An attractive, compact shrub that will attract hordes of small bees and other pollinators early in the season. It is also a host plant for several species of butterfly whose larvae eat the foliage. Prairie willow is dioecious. The male catkins are silvery with hints of yellow or red from the anthers. The female floret is greenish.
