Appena si entra nella Cappella dei Principi non si può fare a meno di rimanere affascinati dai colori e dalla varietà di marmi, pietre dure e madreperla che decorano la pavimentazioni e le pareti.

Marmi e graniti colorati, porfidi, rossi di Barga, lapislazzuli dell’Afghanistan, verdi di Corsica, diaspri, alabastri, quarzi, coralli sapientemente intarsiati dall’Opificio delle Pietre dure per creare motivi e decorazioni incredibili.

Anche la decorazione della cupola però è degna di nota ed è proprio di quella che oggi voglio raccontarvi qualcosa. Fu affrescata da Pietro Benvenuti fra il 1828 e il 1837, un pittore aretino che fu molto influenzato nella sua prodizione dall’artista francese Jacques-Louis David.

Il Benvenuti decorò la cupola con le Storie della Genesi, scene della Vita di Cristo e con il Giudizio Universale.

Nello specifico le scene della Genesi riguardano la creazione dei progenitori, il Peccato Originale, la morte di Abele e il Diluvio Universale mentre quelle relative alla vita di Cristo sono la Natività, la Crocifissione e la Resurrezione ma non è finita qua.

Aguzzando la vista vedrete che anche l’anello ottagono più vicino alla lanterna che fa da lucernario è suddiviso in esagoni completamente dipinti. Sebbene sia difficile riuscire a distinguere i vari soggetti da terra, proprio in quegli esagoni il Benvenuti raffigurò i quattro Evangelisti e i quattro Profeti.

La prossima volta che entrerete nella preziosa Cappella dei Principi, oltre ai marmi policromi e alle superbe pietre dure, alzate lo sguardo per osservare la cupola dipinta.

Chapel of the Princes: the frescoes of the dome

As soon as you enter the Chapel of the Princes you cannot help but be fascinated by the colors and the variety of marble, semi-precious stones and mother-of-pearl that decorate the floors and walls.

Colored marble and granite, porphyry, red from Barga, lapis lazuli from Afghanistan, green from Corsica, jasper, alabaster, quartz, coral expertly inlaid by the Opificio delle Pietre hard to create incredible motifs and decorations.

Specifically, the scenes of Genesis concern the creation of the progenitors, the Original Sin, the death of Abel and the Universal Flood while those relating to the Life of Christ are the Nativity, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection but it is not over here.

If you look closely, you will see that the octagon ring closest to the lantern that acts as a skylight is also divided into fully painted hexagons. Although it is difficult to distinguish the various subjects from the ground, it is in those hexagons that Benvenuti depicted the four Evangelists and the four Prophets.
