After biking, I was hungry for breakfast and knowing that this place has breakfast, I decided to stop by here.
Perusing their small menu, I decided on French Toast. For $3, I received four good and thick slices made with their shop-made bread. They were somewhat soggy because of the airy bread - but the bread was good, regardless. The slices were drizzled with honey and powdered sugar. Needless to say, I was full in the end, and was glad I had a good homey breakfast.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Aug 30, 2008Previous reviewCASH ONLY; 7:30 AM to 2 PM Mondays to Fridays
I visited here simply because this is practically the only place you could eat in Park West neighborhood of downtown Miami during the day time (it's still largely an undeveloped area). It's a good and quick spot to stop by for breakfast (basic egg dishes), sandwiches, pizza, salads, and coffee.
It's a small shop that primarily does business as a caterer, baker, and wholesale pasta-maker for Tiramesu, Le Bon, Spris, and whatever other restaurants belong to that particular restaurant-empire.
However, such connections would should guarantee food being good - and to date I haven't had anything that would cause me to complain. My sandwich was filling, fresh and was $8 in total including the coffee and Doritos chip (I know, the Doritos were not very creative).
Price-conscious, clean-interior, and within walking distance of the well-known CIFO art gallery (at least in Miami's art circles), this place is a good addition to the bleak club-land that dies when the sun rises. - Laura G.Bologna, Italy5719378Mar 8, 2010
Getting to Spuntino was a real pain in the patootie, but so worth it.
We initially found out about this place when having breakfast in Cafe Van Dyke and asked about the amazing bread we were being served. Spuntino provides them, and a few other restaurants in Miami, with fresh-baked bread on a daily basis.
We called ahead and asked for directions, "Turn at the Godrush," he said.
On 11th we turned into the small street before the Godlrush and were chased down by two men that can only be described as "shady."
We tried parking in the public parking lot under the highway and were soon threatened with "if yall park hear yo' ca' s'gunna get slit. Park he'r and I'll make sur not'n happens..."
We thanked them, rolled up (why do people say "rolled up" if windows are electric now?) our windows and screeched though their parking lot as fast as we could, crossing though their parking lot, barely fitting though their half-closed exit gate (MiniCoopers!) and on to the street where Spuntino is.
We almost went home but since I was set on trying their french toast (THANS ALOT MARIA). We drove a little further and parked at a PayNPark.
We walked in and were soon greeted by "you're the girl who called, rite?"
the place is fairly small, it is marked by two umbrellas and a red awning. Inside there is a counter that runs along the wall and a bar in front of the register. Very cute and cozy place.
After some chatting, we ordered an Orangina, a cappuccino, my *must have, came all the way here for this* french toast and a Parma sandwich with a "secret sauce."
All of a sudden a TA-TA-TANNN moment occurred, we were looking around the shop and saw no trace of a credit card machine.
We started scavenging around for cash, but were unable to find a single dollar.
We panicked. The owner kindly offered to comp our meal -since we had driven so far to try the food. We thanked him about a million times and he told us not to worry about it.
It is really hard to find that level of kindness in this city, we were amazed.
As he prepared our meal, I found a $20! We were so relieved. Either way we would have probably ran around downtown trying to find an ATM to pay him back.
Two plates of goodness were placed in front of us.
My french toast were made with a brioche bread, drizzled with honey (not maple) and slices of butter! Real butter! They were fantastic, and they were $3!
But nothing beats my GF's sandwich. The Parma- prosciutto and fontina on foccacia. Fantastic.
It all came out to about $14.95 so we left the $20. It was definitely an experience and I highly recommend this place even if it's a bit out of the way.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - Maria A.Miami, FL20737801332Nov 17, 2009Updated review
I must recently be on a french toast kick. But whatever is happening just think of me as the official un-official french toast taster.
I'd actually read Jordan N's reviews and thought about the french toast. The picture he uploaded scarcely sum up the decadence.
