Halar® Coatings by Solvay

Halar® ECTFE is a popular coating material with both excellent chemical resistance and excellent corrosion resistance due to its unique combination of properties. Halar coatings are resistant to strong mineral and oxidizing acids, metal etchants, liquid oxygen, alkalis, and essentially all organic solvents except hot amines. Halar ECTFE, a copolymer of ethylene and chlorotrifluoroethylene, is a semi-crystalline melt processable partially fluorinated polymer.

Halar ECTFE coatings have been used successfully by coating applicators for fire safety and corrosion protection of exhaust duct systems that must meet the FM4922 fire safety standard. Halar-coated ductwork offers exceptional surface smoothness reducing or eliminating buildup and corrosion.

KEY HALAR COATING PERFORMANCE PROPERTIES

Chemical Resistance Properties
Halar exhibits excellent barrier properties; 10 to 100 times better than those of PTFE or FEP to oxygen, carbon dioxide, chlorine gas or hydrochloric acid. Halar resists a wide variety of corrosive chemicals and organic solvents, including strong acids, chlorine and aqueous caustics.

Electrical Properties
The dielectric constant of Halar coatings is low and stable across a broad temperature and frequency range. The dielectric strength is 2000V/mil (80 kV/mm) in 1 mil thickness.

Flammability
Halar meets UL 94 V-O flame test in thicknesses as low as 7 mils (0.175 mm). When placed in a flame, unlike most thermoplastics, Halar coatings do not melt or drip. Char is formed, which serves as an oxygen and heat transfer barrier. On removal of flame, it immediately extinguishes. Halar coatings will not ignite or propagate flame in atmospheres which contain up to 52% of oxygen. In addition, Halar has excellent low smoke properties.

Machinability
Halar ECTFE is a thermoplastic material and easily machined with machinability similar to Nylon.

Mechanical Properties
Halar possess excellent mechanical properties over a wide range of temperatures from cryogenic to 300°F (150°C). It has nylon-like durability and provides excellent impact resistance at ambient and sub ambient temperatures. Halar has good tensile, flexural, and wear-related properties.

Purity
Static soak testing in Ultra-Pure Water (UPW) and High Purity Chemicals show extremely low levels of metallic and organic extractables. Additional dynamic rinse data also validates Halar as a material suitable for high purity systems in the semiconductor, biotech, and pharmaceutical industries.

Thermal Properties
Halar ECTFE fluoropolymer is UL certified for use in non-load bearing applications requiring continuous service at temperatures to 300°F (150°C).

HALAR COATINGS MARKETS AND APPLICATIONS

High Purity Applications
Static soak testing conducted on Halar in ultrapure water and high purity chemicals shows extremely low levels of metallic and organic extractables. Additional dynamic rinse data validates Halar coatings as suitable for high purity systems in the semiconductor, biotech, and pharmaceutical industries. Halar exhibits very low fluoride ion leach out.

Exhaust Duct Coatings
Halar coated stainless steel exhaust duct systems are designed to handle a wide range of corrosive exhaust streams found in a variety of industrial applications, including clean rooms. Halar provides the following benefits to exhaust ducting:

  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • Excellent corrosion resistance
  • Outperforms plastic and FRP duct with improved safety and corrosion resistance
  • Reduction or elimination of the buildup of salt deposits and debris that can reduce airflow. Approved by Factory Mutual for use in fume and smoke exhaust systems without sprinklers.

Pulp & Paper Industry
Halar ECTFE has a history of success as a protective coating in aggressive environments due to the fact that it is not sensitive to pH, moisture, or strong oxidizers and it is not attacked by a broad variety of chemicals. Halar powder coatings deliver seamless and smooth corrosion protection.

Semiconductor
Halar ECTFE coatings meet stringent standards for purity, chemical resistance, and thermal stability demanded on semiconductor processing equipment and in clean rooms. It is widely used in the semiconductor industry on vessels, process equipment, racking/fixturing devices, and exhaust duct systems. Halar purity, surface smoothness, chemical resistance, & fire resistance are key characteristics for the semiconductor market.

Fluid Handling Systems
Delivery, storage, filtration and processing are some of the steps integral to a fluid handling system. Halar ECTFE is widely used by industrial coating applicators on components used in the fluid handling industry because of its superior ability to withstand extreme chemicals and temperatures. Halar coatings are the best choice for key components such as: valves, pipe, tanks, vessels, and heat exchangers.

Waste Disposal
Waste products from many industries are likely to be corrosive, ignitable, reactive and/or toxic. Halar ECTFE offers superior performance and resistance to acids used in etching, stripping and cleaning processes, as well as abrasion resistance to slurries and effluents. Storage containers, piping and fittings, agitators, valves and other components coated with Halar provide reliable performance for waste disposal systems.
