Het eenoogkreeftje (Cyclops) is een bekende bewoner van vijvers, een klein wezentje, waarvan we hier de larve van zien. De nauplius larve.
We noemen larvale vormen van kreeftachtigen in het algemeen nauplius (meervoud nauplii). Deze larven bestaan uit een kop deel en een staart deel, het telson genoemd.
Nauplii hebben een enkelvoudig oog dat in het midden van de kop ligt, het naupliaire oog. Omdat het geen oog in de zin van een lens en een retina is, maar alleen een lichtgevoelig orgaantje is, wordt het een ocellus genoemd. Een ocellus is een zogenaamd enkelvoudig oog dat bij talrijke diergroepen voorkomt en dat licht en donker kan onderscheiden van elkaar. De visuele prestaties van een ocellus zijn ver onder samengestelde ogen, die bij veel insecten voorkomen.
Ook zie je drie paar aanhangsels bij de nauplius, die in het volwassen dier antennes en monddelen van de Cyclops gaan worden. Nu, in deze larvale fase, bewegen de larven zich schoksgewijs voort met deze aanhangsels, die als roeispanen tegelijkertijd door het water slaan.
Het is boeiend dat de larve 3 paar zwemarmpjes bevat, terwijl kreeftachtigen meer poten hebben. Het aantal poten bij de kreeftachtigen is meestal 10, maar kan ook 14 bedragen.

Er zijn duidelijke verschillen in de bouw tussen de larven van verschillende eenoogkreeftjes, dat is duidelijk te zien op de afbeelding hiernaast. We zien weer de kenmerkende aspecten van deze larfjes, namelijk de 3 paar roeipoten en tussen de eerste paar roeipoten (die later de kaken van de Cylcops worden) zit het ocel, het niet samengestelde oogje.
Deze nauplius heeft veel meer een eivorm dan de nauplius die boven afgebeeld staat, en die meer een tennis racket vorm heeft.
Er zijn 400 soorten Cyclopsen, en het op naam brengen van al deze verschillende kreeftjes is een super gespecialiseerd werkje. Boeiend is om te weten dat in 1941 een aantal biologen de eenoogkreeftjes in de grachten van Amsterdam geïnventariseerd hebben: AMSTERDAM’S PLANKTONCRUSTACEA IN HET JAAR 1941. geïnventariseerd hebben.
Cyclopsen behoren bij het genus Copepoda (Kop-potigen).