Let's begin with the freshly made bread. Cooked on the spot. Drizzled with honey, powdered sugar, and butter. The bread is almost like a Cuban bread. This leads to a very soft bread. Still, it's absolutely delicious and makes you want to come back tomorrow for the $3 breakfast o the gods.
Why not 5 stars? Because they should have a steady set schedule.Helpful 10Thanks 0Love this 8Oh no 0Oct 23, 2009Previous reviewThe words insider and hidden gem are the only way to describe this place and they scarcely do it justice.
I guarantee you've driven by this place before and most likely numerous times and never noticed this tiny cafe. With hours between 8am - 2pm Mon-Fri it has a less than accommodating schedule. Still, if you're one of the fortunate ones to slip in here you'll be happy to discover this catering company's front of house, sleepy, little cafe is quiet and underground.
As previously mentioned the space is small and thanks to some odd furniture and equipment set up, you might feel like you're dining in the thick of it all. So if you can get past that or thick it's kinda cool to peak behind the curtains then go ahead and order breakfast or lunch. Start off with an extremely affordable breakfast with the $3 french toast?! Or stop by for pizza, sandwiches, empanadas, or just a good shot of espresso or a frothy cappuccino.
I'm just crossing my fingers in the hopes that they expand those hours to add a Sunday mini-brunch. - Kevin Z.Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, FL12454Jan 19, 2011
I have to work in this area a few times a year and have never looked around for a lunch place. There never seemed to be anything walking distance, until I found Yelp. Thanks to other Yelpers reviewing this restaurant, I now have a great place for a sandwich.
The shop layout is simple. Bar on the outside wall, counter facing the cook. There were a couple tables that might be used when its busier, but were pushed up to the wall.
There was another group of people who go there just before me, and they were ordering. The cook was obviously very accommodating, after listening to what the woman was in the mood for he said he would make her something special. She was looking for a salad but with this and not that and some of this other thing. He worked his magic.
I ordered the Popeye, a turkey sandwich with deviled egg and spinach. I told him that he should make it how ever he wanted. That turned out to be one of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten. The mixture of the flavours made me anticipate every bite. The fact that my lunch, sandwich, latte, and chips was only $8.50 made it even better.
I would seriously consider this place for a lunch trip. It isn't in the nicest area but it is well worth it. If only it was closer to my home!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - In S.Miami, FL029Feb 18, 2010
Being new to the neighborhood I had to check this place out. To say it's small is an understatement. To say the food is "good" is another understatement.
The only seating in the place is at a wall-mounted bar around the perimeter of the room. But everything else, from the cordial service to the flavor of the coffee and food, blows the house down! And so inexpensive, too.
Fortunately, this place is walking distance to my home so I can fill up on a fresh, tasty, inexpensive meal often. And I will!Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Christine M.Floral Park, NY01Oct 27, 2010
I've never been to the bakery, this review is solely based on the catering aspect of the business. We used Spuntino for my sisters' bridal shower this past weekend, they came highly recommended.
The food was delicious, but we couldn't enjoy the left-overs because the servers threw out the food. For some reason it is "policy" of the company to throw stuff out. Seems a little wasteful to me, especially when its not their food once everything is paid for. They claim to have asked someone what to do with the food, but everyone who was at the party said they were never asked. We spent a decent amount of money on catering for 15 people, so needless to say my mom wasn't to pleased when she found all this out.
She contacted the woman in charge, who was "embarrassed" by the situation, and was going to find a way to rectify the situation. After exchanging e-mails, her solution was to refund us the cost of 2 meals, even though it was clear that more than that was thrown out. This was her solution without ever talking to anyone involved on the phone, but instead through e-mails. The workers claim they asked someone what to do with the food, but we were never told who that person was. In the world of "customer is always right" its hard to believe that this is the policy at Spuntino. Instead of listening to their customers, they have done what is best for their employees. Even though they are clearly in error, the people at Spuntino refuse to do anything more to rectify the situation.
It's been nothing but excuses and "regrettable errors" on their part since day one of trying to find a solution to this problem.
I would personally NEVER recommend Spuntino to anyone.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
