Description

A parade of police in Western Samoa, possibly taken during the German administration, photographed in the 1890s-1900 by Alfred John Tattersall.

Date of photography attributed to caption and historical context. The Tripartite Convention of 1899 concluded the Second Samoan Civil War, resulting in the formal partition of the Samoan archipelago into a German colony and a United States territory. The islands Upolu and Savaii and the small islands of Apolima and Manono, were declared a protectorate of the German Empire, known as German Samoa, on 1 March 1900.

According to the Samoa Police website information, a Western style police force existed in Samoa from the early 1800s, with a police headquarters building constructed in Apia circa 1890 (see 'Timeline'/History of Samoa Police' https://www.samoapolice.ws/about/history-of-police/timeline accessed 24 July 2023). Reference to a police force as early as 1878 appears in "'An account of Samoan History up to 1918' by Te'o Tuvale (see https://nzetc.victoria.ac.nz/tm/scholarly/tei-TuvAcco-t1-body1-d5.html accessed 24 Juy 2023).
