Rhetorical Analysis in Advertisement
The image I have chosen is an advertisement for a product of Burger King, a well-known fast food chain restaurant. This image was posted on Google images, it was printed by a local Singaporean advertising firm and this was published in 2009. In the image you can see a young beautiful women with short hair and red lipstick, with her mouth and eyes wide open staring directly at a seven inch long hamburger. Below the image in big words there is a quote which says "IT'LL BLOW YOUR MIND AWAY" along with "BK SUPER SEVEN INCHER" in all capitals.
The target audience for this advertisement can be anybody but it appeals a lot more to men. The image shows pathos; it is obvious that they are trying to lead customers think that it is related to sex. Since the sexuality is used in this advertisement, the purpose of this visual created was to attract men's attention and make them want to try this seven inch long hamburger like the woman in this picture get surprised.
For logos, there is a full image of the "BK Super Seven Incher” below the woman and show the audience that what a hamburger looks like and next to the image, there is an explanation of this product and shows what kind of ingredients it contains and a price of combination too. They are persuading people by displaying the fact of their product. Also, showing consumers that fact gives credibility and it is linked to ethos.
When I saw this image I felt this is strongly effective. The woman in the image just attracted my attention. I found that this visual was created to aim at all the guys since sexuality is in this advertisement. I guess many guys found this attractive, but what the other people would think about it…? “However, some American advertising analysts and critics are still angry and offended by the ad and some at least skeptical of its merit as an advertisement beyond its shock value” (Devon Lantry). This advertising was for Singapore market, but American people who saw this advertisement didn’t feel good about this. It is clear that they are trying to get attentions or interests from men, but it can ruin the image of Burger King and lose customers too.
The visual includes words which make an understandable description of their product seven inches burger. Below this image, there is a heading “IT’LL BLOW YOUR MIND AWAY.” This is all capitalized and give the audiences a strong impression.” The term ‘Blow’ in the heading instantly is what the audience interprets in a sexual and inappropriate way, and because it’s part of the heading, it’s the first thing the audience is going to read.” (Natalie Cupac). The heading in this advertising has a huge impact as much as the image does. Probably, the audiences come up with sex first, based on that, then they can easily imagine how the burger is. The words or sentences could give the viewer supposition of products.
