Dewberries are a type of blackberry that tend to be more trailing and vine-like than shrubby and bushy. In open, sunny habitats, new stems may grow to about four feet tall before they start trailing over other plants and along the ground. In shadier sites, plants are usually about two feet tall. In either situation, the stems may grow 10 to 15 feet in length.

The edible berries can be eaten raw or used in blackberry recipes. They are an important food source for birds, turtles, chipmunks, and other wildlife. Bees are the main pollinators, though butterflies and other beneficial insects will visit in search of nectar and pollen.
