little time here.
Only down fall is when my date asked for a top shelf long island, for some reason the bartender decided it needed whiskey. A lot of it. Made it very hard to drink. We appreciated the effort though. LolHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - E F.San Francisco, CA2815239May 23, 2015
The muddled fruit drinks here are pretty damn awesome and the cocktail menu is creative in a very delicious way.
Come with a crew on a weeknight or weekend. The vibe is hit or miss. Usually really fun but you never know what type of bar crowd will be there and the place often has a weird smell (your queue to drink more and care less).
I like the jalapeño vodka cocktail. It has a lot of kick so approach with caution.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - matt m.San Francisco, CA20419849Nov 16, 2007
I lied, and I'm sorry.
There was a time in my life when I stated the Tunnel Top* had the best Mojito in the city, but upon my recent visit to Lion's Pub I have changed my mind. Admittedly, I am more of a beer guy...but I've been known to get a little foo-foo at times and enjoy a Mojito or two.
Hell, I'll even wear tights & a mask if the occasion is right.
The Strawberry Mojito at this joint is made with fresh EVERYTHING, and you can taste just how awesome it is... They also make a mean-ass Greyhound, with freshly squeezed Grapefruit Juice--prices are a little high on the specialty drinks though.
I've heard stories about this place and the overwhelming amount of weekend douchebaggary, which leads me to believe if you want a decent time at this spot you should simply visit them during the week.
Here's to foo-foo drinks & Mike the kickass curly-haired bartender...Rosie F and I thought he was top notch.
