Location

Trillium Lake is located around 60 miles east of downtown Portland and around 15 miles from the village in Government Camp. It is a populay day trip and camping site for Portlanders and Oregonians alike.

$10/day/vehicle or have a Northwest Forest Pass.

Camping is $26/night single site

Recreational Activities at Trillium Lake

Trillium Lake isn’t just a sight to behold; it also offers a plethora of recreational activities for visitors of all ages:

Fishing

Trillium Lake is a great place to fish. The ODFW stocks the lake with several species of trout starting in May of each year. You can fish from the shore, from a dock, or from your non-motorized boat. You will need a fishing license though which can be purchased at ranger stations, online, through an app, etc. Check out more about the trout here.

Boating

Trillium Lake is incredibly breathtaking and serene. It is highly enjoyable by your preferred non-motorized type of boat. There is a kayak and canoe rental on site that operates during the summer. Stand-up paddle boarding and floating in tubes is also popular. There are 2 boat ramps to back up to and the parking lots are a short walk away.

Swimming

The lake has a nice beach near one of the parking areas and swimming is popular in the summer. The water is surprisingly warm. Swim at your own risk though, life guards are not on site.

Hiking and Biking

You can hike all the way around the lake and there are great opportunities for bike riding along the paved roads, through the campground, and on the dirt trails around the lake. The hike is easy and doesn’t have much elevation change but isn’t accessible for people who may be disabled all the way around. Biking is allowed on trails and the unimproved roads but not in the wilderness areas. See here for more

Camping

Trillium Lake campground offers tent and RV camping with single and double sites. Some sites are first-come, first-served. Each site is equipped with a table and a campfire ring. The campground provides accessible facilities, including vault toilets, drinking water, and a picnic shelter for up to 30 people. There are over 50 sites. You can also book online here. Note: This place is extremely popular and may book up months in advance. You may book up to 6 months in advance.

Photography

Never ending opportunities here. This is one of the most famous shots in Oregon. Go around dusk and catch the alpenglow off Mt. Hood for maximum effect.

Snowshoeing and cross country skiing

The road to Trillium is seasonal. Once the snow starts falling the road will eventually close at the entrance near the main highway, a couple miles up. When this happens, Trillium becomes a popular place for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. The parking lot will fill up with people tubing the snowy hills there and across the street at the snow bunny sno-park.

Expect the summer weekends to be busy. Go earlier for guaranteed parking. There is plenty of parking but this is super popular.
Expect to pay. On weekends it is very common to see payment collection in person set up on the road in. Have cash ready.
Your phone service should work out here. Not as common as you would think for Mt. Hood camp sites

Your dog can come but must be on a leash…for the most part
Bring a jacket no matter what the weather says, and sunscreen.
