Deoccupation War with Russia

The Armed Forces of Ukraine have already liberated more than half of the territories that Russia seized after February 24, 2022.

Such conclusions were reached by OSINT researcher DefMon, who had been compiling maps of combat operations in Ukraine since the first days of the war.

According to his calculations, after the clearing of the right bank of the Dnipro River, the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated 52.5% of territory occupied by Russia since February 2022.

As of November 14, 2022, according to DefMon, Ukrainian forces have liberated almost 78,000 km² of their territory.

Almost 71,000 km² occupied after February 24 remain under Russian occupation. This territory includes several settlements of the Mykolaiv region (villages of the Ochakiv community on the Kinburn Spit), the left-bank part of the Kherson region, the occupied part of the Zaporizhzhia region, some settlements of the Kharkiv region and the territories of the Donbas.

In general, up to 120,000 km² remain under Russian occupation, including the “ORDLO” (the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions along the demarcation line until February 24) and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. This is almost 20% of the territory of Ukraine.

The researcher notes that at the peak of the occupation campaign, the Russians managed to occupy almost 200,000 km² (together with ORDLO and Crimea).

In total, the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated 39% of all occupied territories during the counteroffensive.

Documenting the real situation based on open data is not easy, so these calculations can be approximate, but they reflect the general state of affairs.

The key stages of the liberation of the territory of Ukraine were: the expulsion of the Russians from Mykolaiv; withdrawal of the Russian Armed Forces under the threat of defeat and encirclement from Kyiv, as well as the entire territory of Zhytomyr, Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy regions; the battle for Kharkiv was won; expulsion of the Russians from the Zmiinyi Island; Balakliia-Kupiansk offensive; the liberation of Sviatohirsk and Lyman and the offensive on Svatove-Kreminna; and liberation of Kherson.

Now the offensive actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are taking place in Luhansk region. Recently, the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated the village of Makiivka.
