Loïs Mailou Jones (1905–1998), an influential artist and educator, studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston for five years and then in 1928 attended the Designers Art School of Boston to study textile design. Some of her first commercial work was the creation of bold and lovely designs that were used in the creation of Cretonnes; heavy cotton cloth printed with colorful designs, used for curtains and upholstery coverings. In this clip from a 1993 interview, Loïs speaks of the influence of Martha’s Vineyard on her artistic career, Cretonnes, and her challenge to be recognized as an artist.
